FemForce: Superbabes was created by Markiehoe

I have been a fan of AC Comics FemForce since I found the book on the rack back in 1987
Full disclosure: My Alter Ego does freelance writing for FemForce

Superbabes Number 0 is a one shot color comic specifically designed to hype interest and be a rare collectible.
I am Super Excited to see the FemForce in color and to hopefully see some of my work make the cut and make it into the new ongoing title early next year.

This isn't about AC Comics, DC/Marvel do this as well, and this is done much better than it typically is.

But I can't express how much I HATE, the following:

As an ongoing quarterly color series, SUPERBABES won’t be debuting until sometime in the first half of 2019 (with an actual #1 issue); but qualifying retailers can get one copy of #0 FREE with every THREE copies of FF #184 that they purchase. SUPERBABES will be a FULL COLOR, high-quality standard-sized comic book on glossy stock, and this special #0 edition will be the same. (Regular issues of SUPERBABES will run 32 pages in length, while this special #0 will be 24 pages.)

That is the entire "must order X number of another comic to get 1 of this one".  At least in this case (unlike most of the time with Marvel) the issue is Free (after ordering 3 comics).

I know why it's done, etc etc, and a store getting a "free" comic is great as they can turn around and sell it and make money.

It's only marginally less bad when it's just a variant cover of the comic.  I hate the entire idea of artificial scarcity as a business model --- the horrible thing is that it must work because everyone does it.

But, sell me a comic/thing and that ups the chance I'll buy it.   Do funny gimicks that make it difficult to get your comic?  I can't find it and therefore I won't get it.  Femme Force is already hard enough to find.

Checked, the last issue I bought was #175 which I ordered from the WebSite .. and the website messed up and they had to email me as it didn't save my address, and it didn't charge me shipping.  It was all quickly worked out though, and they ate the shipping costs.

(IIRC, I bought #175 it as it was mentioned here.)

I HAVE seen Femme Force at my comic book store, but it seems sporadic.   And with how my memory works ... it could have been four years ago.  I'm leaving myself a note to check for it on the shelf when I'm next in.

Hmm.. I'm going to have to go back over Previews as I don't remember seeing Femme Force (but I wasn't looking for it).  I keep forgetting it's around.  I used to keep my pull fairly lean, but I've always bought a lot of independents, it's just I never put them on my pull.  In the last year, I've made special effort to put independents on my pull (even getting Previews for the First time ever) ... because those comics need support and it's how you encourage them to stay around.

Hm.  I'll try to remember to pre-order #184.  My store will generally order at least one other copy for the shelf for any comic someone orders.  The manager figures that if someone shows direct interest in a title, that means it's likely at least ONE other customer in the store would like it, but doesn't pre-order or might not know it exists.

AC Comics has been around since the early 1980s and is dtill going while other Indies have come, made a bang and then folded.
They seem to have a business model that works.

I too do not care for gimmics however for the most part the fans seem to or publishers would not do it.
Those lenticular covers the Big 2 put out sold quite well last year.

Once again Full Disclosure.
I am a freelance writer for AC and a fan.
My comics shop runs things pretty close to the vest in order to stay open.
My pull list is very small and it is only indies.
He will only stock books he knows he can sell.
I and a few others preorder FemForce.
The book is in previews and is published quarterly.
(Superbabes will also be published quarterly in color but with a smaller page count.)
My shop sells them at a discount and there is no shipping.
It is a win all around for me.

Thank you for purchasing issue 175.
My story featuring RAD, "Fools Rushin" was a lot of fun to write as I was asked to change it from a Ms Victory story to a Yankee Girl story.
I asked if I could change the tone and use Rad instead and was given the go ahead.
I think the story came out pretty good.

I get very little feedback when I promote FemForce on this forum.

www.previewsworld.com/Catalog/MAY181244

This issue promises to feature THREE Ms. Victory stories.
I think all fans of this forum would enjoy this upcoming issue.
There is still time to preorder a copy.

Gimmicks I can ignore don't bother me as much.  So Lenticular covers (as long as there is a normal one) don't really bother me. Same with most variants, which I used to find annoying.  Now I view as "more work for artist, and more art in the world".

I try to collect all the Elizabeth Torque covers I can find, and a few have been "1 in 25" (etc) variants and suddently they're $10+ comics.  GRRR.   I've commisssioned Elizabeth Torque and done a lot of email back/forth with her, though it's been several years now.  And that was when she'd only done a few covers for Mercy Sparx.  Now she's doing LOTS of Marvel covers.  I still like to support her work by picking it all up.  (If I ever see her in person, I have a GIANT pile of comics now.)

But if I want something, and it's being made artifically scarce, I can't *get* it easily.  And that's annoying.

My comic book colection is a graveyard of publishers and titles that have all gone away.  Even the big two only have a few titles that have been published as long as Femme Force.  And even those have stopped/started over the years.

I've only been getting previews for a few months, so if it's quarterly, I've probably missed it once.  But the entire reason I broke down and started to use Previews is so I find titles and just put them on my pull.  I spend waaaaaay too much money on comic books every week.  so I went from "pull list very small", and me regularlly picking up 2-3x of other titles on the shelf, to now I get a huge stack and I am only missing a few things.

I really need to ween myself off Marvel/DC.  But comics (and bad food) are really my only vice so, meh.  I just buy a lot of comics.

Hm.  It seems like our cup of tea.

I do tend to post in waves, but I think I"d generally at least say *something*.  It's good to remind people of things. Femme Force has always had a variable quality.  It's not as bad as Supergirl, but some issues aren't as good as others.  So it's one of those things that I don't think I meant to drop it, but I just stopped actively looking for it.   ONe of hte segments I've not fixed up in my comic collection is Femme Force. I know I have a lot of them, jsut how many?  I have no clue.  But it's a big stack. ;-)

With it coming out quarterly, if I don't put it on my pull it's easy to miss it.  One other reason I put things on my pull is that as I got my comic colleciton in order I'd find titles I was hand-buying I'd regularly miss an issue as for some reason I didn't buy it.  And "didn't see it on the shelf" is a major reason.  I go back to the comic book store for some reason and always find a title I missed.  *sigh* so now i just have a shit-load on my pull.

Thanks! It could be I didn't miss this, it might be _right_ before I started.getting Previews, and it'd have eventually worked itself out.  That's the entire reason for putting a title on my pull list so I don't have to remember to find it. I just have to remember to put it on the list once.  Femme Force is a title that deserves a few issues of seeing what it's like now.

The real reason I started to up my pull, is becoming more aware of how easy it is for a comic to fail. For books and comics the pre-orders lead stores to order other copies.  Without the pre-orders, they don't order those other copies, other people don't see/get the book, and it'll fail even if people wold have liked it.   A comic can fail before #2 hits the stands because #4 and 5 aren't selling well enough.

And man, some awesome titles sell in crimminally low volumes.

OTH Marvel just rebooted all their comics and DC shot out a shit-load of shit, and there were a bunch of other indy comics added to my pull.  Quite easily I just over looked Femme Force.

And yes, Ms. Victory is a nice draw. ;-)

Looks good.  I have followed FemForce and have bought all their issues since #1 till about #110+ when they decided to do on-demand publishing.  To be honest, the art suffered a dropoff a bit and was inconsistent when they went to the $10 format so I haven't worked that hard to purchase them all, though I have with some.  I miss the art of Gorby and Heike that littered the old issues.

While their business model has kept them around and kudos to them, I find it almost infuriating that they are one of the only publishers I know that do not offer digital copies.  Well, they do of some of the really old stuff, but nothing since they went to on-demand.

Space requirements have forced me to stop purchasing actual books.  While I do prefer them -- and I have a collection of nearly 10,000 in several long boxes -- I need to be more practical going forward and mostly buy digital comics.  While I understand that comixology is a pain to work with (so I hear), there are several outlet options -- indyplanet, digitalcomics, etc.

I find it unbelievable that AC doesn't do this.  They are leaving a lot of money on the table with me I know....

OK, rant (feedback) over..... :)

Oh man I feel your pain.  I'm only a 1/3 way done and i've inventoried > 10K comics already.  They take up a large part of my house (1/2 duplex).   Even those take up a LOT of room.  I switched to short boxes as the shelves are smaller and the boxes are lighter and easier to move around.  Some I'm never going to bother.

I gave up on text-only books.  I love them, but if a book doesn't have pictures, I'm buying it digitally.  My kindle is good enough to read off of and stores 100's of books.  (I'm on target to read 80 books this year.)

And there are more than a few comics I only get digitally.  I really should give up on the paper copies -- but I'm an addict.  And I love that marvel does a 'free' digital copy for every comic sold.  (DC does it for a few titles.)  I wish all the independents did that.  I end up double buying a few things, as it's easier to re-read digital copies.. and the ones I don't do that a few I buy the GN.

How do you know you're an addict?  When you have a physical copy, a reading copy, a digital copy, and a Graphic Novel of the same issues.

Wow, Fem Force is still going? Usually great stuff, I just wasn't that enthusiastic all the time that it was in black and white. But of course there are many famous b&w comics like Love and Rockets for example.

Awesome! Love the fact that AC Comics is still publishing, as well as similar indies like Heroic (Flare, etc.) and Broadsword (Tarot Black Rose).
Haven't seen an issue of Fem Force in a few years in my LCS, but I've more recently bought some of the Cult Retro videos like Nightveil and Stormy Tempest, and even corresponded directly with Bill Black (I assume it was him) about the long-promised sequel to Scarlet Scorpion (hasn't happened yet, alas).

So you work directly with Bill, Markiehoe? If so, very cool.
Can I get my LCS to special-order Superbabes and the newest Fem Force issues..are they available through Diamond?

FemForce is still going.
Most comic shops I know of only take preorders of  FemForce as it is an Indy title and they fear inventory they believe they can not sell.

Yes I have worked with Bill Black on comics and with his movies.
Bill inked my Black Phantom story "Till Death do us Part" featured in FemForce 176.
Check out the credits on the opening page.

You could have knocked me over with a feather when I heard that was happening.

I have also worked on some of his films.
I have an acting role in The Amazing Colossal woman.
I shot my own footage and he inserted it into the movie.
I acted and did camera work on Nyoka and the Lost Amulet of Vultura
I acted and did camera work and some assistant directing on Shadow Slayer.
I played the Monster in that one.

Bill Black is semi retired now.
He works when he wants to.
Progress is happening on Scarlett Scorpion.
I have an acting part in that one.
My footage has been shot and is in the can.

Yes you can find FemForce in Previews.
I believe there is still time to order FemForce 183
www.previewsworld.com/Catalog/MAY181244

Your shop will have to order three issues of FemForce 184 in order to receive one issue of SuperBabes #0 for free.

If anyone is interested my comics story:"Till Death do us Part" is the comic book adaption of my short film "A Coffin for the Black Phantom"
I changed the story a bit in the comics adaption in order to fit the continuity of the character as seen in the comics.
Hence the title change.
This is an independent movie produced, written and shot by me and endorsed by Bill Black
You can watch it here:
