Crossover reality: by putting two popular superhero properties together you get an outcome that is as powerful as both properties halved.
Or, put another way... nobody is well served by crossover episodes. They are, by definition, always compromises were numerous characters all have to squeeze into a single spotlight.

I think that the problem is that when writing a crossover you have to decide to either put every ongoing storyline on hold and focus purely on the characters interactions, or keep the storylines developing and have the extra characters being mostly a glorified extra. It's possible to do a bit of both, but it's pretty damn hard (during this crossover the only time they did it right was with professor Stein).
The big issue with Supergirl here is that she's the newcomer on the team and a pretty damn powerful one. All the other characters know each other well and are used to work together to a point. As a result the writer didn't need much screentime to establish how Barry, Ollie, Sarah and the others relate to each other because that's a given factor. Kara is different, because her only established relationship is with Barry, so they had to choose to either spend a LOT of time to define these other relationships or to further the story.

Me too. In general actor allusion can be extremely funny when done right. I'm kind of disappointed that they didn't any in Supergirl season 1 when Laura Vandervoort was on set.
