What do you think?

What do you think? was created by YAGS
Since CF has been gone for so long, and probably isn't coming back, I had an idea I thought I'd run by the rest of you.

When reading one of his stories years ago, I had an idea for kind of a "spin off" story related to it, which I might like to write. I wouldn't try to copy his style or anything - not completely, anyway. It would fit into the current workshop theme of "new beginnings", since I'd be introducing a new character, though the conceptual framework would come from his previous story.

Do the rest of you think it would be ok to do a sequel/spinoff to one of his stories that way? Or since he's not around to approve it, do you think his stuff should be completely off limits to the rest of us for this sort of thing?

I think you should do it. What's the worst that could happen? Blogger comes back and gets you?

Sounds like a win-win to me!

In all seriousness, I think you should just give him a little nod in the preface, and then write your story. It's sad that he no longer posts here, but his memory and contributions can continue to inspire us.

Thanks, Goobers. I just don't want to piss off his old fans or anything like that. Or him, if he returns and thinks I'm "copying" him. Anyone else have an opinion on this? I noticed the thread's been viewed 62 times in the last 24 hours, and only the one reply so far.

I don't know, on one hand I'll be very interested to see a continuation to some of CF's stories but, on the other hand, I don't know how far one can push himself into another person stories, especially without any explicit permission.

Anyway I agree with Goobers a clearly stated intro is required to dispell any doubt.

If Vanilla Ice can sample Under Pressure and claim it's a new song, then you can write some CF-styled uberpr0n and I doubt you're going to have to worry about anyone's copyright lawyers coming after you. I say bring the remix.

I do not think he would mind. Looking forward to your efforts. Hope your star can fly is all I ask. Seemed that about half his females could not.

I agree. I referenced one of CF's stories in my short "Birthday Wish," and later I posted an homage to "Randolph and Kim" in the style of a Road Runner cartoon. I ran both stories by CF beforehand, and he gave me an enthusiastic thumbs-up both times. CF was all about encouraging the genre.

But as goobers said, a brief acknowledgement that you're drawing upon "Empress Ria" (or whatever story has inspired you) would be appropriate.

Hey, suppose the next workshop theme was to continue one of CF's stories. Think that might bring him out of the woodwork?

Now I'm depressed. :( CF, wherever you are -- come back! We miss you!

I think it would be great to have a story from CF re-started/continued. It would be a testimonial to his great work.

Speaking of ConceptFan, does anyone have any of the stories that were on his site? There are a few on thevalkyrie, but a lot are missing.

Ok, so everyone seems ok with me doing this. We've got almost 2 months for the workshop deadline. I have a basic story idea, at least enough for the first few chapters. Guess I should get to work actually writing.

And sorry Sarge, but the story I'm basing this on has non-flying uber-girls, which means my new character won't fly, either. If I'm going to play in CF's sandbox, I'm going to stick to his rules.

I think its an excellent idea as long as you give CF some credit in the intro.

When the writer has vanished --for months-- and is likely never coming back, it probably doesn't matter a BIT to him as to whether you use one of his stories as a springboard for something new. After all, he's GONE. He's left the genre behind, for whatever reasons. And if he comes back and sees, well any writer would be grateful to have their work remembered so fondly that other writers build upon it.

i can confirm that this site is safe. the only things you may have to shuffle through some of the crawls that the wayback machine did. sometimes youll find that part of the story is not accessable unless you due. i saved all the stories myself but i feel that unless i am given a big A OKAY, i will not post them. this being due to respect for the author.
