Wow... very impressive! This is the kind of super-realistic CGI I like.

A new story - Chip off the Old Block

Some people say a picture is worth a thousand words. Here’s my thou- sand.

Thanks to Earliechec for finding this outstanding CG image and posting the link to the artwork of Jungwon Park in South Korea. I like the way he visualizes SG, and hopefully you’ll like my little fantasy about her as well.

I’ve used a couple of modest images from my own photoenhance work, but this is really a story built around Park’s single amazing image.

I’ll post this on the AU site for immediate access, but also submit it to SuperWomenMania StoryBank for inclusion on the next update.

Thanks for the feedback, JonX. Funny how a compelling picture can stimulate an interesting story. It was an impulse thing, but was fun to reinvent the Supergirl mythos by combining some current television drama (as in V) and a few other bits and pieces of my own fantasies. All bound by finding a way to use that outstanding image.

I suppose I should mention to others that while the picts are PG-13, some of the writing is R-rated.

I've got part 2 underway... not sure how far I'll go with this story line, but I'm really enthused about how the characters developed in part one. Characters are always the key to keeping me interested. And as you know, once they take life, they set their own agendas.

At the moment, Daryl and Lynda are tucked into a private first-class cabin on the TGV, heading toward Geneva. As you'd expect, Daryl is full of wonder and has a lot of questions (imagine yourself in his place!) and for the first time in her life, Lynda can actually talk about herself. In so doing, she's experiencing a moment of catharsis.

Sinister threats and even more powerful cyborgs and the visitors themselves are waiting in Geneva, but for the moment, they are sharing their own little bubble of space and time.

If you hit up his blog you'll see he had a 3D printer do a mock up for him - very cool what you can do with CAD and rapid proto-typing.

Those 3D protos are great... I presume the prototyping machine creates those images using a plastic like material. Wonder how big they are?

That process doesn't handle hair very well, but the rest was truly exceptional. I guess one would have to paint the resulting statues.

Hope he does more images of a similar type. Guess i should email him and ask.

There are a few different types. Some companies use thin sheets that are cut, stacked, and glued. Others use powder - which is put down in layers - sprayed with a bonding agent and color in specific places - then when finished the loose/unglued powder is recycled. Others look like an ink jet printer – but the “paper” can move up and down as a resin is excreted and stacked.

Hair – stranding is not easy. I’m still impressed they have the builds working multi direction and unattached – like the tie, eyelashes, and glasses. The “old” machines I got to play with were VERY limited compared to this.

Most of these machines are the size of a normal office printer or a full height cabinet.

Shadar: Love your story. Great mix of thriller/espionage/sci-fi/sensuality/and super heroine action. It read just like a well above average action movie flows. I also like the spin on her as a “chip off” – might be a good way for Hollywood to make the character work – and set her free from some of the past character issues and limitations. Nice work - thanks for sharing - I hope to see more soon.

Thanks, Random. We're all struggling with how to launch a Supergirl character without carrying any of the baggage that usually comes with the character. You do a great job in exploring that space, and I've been tinkering with it for a long time, so hopefully this attempt will hang together.

Part 2 will throw a few surprises in that area, but hopefully they also work for you.

As far as those 3D printers, thanks for the background on how they work. I did some Googling around on the specific technology he's using, only to find that the better machines cost over $70,000, with the entry-level ones about $40,000. I assume he's using a machine at work.

The results are spectacular though, I agree, especially the mostly detached glasses. I hope he paints some of his sculptures (or whatever they call these 3D printings). Also, from what I could read, the better machines can make models about a foot tall.

Anyway, part 2 of my story is coming along nicely. I'm hoping to make it a Christmas gift. Been a while since I've been on a roll like this.

He actually posted a request for info on "rapid prototyping" before he got this one done – so I don’t think it’s at his office – I think he’s really just that enthusiastic about it. There are *lots* of companies that you can send the file 3D file to and they will produce a model for you. The prices are not terrible – when compared to some of the DC direct stuff – and the fact that you get a single object production run which is the true beauty of the technology.

If he used one of the color machines – and got good results – I’d pay for one.

I've seen a 3D printer that prints now in color. Very cool stuff.

Thanks for the great story Shadar.

I've published Part 2 of the Chip off the Old Block alternate Supergirl story, along with a repository of high-res images (lower res images used in PDF files).

This is turning into an Resistance fighters versus Anna (of V) versus Amazon story, with the common thread being some very different Kryptonians in the middle. Too bad the returning V series won't have a few of these elements.

Part 1 has been slightly revised:

www.velorian.net/chip_off_block_part1.pdf

Part 2 is all new:

www.velorian.net/chip_off_block_part2.pdf

Part 3 is underway.

The directory link for the high-res images is in the PDF files.

Enjoy,

Shadar
