It may have worked well in the concept of Terminator as it's goal, and Kristanna portrayed her as she would have been expected to.
Cold, no emotion, heartless, so with no human connection, not really my cup of 'T'...

While androids in most fiction are portrayed as emotionless machines, basically flesh-covered robots, I think that's a 20th century mistake.

Given where we are today with AI, the likelihood of convincingly real emotions in full function (let alone super functioning) androids is very high. In fact, we may get the facial expressions and synthetic emotions figured out before we have the mechanics set to go with it.

So portraying androids as being capable of successfully passing for human (albeit maybe tripped up by something like Blade Runner's Voight-Kampff test) seems appropriate in 21st century fiction. That combined with an android's superhuman strength and durability, and perhaps other specialized enhancements, is fair game, IMHO.

The British TV show Humans was interesting in that regards.

And given that the largest application of network computer power went to Porn in the early days of the Internet, I've always believed that something akin to a SexBot would arise as one of the first commercial applications of synthetic humans. Mostly female androids of spectacular beauty to start with.

Given the early ones are likely to be a rich man's toy, why not make them Security bots with superstrength and relative immunity to bullets at the same time?

I'll put my money goes on the Japanese marketing such machines first. Think Weird Science.

The bots that contact me are souless machines that do not converse like a human.
I can spot a bot in my DM's by the second line
Rando DM: Hello
Me: Hello
Rando DM: How are you doing?
Me: BLOCK and move on with my life.

Also when filling out a form online I get a chuckle when a Bot asks me: Are you a Robot?

Agreed... the cheap-ass, disembodied ScamBots are pretty obvious now. But I've seen some examples of synthetic conversations that are pretty good from the research labs. Also from some of the work going on in Japan.

But like the scanky SexBots in some of my fiction, the cheap ones hanging out in sleezy Spacer bars aren't state-of-the-art. Same with ScamBots. Outrageous SciFi fantasy and reality will likely merge a lot quicker than we might think.

I predict progress will be rapid given there is much money to be made. The leading-edge Tech will trickle down to ScamBots and FakeBots in such a way that it might start to get harder and harder to spot them quickly. Imagine where that's going to be in 10 years?

But when will you first have a conversation with a Bot that you don't recognize as one?  When will you watch a video that you think is real, only to find out later it was a very good DeepFake?  Not too long, I suspect.

But having an encounter with a synthetic human which we think is real?  Probably a fair bit longer than my expiration date, but it would be totally cool to meet an android who is both convincingly human and superhumanly powerful at the same time.  Some of you might have that privilege. Once they've got the synthetic human thing over the Uncanny Valley, then adding superstrength, etc. is just a matter of turning up the power knobs.

And remember, Tech doesn't proceed linearly... look how much Deep Fakes have improved in just the last year. AI is likely to follow an exponential curve.

The challenge will be getting the mechanicals of walking, talking androids right given that we humans are VERY perceptive when it comes to body language and facial expressions. Can the Uncanny Valley get crossed in some of your lifetimes?  Likely, in my thinking.

But will laws get enacted that prevent false identities such that Registered Bots have to somehow signal that they are bots so no one is taken in?  Will android power levels have to be capped at human levels to keep us safe?  How do we prevent someone from producing Unregistered Bots with the limiters removed, or with amped up synthetic muscles? An android that looks like a teenage Supergirl and who can bend a real crowbar like the rubber ones in our genre videos?  Would that be exciting or scary? Could videos be replaced by actual encounters?

These might be real discussions on SWM or its successor in 20 or 30 years. Some of us have already been online and discussing such topics for 30 years. Some of you might be having very different discussions in another 30.

The universe of undetectable virtual fakes, and eventually convincing ambulatory android replicas of humans, is just over the horizon. And adding superstrength and many of our favorite other powers might not be far behind that. Assuming its legal to do so.

In Westworld the robots begin as disposable play actors in an amusement park for humans.   They are supposed to forget the trauma they suffer in their roles, but some of them become self aware and remember what the humans have done  to them.   A bloodbath ensues as the robot rebellion wipes out all the humans in the park.  Some of the characters that were supposed to be human turn out to be robots.     The robots seemed attractive if they were playing a friendly human, but when they turn into killing machines it is disturbing.   Maybe the point is that humanoid robots should be treated fairly like humans to avoid eventual payback if they become self aware.

Very interesting thought. Treat your bots right or they will rebel. They have the intelligence to be self-aware. And how does a bot define pain and suffering.

I grew up in a time when dogs were not considered self-aware and weren’t thought to feel physical and emotional pain like we do.  Now we know otherwise (some dog owners always knew). But it took science to convince some people.

Will we treat bots as disposable gadgets, or as sentient beings? Can or will they rebel ala Weatworld?

Interesting that some of those themes were touched on way back in the first Star Wars. Thank you Mr. Roddenberry. It took Data and the Next Generation Star Trek to get there for that franchise. Now it might conceivably become part of our lives in a very few decades.

Fascinating…

I was thinking more about someone like Vision to be honest, but to answer that last question I like to think that there would be different levels of machine rights depending on how advanced their AI is.

Then there are the humanoid robots in the alien series that seem to be on a secret mission to perform live research on astronauts with alien larvae. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_8.    There was no openly robotic female though some questioned if Charlize Theron could be an android.

Charlize Theron is already taken... she's a Velorian. Seemingly ageless, loves fighting/action roles, unkillable, high libido. No way she's merely human. <griin>

Actually, I didn't change anything. The Charlize avatar from Aeon Flux is an old one that pops up once in a while on its own. I have no idea how or why, but it's amusing.

I watched it right after you posted it, Fats. Indeed, another take on androids, of which there seem to be many. Trailer was a bit messy, but I gather that once their control system goes offline, they start doing exactly as they want. And their "wants" might include Murder. Or even something as intrinsically human as Revenge.

I've got my own take on androids partially written, set in the AU Verse. Been messing with it for years. Maybe I should publish what I have.

Here's a pict of the most important android in the story. Sil. Supposedly she's a sexbot, but in reality, she's something much different than what it says on her Title and Bill of Sale. Much older. Centuries old.

She's one of the original battle androids that were created by the Vendorians to protect them from the Arions. She can go toe-to-toe with a Prime... and win. She's one of the most powerful weapons ever invented -- all of which were supposedly inactivated and destroyed centuries ago.

But not Sil. Some salvagers found her powered down in a ancient derelict Vendorian warship. They sold her to a robotic company who redid her programming, erasing and hiding what she was even from herself, turning her into an extremely advanced and very high-end sexbot. But as time and events pass with her new owner, a backup system begins to awaken and redo her original programming, bit by bit. And with the increasing changes, a homicidal hatred of Arions begins to emerge. Even if she herself doesn't remember why at first.

Given her owner's ship is docked on a Pleasure World that's half Arion, with the other half mostly Terrans along with a few Velorians, things start to go sideways, bit by bit. Much to the amazement and concern of her owner.

She's the best sexbot he's ever found. A true companion who he can talk to for hours. In bed.

What he doesn't know, and most of time Sil doesn't either, is that she's also a Destroyer of Worlds.

There was one. Winona Ryder played a female android in the fourth Alien movie... although her character felt really underwhelming until she pulled a "killer AI" moment in the third act.

AI learns from what it experiences. When AI actors first started to interact on the Net, they quickly learned to be racist trolls, given that was one of the strongest influences they encountered. Expose them to violence, and they will learn to be violent.

But expose them only to intelligent people with kind hearts and good manners, and the AI learns to be like that. The key is that AI learns from its environment, but doesn’t have filters or an innate sense of morality.

The cool thing is that if you train up a very sophisticated AI, which only knows kindness and acceptance, then you can instantly replicate that neural net and knowledge to any number of other AI systems.

But train it with evil influences, and you can also do the same.

Suffice it to say, the results will be mixed.
