Yes you heard that right there is going to be a new Star Trek series and it's going to be a VOD show rather than a TV show.

More about it here

I'm happy to see both a new interpretation of the Star Trek universe in a serial, and also that it's on VOD. That's where everything should be shown. The broadcast model is so 20th century.

Hopefully they capture some of the charm of the original series, with lots of strange new worlds and alien civilizations.

Its intresting to bring up the streaming system it somewhat to topic:

From what i have heard from Speculation Supergirl was kind of the test of this service. That CBS invested a lot of money in the show in part with the idea that while traditional ratings weren't necessairly justify it if gets a lot of intrest they could put it on there streaming service and make money there. Star Trek is the same thing, with the same kind of philosphy. Take a show thats geek friendly and put it online beyond a paywall and see where it goes.

As for This-ahh will see. A lot of what i have heard has talked about "continuity" which is something that i feel is a loosing game in Star Trek. Its a show about a ship that flies to alien planets that you have never been before and has adventures-shows like Enterprise which was all continuity, never really worked all that well.

Happy to see a new Star Trek series.
Not happy that I will have to pay for it.
Star Trek has paid for itself over the years.
Does CBS VOD show commercials like HULU does?

Given that it's very unlikely for me to get VOD over here and since I'm something of trekkie I'm more worried about the whens and wheres of this series. Whilst placing any series after Voyager and the TNG movies would be complcated (too much high tech avaible and so on), I'm more worried that this new production will be based aroud the reboot movies continuity, which I really didn't enjoy all that much. Granted this is speculating over nothing, but my greatest fear at the moment is that this series is going to be an attempt of adapting TNG or any of the following series to the new continuity.

Just curious why VOD is challenging in some locations? I would think it would transcend the usual issues with national broadcasting rules and systems, and the middlemen. Sort of like a Skype phone call. Financial transactions are global. I tend to use iTunes for such things, but there are a number of models (Amazon, Hulu, etc, etc.). Those mostly offer commercial and commercial-free memberships (with Hulu, it goes from $7.99/month to $11.99/month if you don't want commercials.)

Seems to me it would just be a matter of having sufficient bandwidth to stream it (or download it for later play if bandwidth is limited). Storage is cheap. Also it wouldn't just be CBS VOD. Supergirl, for instance, is up on iTunes. Probably other VOD-type places as well.

There is obviously something here I don't understand or can't appreciate, or I've got a wrong-headed view of VOD. Seems to me this should be the way everything works, but maybe I've got too much of a North American-centric view.

I have a slow DSL line.
VOD and other streaming services are really not an option for me.

I ight be wrong, but I remember trying another similar service (I think it was Netflix) and discovering it was region locked because of some copyright problem.

Yes content in Netflix is restricted by country. (Same for all the streaming services.) Some people use VPN services to get around that. Netflix has added clauses to forbid that into it's terms. Though some people in the US use it to get around routing problems. Local ISPs aren't supposed to be directing traffic based on where it comes from, but several Comcast users have shown much better streaming over a VPN where comcast can't tell the traffic is netflix...

I don't know how avid Netflix is at stopping VPN usage -- but it's pretty common for people in other parts of the world to use one to appear to be originating inside the US ... (or vice versa, appear to be in the UK so they can use iPlayer to watch BBC content).

(This is all in America, so be advised.)

I love the drug pusher route CBS is taking- first episode free on tv, all others behind the digital lock, so pay up nerds! :P

Time Warner announced that they were cutting commercials by 43% on some channels as a test run to see if more content brings in eyeballs to both cvs and digital streaming. In addition, Time Warner Cable is trying out a new package in NYC where you can get tv through the streaming app with an internet only account, no cable box needed. (repurposing the app they have for devices and the website) I may jump on that if they expand it, I know I'm paying for more tv than I wish because of stupid tier and bundling rules.
