What do you think?
When reading one of his stories years ago, I had an idea for kind of a "spin off" story related to it, which I might like to write. I wouldn't try to copy his style or anything - not completely, anyway. It would fit into the current workshop theme of "new beginnings", since I'd be introducing a new character, though the conceptual framework would come from his previous story.
Do the rest of you think it would be ok to do a sequel/spinoff to one of his stories that way? Or since he's not around to approve it, do you think his stuff should be completely off limits to the rest of us for this sort of thing?

Sounds like a win-win to me!
In all seriousness, I think you should just give him a little nod in the preface, and then write your story. It's sad that he no longer posts here, but his memory and contributions can continue to inspire us.

Anyway I agree with Goobers a clearly stated intro is required to dispell any doubt.

I agree. I referenced one of CF's stories in my short "Birthday Wish," and later I posted an homage to "Randolph and Kim" in the style of a Road Runner cartoon. I ran both stories by CF beforehand, and he gave me an enthusiastic thumbs-up both times. CF was all about encouraging the genre.
But as goobers said, a brief acknowledgement that you're drawing upon "Empress Ria" (or whatever story has inspired you) would be appropriate.
Hey, suppose the next workshop theme was to continue one of CF's stories. Think that might bring him out of the woodwork?
Now I'm depressed.

And sorry Sarge, but the story I'm basing this on has non-flying uber-girls, which means my new character won't fly, either. If I'm going to play in CF's sandbox, I'm going to stick to his rules.
