Most overrated films of all time

OK, here's where it'll get fun......three of my picks here:

1) Almost anything with Dustin Hoffman. OK, Tootsie was cute and I loved Marathon Man (with all due respect to my dentist, Dr Munson), but is this guy one of the most overrated actors alive? Outbreak, Meet the Fockers, Rainman, Ishtar.....Rainman was a cinematic slice of history though with the two biggest "over actors" of the 20th century

2) Lord of the Rings. OK, lemme explain......I never read the book and I have this on DVD (one of those blockbuster offereings). I have tried to watch this thing about 5 times and cannot get more than an hour into it (cumulative). I know I just should prob give it a chance and it didn't totally suck, but didn't hold my attention at all.

3) Usual Suspects. OK, I liked this movie actually. LOVE Kevin Spacey and Gabriel Byrne (Millers Crossing is awesome), but a clever ending? Basically, the entire movie was a lie! Pretty easy to have an unsuspecting ending (well, you knew ONE of them had to be Keyser Souza) when the entire plot of the movie didn't happen. I think I'm the only one who thinks this, so bring on the flames.....

Am sure Dumb & Dumber is on someone's list.... :P

1) Regarding Dustin Hoffman: Certainly he's made his share of duds, but he's hardly the "over-actor" you make him out to be ... Now if you'd said "Robin Williams," I'd concur!

2) Regarding "Lord of the Rings": Haven't seen it ...

3) Regarding "The Usual Suspects": I agree. The idea would have been OK in a novel -- "Kint's" testimony could have been put in quotation marks or italics and the reader would have had no warrant for assuming that it was the truth. But asking the viewer of the movie to accept that everything he's been watching for the previous 90 minutes is a fabrication ... that's just screwy.

Here are two nominations of my own:

1) The English Patient: Elaine was right!

2) Casablanca: I may take some heat for this, but I always found this movie simplistic and sentimental.

Matrix....I only saw the first one and while it didn't suck, dunno what the big deal was either. It influenced me sooooooo much, I've yet to see the sequels (which are on about every second of the day on the cable channels).....Keanu? Woah!

Titanic I thought was pretty good actually.....great ending! Totally took me by surprise! I mean who woulda thought that big ship could go down? :P

2) Casablanca: I may take some heat for this, but I always found this movie simplistic and sentimental.

You should take heat for this! :D

Sentimental, I'll grant you. Simplistic? Nope. I've never seen a movie that so perfectly balanced the characters and situations in such a way as to make any ending perfectly viable until the final scene. I wasn't sure what Rick would do; wasn't sure what Ilsa would do; wasn't sure what Laszlo would do; wasn't sure what Louis would do. Watching the movie always reminds me of the feeling of seeing an ex-girlfriend again for the first time in a long time. You think you've moved on; you think that you're a different person. But when you see them, you realize that you haven't changed at all, and it rattles you more than you care to admit.

While I would agree that Rick and Ilsa are relatively accessible characters, I don't feel that makes them simplistic at all. They're conflicted people, dealing with conflicting feelings in a trying time. That's the beauty of it. You can completely relate to the characters and the experience, yet you're not sure what you would choose to do given the same situation.

And do you really feel that Louis' motivations are transparent? Every time I watch the movie, I think of some other possible reasons for his decisions.

I would encourage you give it another viewing.

In looking for overrated movies, I'd look to Gosford Park. I couldn't relate to any of the characters, wasn't interested in the story, and didn't find it particularly funny. It won a screenplay Oscar and managed a best picture nomination and a best director nomination for Altman. I suppose that it's humor was too obvious and crude for me; I'll stick with the more subtle, tasteful wit of pictures like Dumb and Dumber any day.

You don't like the English Patient? OK, Argo..... you're fired!! (in best John O'Hurley voice)

As for Casablanca, I agree with Rasa on this. Loved it and its pretty worthy of most of the praise it gets. So many great lines that are now part of pop culture (like Seinfeld)....

While Robin Williams is a bit over the top when he's on Leno or Oprah, I think he's a pretty good actor -- much better than Hoffman. I liked him in Good Will and Dead Poet and Mrs Doubtfire (though admittingly Hoffman played the better "guy playing a woman" role in Tootsie). Interestingly, now thinking about it, Toys shoulda been one of my worst of alltime. Awful flick.....

Here's my most overrated films.

1. Star Wars:I don't know about you but I just don't get this whole space saga. They go forwards when they first released it and now they released 3 prequels. Come on, it would've been better if we got the full story in the '70s-'80s and then Luke shows up in the '90s-'00s. I mean, what was Mr. Lucas smoking to decide to release it this way?

2. Titanic:Come on, this movie gives you the obvious facts but in a glossy big-screen fashion.

3. JFK:Read Titanic. We all know what happened to the guy. He gets assassinated by some wacko wielding a gun in a Dallas public library window. And another guy just might've taken heat for it.
