This is a perennial problem in many groups I belong to... how to handle those who lurk but don't contribute. I've seen it handled many ways, from purging the member lists without warning to ignoring the issue.

My view is very much biased from the perspective of a content provider... if I visit a group and enjoy something, I try to post some acknowledgement of that, if only to encourage the author, artist or the person who dug up some information and posted it for others to share.
If I get feedback on a story or a photoenhance, I'm very much encouraged to do more. If I get nothing back, then I move on to something else. Appreciation is all the reward we get in the free content business.

Sometimes feedback also helps improve the quality of content, but not everyone has the time to do that (constructive criticism takes time to prepare).

So my take is that the price of admission for readers or viewers of free sites should be to post an occasional comment, praise or constructive criticism as is appropriate. Otherwise, content will gradually dry up as providers/authors/artists/webmasters lose enthusiasm or they go where they find more interested readers/viewers.

Seen that and done that enough times regarding my own site and others.

Anyway, my 2 cents worth... I think its a small price to pay for the hundreds of hours some of us spend each year preparing content and/or keeping a genre like this alive.

The last time I checked this was still a free country. You are free to speak, or not to speak. I have no problems with lurkers.

I think we all have somewhat different motivations for writing. I got started mainly because I wanted to give guys like MarkNew and DKC just to name a few something for them to enjoy, since they had provided me with some great reads over the years. Hopefully, I have been successful in doing that.

The other side of the coin is my writing partner Argonaut. He really enjoys the feedback and it makes his day. I think that most of the other writers on this site are more like him than me.

I would strongly encourage folks to leave positive feedback as it does really motivate many writers (and I don't mind it myself), but I would never want to see anyone be COMPELLED to leave it. This is not a job, this is suppose to be fun!

What burns everyone is cheap shots by those who never contribute ANYTHING. You can drop those folks anytime. Call it the Thumper Clause or in other words, "If you can't say anythng nice, don't say anything at all."

I don't mind comments like Gee can you guys have more large breasted Asian Girls in your story? Or I wish that this or that had happen. That just shows that you are engaged, which every writer likes. And sometimes, It gives us a couple of ideas.

But when guys are just starting out and they get hammered, chances are it will be their last outing.

Just my 3 cents.

I think ace is being a bit harsh on the lurkers... I know I'm guilty of not leaving feedback very often. Sometimes it's because I'm busy and haven't had a chance to read it, and then forgotten about it. Other times I really don't enjoy something and don't feel like leaving anything negative. And sometimes I really just don't have anything to say.

I try not to leave 1 word comments, but I still do all the time. Maybe it's more meaningful that way; a terse comment compared to no comment must mean more than always giving some sort of robotic reply.

All I really wanted to say is that I don't think we should be too harsh on the lurkers. Feedback, especially constructive, detailed feedback, requires a lot of effort. It's not easy.

Don't get me wrong, this isn't a copout for you lurkers. You should make the effort anyway :) And I will try to starting now. I read CavemanNinjaJoe's latest The Experiment Part 3, but I didn't leave any feedback because I didn't remember a damn thing from the previous segments. I will go reread them and post something later.

I don't think Ace was being harsh on lurkers, in fact, I think the opposite where he was dstating that lurkerdom is to be expected on boards and communities like this.

I think his main point -- and I agree -- is that its sometimes disheartening -- as a content generator -- to make the effort sometimes with nary a word or comment. I know looks can be deceiving on the forums cause a lot of correspondences are written via emails, but it would be nice if more people interacted than lurked. I know this genre is somewhat taboo and people like to keep a low profile, but I think the community flourishes when like-minded people share ideas, thoughts, anecdotes, etc.

My hope is that the new redesign (yes, it's still coming) will help facilitate that, making the forums easier to join, easier/quicker to post stories and other content, and allow for more conversation. To me (and I'm biased), this is the last 'active' watering hole for fans like us with most other like-minded sites becoming so dormant or jumping the shark so early.

I'd like to hope it stays around for a lil while....

I've seen one big story site has started putting a "Good Story" button on thier pages so if you don't want to comment but you want to let the author know you like the story you just click the button.
