Story Submission Experiment

Story Submission Experiment was created by fats
Hi all,

We are going to run a little experiment on the site over the next three months, normally when we get a story, it's reviewed then formatted and finally published by woodclaw normally as soon as it's submitted, but or the next three months we are going to change the system and see how that works.

What's changing, when a story is submitted it will still be reviewed, formatted by woodclaw but instead of publishing as soon as it's ready we are going to hold off publishing until the following Sunday.

For the period of the trail members who have auto publishing rights will lose them.

if it looks like it's not working before the end of the three-month trial then I'll end it early.

if you have any questions about it please post them here.

Any particular reason for this change?
I don't immediately see the benefit other than possible schedule improvement for Woodclaw .

There are a few reasons behind the change, the main one is when we have stories being published in drip and drabs people don't notice them unless they are advertised by the author, and I feel that it's important for new stories to get the most publicity as possible.

Same question...

It also means stories will be published in clumps as opposed to being spread out. I think a story will get more reads and comments when readers aren't trying to read and comment on five at a time, picking and choosing before they even start.

That might work to the advantage of authors with an established following but could work against those who are less prolific. Readers only have so much time. Every story that is published alone will get some looks.

Anyway, my thoughts. There might be great reasons for doing it that I'm unaware of, but I'm only seeing downsides from my perspective.

I didn't read this post, Fats, before I posted my concern. I had thought of it the opposite way, but maybe you see it more clearly.

I personally think everyone should post to promote their stories. It's a chance to tell readers what to expect and sell your story. If you can write a story, you can also write a paragraph that pitches it as best you can.

In fact, the authoring gurus all say to write that synopsis before you write anything else. Good for the storytelling brain. You can still leave the reader hanging and wanting to know more so they will read the story. In fact, that's the goal.

I guess that my take would be that those who do the work (and do it for free or on their own nickel) should have a say in how it is done, especially if they think it will make their job easier. There are pros and cons. It may reduce the number of hits to the site, but I doubt it would be significant. It will not be set in stone, so I would not object to giving it a try.

Sounds like a good change. While I tried to post on the forums when a new chapter was published for my work, it can be easy to miss when a new story appears on the site without any notice on the forums.

So if I get it right, the next non-workshop update story will be on 15th April. Am I correct ?

That's my understanding. I've submitted two additional episodes for StarTrooper, both of them longer than any of the earlier ones. These two episodes finish Book 1.

Book 2 will pick up in the Asteroid Belt and near the moons of Jupiter. Hunting for the Queens -- and trying to stay alive. But given the lessons they learn at the Battle of Mars (in the two episodes I just submitted), they might very well be on a one-way trip to destruction.

But never count a Navy SEAL and the ten UberWomen crewing his spaceship out of a fight.
