That ending....wow....I'm at a loss.
You'd think that superspeed would make me more punctual, huh?

DDI was my first attempt at fiction. In fact, when I started, I was so lacking in experience that I had expected the plot you just read to fit into 7-8 chapters, not 45. Lesson learned.
In fact, I learned a number of lessons over the course of writing this thing, and not just about chapter length. I learned that Steven King is right when he says that writing is like lifting weights: the more you do it, the stronger you get. So, for those of you who are wondering whether you can do this, my two cents is, yes, you can. But you need to be prepared to work at it. I certainly plan to.
I also learned that, for me, writing for an internet forum is emotionally challenging. You throw yourself into a project and hope that somebody, anybody likes it. What accolades you receive are incredibly gratifying. But there are not enough accolades in the world to keep you going: it's just too thankless a task. Ultimately, the fire has to come from within. It has too come from dee-- oh, never mind.
As this comes to a close, I want to broadcast several thank-you’s.
First, to those of you that took a moment to offer up positive commentary over the last two years -- I’m not going to name names; you know who you are-- you made a huge difference.
Secondly, to Lfan, thank you for the beta reads and for making the site a welcoming place. Although the story was fairly faithful to the genre, it also had some eccentricities, such as a slow start (no flying until Part 17!), an ensemble cast, and highly sexual content. If I had begun to sense that the story was not welcome, I would have abandoned it a long time ago. Through lots of one-on-one communication, Lfan nudged me forward.
Finally, to Shadar for founding the genre. The fact that the DDI girls stored overwhelming power in their breasts was clearly inspired by Shadar’s own concepts. But more importantly, Shadar had the guts to start writing this type of fiction before anybody else was doing it. Seeing his stories online was the first step toward me writing my own. Although he and I have never been in direct contact, DDI probably wouldn't have come into existence without him.
I hope to write more in the future. But for the time being I'm going to catch up on some reading. Lots of good material to catch up on...

It almost made me feel guilty for fapping over their earlier cruel careless acts...
But I still think that something went missing, one last note, maybe a last thread of hope that the girls weren't completely 'finished'. Like the last scene of Spock's coffin on Genesis planet, or like the last scene of the Iron Giant with his remains on the moon, so that the last note isn't as sad.
Nevertheless, I'll remember your story and will revisit it for a long time, most probably forever

Thanks for the comments. I think the ending may be a matter of personal taste. However, for what it's worth, I hadn't intended for the ending to be completely sad. I had hoped to establish their

Thanks for the comments. I think the ending may be a matter of personal taste. However, for what it's worth, I hadn't intended for the ending to be completely sad. I had hoped to establish theirWarning: Spoiler!sacrifice as a gift to the ones they care about, a final vindication of their character.
Sacrifice of a main character is rarely seen as a gift from reader, simply because we grow used to them and their POV over the story. When they finally kick the bucket for better or worst, we keep hoping that they will return one way or another (e.g. Sherlock Holmes). Killing a character in a good, meaningful and definitve way is one of the hardest part of writing a story.

To be more specific, it is not because they died, it is sad because the only moment they had full control over their lives was in their blaze of glory, the last moments of their lives.

Yes, that's true. It reminds me of the feeling of frustration I had when I read Le Morte d'Arthur (the Knights of the Round Table). The moment they had selected and seated the last knight, moment the had completed the circle and brought order to the kingdom-- that was the moment everything began to fall apart.
The ending was a hard pill to swallow, but it was true to my intentions and an important part the story I wanted to tell. Thank you for reading it!

I felt bad seeing that Not the One sorta knocked DDI off the frontpage so fast, so thought I better get it back there somehow.

Let's call it kharma. DDI had pushed quite a few stories out of the front page before

You don't have to feel bad, Dru. The series had its time. But thank you for the plug!

To the extent I shoved someone's story off the ticker, it wasn't intentional.
