Frequency of feats of strength in stories

26 Jan 2023 22:42 #76404 by Fred9101
Here's a little topic I'd like your opinion on.

When you read a story, do you prefer to find a lot of feats of strength in it, or is it not important to you, as long as there are some?

Do you lose interest in reading if there is too much?

Personally I prefer it when it is not over the top but well placed.

Rather than Feats of SuperStrength, I tend to like the easy, intimidating effects she has on 'lesser-willed' male opponents she faces.

Context and story is king. If a writer is trying to shoehorn a strength feat at every paragraph, then that is a problem. If the feats of strength flow with the story, then have as many as you feel are necessary for your story.

Someone just discovering they have superpowers is probably going to have a lot of feats as they experiment and learn. In contrast, some superhero that has been doing this for 20 years probably is going to be extremely casual and controlled about their strength feats.

Feats of strength are great! They're fantastic! But they should feel organic and part of the story, rather than the subject of the story. Not EVERY car with a flat tire also needs to be missing the jack, you know?

I like to see "feats of strength" and "superpowers" when they make sence in a story.
I personally like when powers is used to amaze the reader in the context of the story, not when the powers are the story.

Strength, like other traits, should be part of character introduction and development. If it is part of the character (a super woman), it would be in their routine and present in casual ways, not only during dramatic events.

Their moral compass is another trait that needs to be introduced and developed. Is she humble about her strength or arrogant about it? If she's humble, she will be careful and not seek attention. If she's arrogant, she'll assert her strength toward objects and probably toward people.

In most stories, I think traits of characters (including strength and assertiveness, kindness, or meanness) should be introduced early as these traits will remain in the reader's mind throughout the rest of the story.

In my opinion... introduce strength early, along with mood/character, and tease it through the rest of the story, in small ways as well as big ways.

...or a certain Miss Diana Prince, undercover as Wonder Woman...
