Question that i was asking today that may be pertinent to something bigger,maybe nothing .

What are the various diffrent subgenres...in this well overall genre.

Wanted to make a list so if anyone can add to any of the bellow that would be useful for me.

the ones i came up with are

Superheroine action-this is the basic of the genre and one i would say a good 40% of the stories are of the site. These are classic comicbook tales of a heroine typically of the ubber flying brick type fighting evil, villians, natural disasters etc. I think ocasionally you get godlike powerful characters-ocasionally not that powerful.There are ways to make intresting play with powers, etc and give it more complicated plots but thats the emphasis. I've written my share of these kind of stories, as have plenty of others.

Superheroine Romance- This maybe the same as above but i am seperating as i do think theres a diffrence. Instead of action the emphasis is on Rommance and love stories with the heroine and her either simple or complicated relationship with someone of the same sex. there maybe action ellements and saving the day as part of it but the idea is the relationship. Like all of the genres here you sometimes get it from the other persons perspective which adds intresting Sometimes its unhappy story where they don't get together(geek seven has done some intresting stories like this). Though it strange to say i would generally classify stories like about family relationships, friendships etc...cause well there often similar.

Non Costumed characters-This isn't the main focus of the board but we ocasionally get stories like this. In terms of what it expects from the genre the stories can be diffrent but they don't have to be.A lot of the stories like this here as oposed to someplace like diana the valkereye isn't the strength level or anything...but most of them feel like the origin story to a costume supehero story. Serena in Serenas Lucky Day never puts on a costume..but well you get the sence thats where its going.

Evil Supergirls-Action-Going to separate this genre up into two bits though i am not sure thats apprioate-but go with me. in these Stories the emphasis is on the Supergirl as the villian who takes over the world is evil, who destroys buildings and cities, or rules it-good bad well what evers. This is not necessairly my particuarl genre, but i can see the appeal-and well its something i have met girls wish for more then once in my day to day life as well

Evil Supergirls-horror- Looking back i think we got this kind of story more offten in the past but Jess Videos certainly qualify-the emphasis is on the supergirl who kills people, who brings death, who can't be stopped by bullets or bombs. Now this may not be that diffrent then the above but i think there is a subtle touch here that make them seem to me at least more pure horror and more akin to like vampires and werewolves then say Deep down in Side. You very ocasionally here, get stories that feature Vampires, or werwolves...more tradiitonal stuff but thats not the emphasis on this site.

Sience Fiction-We don't get that many stories like this- But Raptor and Bright Empire certainly Qualify and theres stories scattered like this. These are the stories set in the future of women with incredible power in space who don't really make them supehreroines traditionally but there much more powerful then the average person This is can be like Space Opera or Space Truckers and i really enjoy the harder science stuff of Happiest in Shadow, but the emphasis is more that one person or sometimes a race is just incredibly better then everyone else....like well the characters in the rest of the stories. .

Comedy This is a broad category-certainly all of the above can be funny-as there are several diffrent types.Crusader of Courage-is pretty much pure Farce. Tales of an 'Mazing Girl, is more observational day to day. You can set it in a realistic world, a very silly one..or well a comicbook one but the emphasis is getting your characters through silly sitautions verbal humor and the like. like the above you can say some Comedy is Action based, Some is Rommance based but you see a fair amount of it on the site and not just from me. I think personally its a fun genre to write as it does aim for a smile.

Childrens Stories- This is a very vauge category very vauge and i hope i don't insult anyone by listing it. These are stories that aim to have the kind of feel and notes of saturday morning cartoons, or books written for children. Argounout does a lot of this with his stories of adventures of 70s cartoon characters-or Dr. Muttenchops with his superwoman series. This is not a slight on these stories-have said before when done well there some of the best in the site going to the feeling of pure potential of the posibility of the world when done well.

if anyone else wants to add more i am really really intrested.

You left out Superheroine Peril, which isn't a part of this site really, but it is a big part of the overall super heroine genre.

Another one that isn't a big part here but elsewhere is Superheroine Erotica. Also Supereroine Slash.

Otherwise you list is very good.

Why so many? Because this is fantasy, and the hallmark of fantasy is its incredible diversity and breadth as compared to any other overarching genre.

SF is often thought of as its own genre, but it can also be a sub-genre of Fantasy, which is more or less how I write it.

We have seen videos with characters with "Girl Fu" like powers.
Maybe Lara Croft fits into this category.
Not superstrong but fantastic fighting skills with an incredible endurance and ability to take punishment.
Or would that fit into the first category?

Fair point. i think i wanted to focus on stuff we see on this site- and while this goes to the general girl power genre its not something we get all that much
we have gotten peices of this level here but its rare, but not unheard off-We have some Batwoman fiction and yeah lara croft stuff.

This goes to a question of power level, which is an intresting question ...i would say loosely
* Godlike powers(Enchanted Erotica Does stuff like this)
* Hyper Magic powers (Viola is a good example of this)
* Standard Kryptonian power level(Supergirl)
* Little Bit Weaker 40s Level Kryptonian level (Tales of Mazing Girl was intentionally like this to make it work)
* Captian America Level
* Badass

These do effect genre quite a bit-but yeah i don't think they create them.

But yeah Erotica and Slash...and for better or for worse Peril kinda fit here(though Peril seems almost a kind of werid subsection of Horror then anything)

Like any other classification I think that some stories are going to utterly defy those categories. Personally I would add the historical (or semi-historical) genre to the mix.

I think that classfying based on pure power level would be useless since power levels tend to spam across all the above genres, although some tend more toward a end of the spectrum.

I think having that as a classification would help, but probably not be sufficient, yeah. Still some people prefer to lean toward one side of the power spectrum or the other, and it could help narrow the search for people. Both genre and power seems like the best way to handle it.

I was going to add Erotica, but Shadar already mentioned it, which got me thinking...

Strikes me that sub-genres are fractal - they multiply when you examine them. Erotica divides into Peril, Femdom, Slash, and more... Then, even further, it divides into heroic or evil, comic-book or gritty, modern day or science fiction, high-powered or low-powered. Phew.

I guess they're more like the tags we use in the library - you can arrange them in infinite combinations depending on your preference.

Action / Romance / Comic-Book / High-Powered
Erotica / Femdom / Science-Fiction / Low-Powered / Cyborg
Comedy / Erotica / Modern-Day / Godlike

Now I feel like I have to make lists and generate some random sub-genres. Excuse me...

I've written all kinds of stuff, in many sub-genres, but if anyone asks me what I write, I always say I write science fiction about genetically-enhanced humans. Whatever genre that is.

Other people have come up with all kinds of other classifications for some of my stuff, but it's a fools errand.

The things we can probably agree on that are the foundation of every successful story (in the SWM portion of the genre):

1) Involves a woman as a principal character (although not always the main character)

2) She's got some kind of ability(s) beyond that of normal humans.

3) Sexual explicitness is generally in the center of the genre.

4) Generally has a comic-bookish kind of vibe, although many (most?) characters are original.

The tag system required some level of rethinking, this thread might be going in the right direction.

Pretty much the way I see it.

More than ten years ago, Tarot Barnes touched on the sexual fetish aspect:

www.brightempire.com/boobs&bullets.html

But the kind of superheroine fiction that was based ONLY on the fetish of invulnerability to bullets and other weapons -- or even things like jackhammers – has practically vanished. The last activity at the Xtreme Strength site was more than five years ago, and I don't think there are any others like it. We want STORIES, not just fetish scenes. I tried that kind of thing once back in 2006 with "As you Like It," and it was a flop.
