I wasn't planning to enter this workshop. My own "21st Century Magic" world isn't really well suited to the theme, and I didn't have any ideas for what to do in any established comic book universe. Then something very weird happened.

Recently, while cleaning out my closet, I came across my boxes of old comics, and I started re-reading a few. I also looked around to see what's up with the comics world these days, and picked up some back issues of stuff I used to like.

Then last night, after reading several issues of Peter David's Supergirl series, I went to bed and had a superhero dream for the first time in my life. Ironically, Supergirl wasn't in it.

I dreamt I was Superman. Or maybe I was Superboy. Superman as a teen, not the clone version. I think I switched from one to the other mid-dream. You know how dreams are.

Anyway, as Superman, I was chasing some flying woman. She wasn't in any sort of costume, just a plain dress. I'm not sure exactly who she was. She didn't look like anyone I know, in real life or in comic books. I remember being surprised at how hard she was to catch, given "my" fast flying speed.

I won't go into too much detail about what happened, but it was a weird dream, and I remembered a lot more detail than I usually do about my dreams after waking up.

When I did wake up, I just had this sense that some of the details, combined with what my imagination added after I woke up, would make a great premise for an ubergirl story. So I ran to the computer and started typing. I don't think I've ever typed that much continuously without stopping to think before. Luckily, I'm a fast typist. It took about 15 minutes, and the end result was a plot summary that's over 800 words long. That's just a bare bones outline, not the story itself.

With over two and a half months to work on it, I think I have time to flesh it out a little. Hopefully, the end result will be as interesting as it seemed when I first woke up. :)

So looking back at my dream inspired idea a few weeks later, I realized that it wasn't as great as I originally imagined. That's what happens in dreams, I guess. Not that it's a terrible story idea, but it's just not the type of thing I'm likely to write.

Looking at the topic for this workshop, I have to ask: does it have to be a world of costumed superheroes and villains, or wil any world with lots of powerful people be good enough?

My 21st Century Magic series tries to be at least somewhat realistic (as much so as any fantasy story, anyway) about what would happen if magic returned to the world, and I can't see colorful costumes coming into style just because there's magic. Ski masks might make a comeback as criminal behaviour using magic becomes popular, but that's about as far as I'd go with it.

I ask because I've been writing some new stuff in that series the last couple of weeks, and I suddenly realized who the most powerful woman in the series is, and why. It's odd, because I didn't really plan it that way when I created the character. But it just makes sense that she would be the most powerful, in more ways than one, and she'd be constantly gaining new powers, as detailed in the story I'm currently writing.

I'm enjoying writing this story, which is my current main writing project, whether it qualifies for this workshop or not. But I'm not sure that the story I'm writing is really what you'd expect from this workshop theme. The story shows how and why she's the most powerful, not what she does with all that power once she has it. That might be a later story, but I haven't decided yet what would happen in that story.

So what does everyone think? Is my story close enough to the workshop theme? Is it not close enough for this workshop? Is there any chance I'll even finish it in time for this workshop? How many different subforums do I have to post questions to before someone answers one of them? Why is this place always so quiet?

I would think that superheroes and supervillains don't neccessarily need flashy costumes and catchy codenames as long as they have powers. I'm reminded of a fanfic universe alternately referred to as Shadowverse or The Web Of Shadows. It's basically a version of the Marvel universe in which the various superpowered individuals keep a low profile. Villains hatch schemes, heroes foil them and save the world, but the general public is completely clueless that anything out of the ordinary happened that day.

Thanks for the response, JumperPrime. In this case, my 21st Century Magic series really doesn't focus on heroes and villains at all. Magic has returned to the world in force, and the stories are about how it affects the lives of those it touches. Unlike the shadow series you mentioned, the entire world does know that there's magic now, unlike the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where monsters keep attacking Sunnydale and nobody realized it.

There are some in my world who commit crimes or go into law enforcement, but most of the stories are just about the every day lives of people who gain power. The closest I've got to a superhero is "Celebrity SuperAgent", which follows the life of the best known magical law enforcement agent in the U.S. government. And again, it's about her life, so while it may include her battles against magical bad guys, it also shows how she uses magic in her private life (like the preview scene I submitted for workshop 2.4) and how she deals with suddenly being a celebrity.

Coincidentally, I'm having a hard time sticking to the workshop theme for 2.5, also. In that one, I've got a story that I think is in the spirit of the workshop theme, but it doesn't technically qualify for the wording of it. I've mailed Lfan and Admin to ask if they think it's ok to enter.

For this one, my story doesn't really seem to be in the spirit of what was intended, since it focuses on her quest for the power, not what she does with it once she gets it. So I'm much more reluctant to enter this workshop with a borderline on-topic story than I am for workshop 2.5. Just thinking about it, if I write this as I'm currently planning, you'll all be sitting there wondering why I consider it even borderline on topic until you read the epilogue at the end. The bulk of the story is just weird and completely off topic for just about any SWM topic.

I notice that the deadline for this workshop is just a few days away. There hasn't been much discission of it on this thread. Is anyone planning to enter?

I'm out -- sorry. The interactive story has been absorbing most of my discretionary writing time lately, and frankly this theme just hasn't inspired me. But I hope to submit an off-topic story by the end of the week.

I had a decent storyline plotted out for this, but for some strange reason
(like watching 4-6 hrs of TV every eve), I haven't started it yet.

I'm hoping the expression, "it's better late then never" works here. Thought up the story last week and started writing it a couple days ago. Wont be done for the deadline. So, if I may ask for a lil extension, maybe a couple more weeks. I hope that'd be cool.

Thx All

Even with the extension, I'm probably out. I started writing a story about the most powerful woman in my 21st Century Magic world, but it's a long one, and I'm a slow writer, and I'm working lots of overtime the last few weeks at work. So I doubt if I'll finish it. I'm only about 25% done now. Besides, it's really only borderline on topic.

If I don't finish my story, I will probably submit what I have so far. It won't be complete, but I don't want to bail on my own topic. My story started out well but inspiration just does not seem to be there as much as the last two stories I did.

So the contest deadline is past. Where are the stories, admin? Hogging them all to yourself? Reading before posting to make sure they're all on topic? Don't let me rush you. :P

Thanks in advance to whoever did contribute stories this time around. I didn't have time to finish my borderline on-topic story. Maybe in a few months, I'll finish and share it with the crowd. And thanks as always to admin for organizing everything. I'm looking forward to some good reading material for the weekend. :D

If you HAD submitted your story on time, you would know that they have a little problem with the server and can't post until Monday anyway.

I have not had much of a week. One of my two A/C units went down
Sunday am (a problem on a 109 deg day) during the world cup no less. Got it going again and managed to see the overtimes. Then that afternoon the battery blew up on my truck, fairly far from home. Took forever to change it at 3 pm in the sun with the little tool kit that I carry in my truck. So much for my "Lazy Sunday" of watching the finals and working on my story. Had to work late Monday, but made it home on time to work on my story Tuesday night, but no sooner did I get in the door did Mrs Ace call that her car would not start (dead battery). She asked it I was still at work (about 10 minutes from her's),but no, I would be making the long drive back.

Wed night was softball tournament finals, but we were eliminated at the 8 pm semi game,so I stayed up until 1 AM to finish and submit my story.

Thursday night came home dead tired to a hot house with both A/C units
down and stayed up untill midnight to get them running. ( 113 yesterday, 115 today).

The good news is that I will be able to touch up my story (lord knows it needs it) when I wake up Sunday!

Hopefully, with a little major league whinning (see above) they can push the deadline back to Tuesday.

Leave a little money in "Lost Wages" for me as I will be over there in a couple of days for a vacation that I really need!
