Changing the format for future SGInc Story Workshops

08 Jul 2005 14:33 #1720 by admin
So, the debate is on. Should we change the format of our regular SGInc Story Workshops?

Any change would have one single goal: to get more writers to participate (especially new writers, but also established names too.)

1) We can keep the present format, or:

2) Extend the time between setting the workshops and their deadlines to 4 months or:

3) Introduce scene-length shorter Workshops, to run alternatively with full length Workshops (say, a full-length for Jan/Feb, then a short-length for Mar/Apr, then a full for May/Jun etc.)

4) Overlap "short" and "long" workshops: In Jan, we set a full-length Workshop with a deadline end of Feb. In Feb, we set a short-length workshop with a deadline end of Mar. In Mar, we set the next full-length workshop (dealine end of Apr) etc. etc.

5) I have no opinion, I just feel obliged to register my lack thereof.

Poll Closes Wed 13th July.

Okay, I voted for #4.

I just want to add that of the alternatives, the only one I'm definitely against is #2. I'm not sure that an extended deadline would result in more submissions. I have to admit that for me at least, it would just mean a longer time in which to procrastinate.

Maybe we should see how the short-scene idea works out before we commit to any of these proposals. I suggest that by the end of July, two workshop themes be announced simultaneously -- a theme for a short scene (due, say, by the end of August) and a theme for a full-length story (due, say, by the end of September). If that works out, then -- by the end of October -- another pair of themes would be announced. Which I think is pretty much what alternative #4 proposes.

Ok, so as Argonaut and others have pointed out, my suggestion of longer times will probably just give a lot of people more time to procrastinate, and they'll still do all of their writing in the final week. I thought about, and my own writing time usually comes in short bursts of a few days with lots of spare time, anyway. So the longer time probably wouldn't help me that much, either.

But my other suggestion of overlapping workshops seems to be popular. Glad I could contribute something to the process. Maybe one of these days, I'll find the time to actually contribute a story. ;)

Well the vote was pretty decisive. Thanks to everyone who registered an opinion.

In future, we will be holding SGInc Story Workshops for both full-length and single-scene stories.

Please keep posting your suggestions for topics in the "SGI Workshop 1.5 Topic Suggestions" forum and stay tuned for futher announcements!
