Recommendations / Format Discussion for 1.9 and 2.6

16 Jul 2006 03:36 #6257 by YAGS
Since workshops 1.8 and 2.5 are ending in the same week, it looks like 1.9 and 2.6 are going to start around the same time. So I have a recommendation. Set the deadline for the 2.6 (the one with the 1000 word limit) to 1.5 or 2 months in the future, while the deadline on 1.9 (no word limit) is 2.5 or 3 months in the future. By staggering them, it'll make it easier for more writers to participate in both. When they both end around the same time, people who do most of their writing at the last minute probably won't be able to do both.

So as long as we're waiting for the stories to be posted, let's continue this conversation about recommendations. After all, why wait until we have a winner to start posting suggestions for new themes? I've got two suggestions for whoever wins workshops 1.8 and 2.5, which I'm sure won't be me, especially since I only entered one of them.

The first suggestion should be easy for any writer to dive right into, so it should encourage greater participation. Two words: Unexpected consequences

The second suggestion is quite the opposite. It's a downright difficult theme, and it might cause a low turnout, so I'm not sure if we should use it as a workshop theme. But if enough people like the idea to join in, it would certainly be different, successful or otherwise. One word: Comedy

So what do you think of my suggestions? And who else has workshop theme suggestions for workshops 1.9 and 2.6?

YAGS, "traditionally" we wait for the poll to close on a workshop before beginning the thread for the next workshop's topic. This is to allow time for as many people as possible to comment on and discuss the entries in recognition of the authors' efforts.

One of the discussion points for 1.8 is the low number of entries - something we might want to investigate before plunging into 1.9, but the place for that discussion is the "SGInc Story Workshop 1.8 Poll and Comments" thread....

Sorry been so absent from this forum as the 'creator' of the contest. But just wanted everyone to know that the SWM management is discussing a little re-swizzle of the story contests to try to keep them fresh. Any and all ideas are welcome, so please feel free to post.

Who know, we might keep everything "as is", but just wanted everyone (especailly JKAP) to know we haven't forgotten about the new contests, just re-evaluating.

Please post suggestions here. All comments/critiques welcome (unless we delete them) :P

Peace
LF

Here's what I'm thinking for 1.9. A theme that you would like to see in the near future on a website such as Mandi Adara or Superheroines or whatever. So, keep in mind mind the budget restraints or any copyright infringements.

Some very cool themes were also suggested. Maybe for this workshop we could have a vote on it. At least then, based on the amount of votes, you could measure the hype surrounding the theme being chosen...I dont know...What do u guys think?

How about for the long workshop, anyone can post anything that they like,
such as a new story or an addtional chapter of a storline that they have going or want to start. We could call it an open workshop and then vote for which ever chapter or story we like the best. This would end excuses like "I couldn't come up with an idea for that theme" or "I wanted to work on one of my old/new projects."

Of course, this is self serving for me as I do have several ideas for the next chapter of "Turnabout" that I would like to get around to writing.

Are you suggesting that we write a screenplay or synopsis for a photostory? The budget constraints you mention would limit the kind of action our stories could include -- no smashing through steel doors or scattering armies with a puff of super-breath.

Unless Kel or JonX offered to pick the winning entry and turn it into a photostory for his site ... That might provide some motivation!

I like it, too -- in fact, I suggested it myself a while ago. And if it spurs ace to write another chapter of "Turnabout," it definitely gets my vote!

A continuation theme might limit new writers...So, how about a "What if" theme. That should work on more then a few levels. And turnabout pretty much fits right into that category. I'm being biased cause the new installment of infinity crisis fits well with that category

So what's the plan? I've been busy, so I haven't been writing anything, but if you give me a workshop theme and a deadline sometime soon, I'll start thinking about it and see what I can come up with.

Anyone there?

I've got a couple of other suggestions for themes:

1. Power as a curse. ie The down side of having any sort of superhuman power.
2. Men with power. I know, I know, it's supposed to be ubergirl stories. There are a few ways to handle that here, such as doing a story about Superman being unexpectedly overpowered by a woman, etc. Or combine these two themes to make the guy's power more of a curse than blessing, which leads to him being overpowered by an ubergirl (which is pretty much the story I have in mind that led me to suggest these two themes).

Replied by Ordo Cabaal Templarus on topic Re: Recommendations / Format Discussion for 1.9 and 2.6
Long:

1. A day in the life of the 'Zeppo' of a group of a Ubergirl and her circle of friends, for good or ill.

2. The creation/awakening/birth of an exotic ubergirl... Explaination: something that clearly does not have fully humanlike descendants, something with clearly inhuman heritage. Elves, AI Mecha-girls, Aliens (not the Star Trek king please), Demi-goddesses with otherworldly features, and so on.

3. The Ubergirl makes a choice (or refuses to) that will affect the universe she lives in for a long time ahead. This could be the choice of life and death of a major villian, protecting one city in favor of another, or some kind of other conflict of morality and or common sense.

4. A Ubergirl's encounters a situation that forces her into hindsight of choices made in the past and how they affect her in the future. Sort of a remembering all the people she saved/killed, criminals apphrehended/recruited/raped, and so on, and her choosing of what she would do in the future.

Short:

A Character Bio/Background Sketch of an Ubergirl or her universe.

An Ubergirl discovers something about her 'Jimmy Olsen' that she didn't know before that may change her opinion of him, for good or ill.

An Ubergirl meets someone from her childhood.

An Ubergirl's confidence/ego is tested

Here's another suggestion, which would probably only work for a longer format story: unusual settings. So the story could be sci-fi set in outer space, a Tolkein-esque fantasy realm, a time from Earth's past, or a vision of Earth's future, just anything other than present day Earth.

That describes most of my stories ... and it would give me a spur to finish either one of the two longer projects I've been working on.

Brief note for short story number 2:

Put "Dick Malverne" instead of "Jimmy Olsen".

I like the "Ubergirl accidentally causes destruction through inexperienced misuse of her powers" suggestion that has been thrown around here in the past. If that topic hasn't already been done - I think I'd like to settle on that one for the next short story workshop.

I like that too, Spulo but JKap being the winner will get his wish and the topic of selection (will be posted officially soon). As for the TV them, I've heard rumblings that someone had a story in the works so hopefully they'll post it soon.

Also, "off topic" fiction is always welcome at any time -- workshop or not!

Peace
