hi all,

i thought it would be a good idea to create a Reddit to support the site, I'll be using that instead of Facebook (I'm going to close that group down soon) to post any server outage updates and anything else that's needed.

Why shut down the FB page?
I personally don't go to or use Reddit.

You can view a reddit (but not comment) w/o needing an account or having a password. You can view part of Facebook w/o an account, but it keeps trying to get you to create one, and you can't really look too deeply at anything before it cuts you off. Facebook is an absolutely terrible place to post needed messages (outages/etc) as it'll require users to go get a Facebook account to see them.

With reddit, just bookmark the reddit group.  If you try to log in here and it doesn't work, just go to that saved book mark and read what's going on.  Make a throwaway account if you need/want to comment.

I'm not saying that reddit won't try to track you -- but even if you don't log into Facebook, Facebook is trying to figure out who you are and how to sell you. It'll mine anything you post and collect info on you, so they can sell you better. You can't opt out. This bothers some more than others, and perhaps a site that caters to things outside the norm, shouldn't overtly tie itself to a site that loves to track you and collect data on you. I mean personally, yeah, I like powerful women so I love to hang around here and (now) I really just don't care who knows that. 20 years ago.. it still seemed like it was weird and people would judge me for it. That bothered me. Now, I pretty much DGAF. I'm just saying that some here might not want their predilections tracked. With Facebook, there really isn't anything anyone here can do about that. With Reddit, you can fully read anything you want anonymously, and easily use incognito modes to keep your privacy if you need/want. And it's quite common for reddit users to have multiple accounts to keep things separate and the culture there has always been against doxing. You aren't supposed to try to find out who someone REALLY is.  Sure one day reddit might evolve into something as nasty as Facebook.. but it hasn't yet.

Just saying you CAN manage your privacy and accounts with reddit, it's blatantly impossible with Facebook. I'm absolutely certain if you have multiple facebook accounts it doesn't matter either, Facebook will figure that out, and add that information to your record.  The best that I do is only go to Facebook using Firefox and it's automatic modes to isolate it... but even then I mess up and use my iPad or click on an Instagram link.. and then it's all over.  It's the internet version of glitter.

Personally, I use Facebook, but I limit use to talking to people I actually know in the real world. I joined a group to support my comic inventory program, and that was pretty much a mistake (too many posts). It'd be much better served w/ a reddit group where I could more easily ignore it.  It's also much easier for a new or prospective user of the software to search past posts...some of which are quite helpful to figure out the features and interesting ways to use the software.  That part is not relevant to SWM though.

Anyway, even now, when I don't care who knows what I like, I'd absolutely never ever even visit the SWM Facebook page, let alone join.

Same goes for me, Twice. I deleted my Facebook account a couple of years ago. Didn't want to contribute further to the insanity.

Also agree that Reddit is generally open for read-only and a far better choice, especially given its just a backup  for when SWM is down for some reason.

I much prefer an independent member-owned and controlled standalone site like SWM. I truly appreciate the work that Fats and Woodclaw and others put into keeping it independent and suitable for our needs.

If you forget you password on Facebook, they'll want your driver license to let you back in. Heck no.

after some lobbying from people, I've decided to keep the Facebook group, but I must make people aware that the communication chain that will govern how updates are released will be as followed.

Discord - Reddit - Facebook, Twitter will not be updated as it's not something that I've updated in the last few years.
