We have many more years to come with this current quality of writing and production.
I am quietly confident now.

I have to agree, if the show continues with the quality of the first two episodes this season, I'm confident it ending soon isn't an issue imo.

Like Markiehoe, I'm quietly confident that this show will continue. I wouldn't be surprised if it got at least another season after this one, if not two.

Simple business imo.

Peace.

I agree with Fats. I have waited for a show like this for many years, and I am going to enjoy every minute of it!

In the end, it's primarily about ratings and whether a network thinks they could get higher ratings with a different show in that slot. And that's related to how many dollars in ads they can sell. A second consideration is the cost of production as compared to another potential show.

Networks always have new shows in the pipeline waiting for an opportunity.

The quality of writing or anything else, including what we think of it, does not really matter unless it affects the ratings, ad buys or costs. Over the years, many shows that I thought were excellent were replaced by what I considered to be terrible shows that made the network more money. Capitalism. No need to get anxious about it. Just money.

We may get some indications regarding ratings from time to time, but we don't have visibility into costs or the network's thinking process or how much they can charge for ads. So we have no real idea of its likely future. All we can do is to enjoy it while we have a chance -- and then savor the best episodes afterward.

I'm still happily watching old Firefly episodes, few as they are.

As with any television show, all you can do is enjoy it while it lasts because it certainly won't last forever. No television series does.

They already moved the show to Vancouver to better control costs. Trying to guess whether the show stays in anyone's guess. Network executives have killed shows for various of crazy reasons. Someone could screw with its time slot and kill the show's ratings. The cast could become too expensive to keep, or demand too much money in contract renewals. The studio or network could simply just want to cut costs to create a less expensive show. People get burned out on superhero shows and ratings drop. Some network executive just thinks it is time for change, or they can create something that will get better ratings.

Network executives cancelled Firefly to replace it with a "yet another soap opera about rich people" called Pasadena that did not last a single season. The major reason being the show was not the big ratings hit that they wanted despite its popularity and steady audience. There is also the classic example of the original Star Trek series getting cancelled.
