More thoughts on our new Wonder Woman

06 Feb 2014 18:14 #35448 by JessP
For those interested in hearing what the "other half" thinks of Gal Gadot landing the role of Wonder Woman in 2016's Batman and Friends. (Or whatever it will be called)

Thanks Bloodrayne89 (and everybody else) for suggesting this topic. I have some "strong feelings" on it :)

I have to say that I was bit worried about this video reposnse, but I agree 100% with Jess.
Right now I think that WB is desperatly trying to catch up with the Avengers by pushing forward the character at an accelerated rate. What they're missing, in my opinion is that Avengers worked because there was an excellent background set-up by the previous movies and the only new characters were Black Widow and Hawkeye (no I don't count Widow's appearence in Iron Man 2 as more than a cameo/support role). So far Batsy got a decent enough characterization - although I'm not too much of fan of Nolan's version, I admit it's good - Supes is only half-done and the others are pretty much hanging. Inmy head if they want to do good job they should at least put forward two more projects before going for the big one: namely Wonder Woman (to finish off the mandatory trinity) and either Flash or a good Green Lanter movie. All spiced up with a good group of recurring supporting characters.
One last consideration. If the Avengers franchise has proven anything it's that you need a director and some actors who understand the character to get the movie working. As I said before, I think that Ms Gadot has more of WW in her than people gave credit for based on her looks. I'm a bit worried about her ability to play the role, given that she came from a modelling background (something that has been a warning sign for me very often), but at least she wasn't choosen based on bra size alone.

PS: I still think that Jamie Alexander (Sif in thor) could have been a better choice, but this is personal preference.

Can't back Jess up on any of this, really -- respectfully, of course.

People criticizing Affleck's casting were all over his physicality, his build, etc.....before they found out the guy is 6'4" and pretty big. A lot of the Internet fury over Gadot's casting is that she appears to be the exact OPPOSITE of what an Amazon should look like. For the first time, maybe ever, people everywhere cried out for a chick who is at least a little buff --- when the hell has that ever happened?

Gadot is super, super skinny, to the point that her head sometimes looks too big for her body, her shoulders are 12 inches across, and her watchband could ride all the way up to her shoulder. She, quite literally, has the body of a 10-year-old boy. I don't mean that form a sexist viewpoint; I mean it from a "I want Wonder WOMAN, not Wonder STICK" viewpoint.

As a big WW fan who had been waiting so long....ugh. While I agree that a mega-star wouldn't fit the role, there are plenty of proper 2nd-tier actresses that are familiar faces but are far more fitting.....(Jill Wagner, anyone? Now THAT.....wow. That would have been awesome). I mean, the actress who played Kal's birth mother in MOS (also an Israeli, btw) would be better than Gadot, and she's in her mid-40s.

Aside from Irons and Affleck, who I actually like for this, this is terrible, terrible casting. Terrible.

Hi Jess!
First of all, thanks for the shout out!
I'm definiately not too excited about Gal Gadot, mainly because I have no idea who she is!
My first choice was always Jolene Blalock from Enterprise. I don't know why, I just NEED to see her in that costume lol!
I totally understand the point you're making. It's completely true. Sad but true.
It sickens me to say this, but the whole uproar over Gal's casting reminds me of what my wife and her friends were going through when Hollywood was looking for the male lead in 50 Shades of Grey. All the girls cared about was which actor had the nicest abs. Acting ability was never a concern.
Ultimately the studio went with some former underwear model because, like you said, the fans made it clear they were more interested in the star's sex appeal.
And that movie is sure to suck!
So tell me this Jess: I know you have a list. Who would YOU cast as Wonder Woman????
You're awesome!
B

I am glad to see that Gal is making progress (and for all the Negative Nancys out there, that is progress). However, I think she has a ways to go. Thankfully, I hear that she still has a few months before she starts shooting her scenes.

Keeping my fingers crossed! I'm more than willing to give Gal a chance.
@Dusty: I see your point. And I'm glad to hear I'm not the only person who has faith in Ben Affleck. Finally saw Argo and I'm convinced he'll nail the part.
@Bloodrayne: Even though she's way too old now, when I was a kid the ONLY actress I wanted to see play Wonder Woman was...Sigourney Weaver. I know, I know; her thighs are pretty thin and all, but I can't think of any other actress with her chops and her screen presence.
