Not familiar with the original series, which came out before I was born. But it should be interesting to see what they do with the premise. "Biopunk" is a fairly recent coinage, and a variation on cyberpunk and steampunk. The Wikipedia entry doesn't mention it, but sf critics first applied the term to the works of Paolo Bacigalupi like THE WINDUP GIRL:
