Another good episode this week, following on from the two good ones prior :)

This one was nice to see two of the supporting characters get a bit of time in the light, and in a good way. I loved the narrative with J'onn as, in addition to character building, it gave some nice insight into the martian mythology. Harewood and Carl Lumbly (whos face I remembered, but couldn't place until I found out he was from Alias) gave great performances.

The storyline with Maggie and her father was, well, lets just say I felt that was more of the preachy-politics I could do without. Especially with the line her dad gave about "building a wall". Since when did Lynda Carter say she was building a wall in this universe??? Anywho, I actually thought Lima gave a really good performance, and was nice to see Carlos from 24 again :D

I especially LOVED the opening scene with Kara, J'onn and his car LOL :P That was well played and I really hope they embrace some more of that goofy/cook-iness :D (LOL especially the Brittney scene later on). Sure, it probably won't gel with most, but I think the show should embrace some of that. More so then their politics (which, judging by some forums, is the reason ppl are turning away from the show). Legends epitomizes this in the sense it knows what it is, and embraces it.

Sure, a lot of the other characters, including Kara to a certain extent, played little to no role in this episode. But I think it worked. Especially in J'onn's case, which to me, has made him a more interesting character now that his father is in the fray. It also showed that not all episodes need to be building up some overarching arch.

Sometimes its nice to build characters up, so when shit does hit the fan, it has more impact. Especially when its done well, as in this case.

Well done Team Supergirl. HAT-TRICK! :D

Look forward to the next episode :)

Peace.

The dual story line of reuniting with a estranged/ lost father was pretty clever.

This episode was a little light on action but every scene with Jonn's car was classic!
More of that kinda "embrace the comic booky stuff" please.

I'm going to agree with the consensus: the car was great. And I loved (as kikass2014 called it) "the cookiness". It's the right kind of thing to be taking from the comics. The britney scene included, all the way to the befuddled look on J'onn's father's face when they pulled back the convertible top.

I do really appreciate casting Carl Lumby as J'onn's father, it's perfect casting. (Carl Lumby was the voice of Martian Manhunter in Justice League (Unlimited) and some other cartoons).

Supergirl did _just_ enough in this episode. She's the one that finally got through to J'onn's father. During the fight she was powerful, didn't need to be rescued, and ended the fight. This signals that the writers have learned from some of the mistakes from last year. Last year started out so uneven, this season is doing a great job of maintaining consistent quality.

It does seem like we're setting up for some more Mars Attacks ... because if the enemy White Martians find out they've taken the staff to Earth, they'll come for it. That might be next season ... and it's almost great if it's next season unless they need a spacer episode.

Exactly my thoughts. This was perhaps the best supporting cast focus episode of the series so far.

I enjoyed the mars story line because I have a stronger character connection to J'onn and his dad's and it was just fun. Carl Lumby is awesome. I also enjoyed Carlos Bernard's acting as Maggies dad.

SG's little semi twirl with the staff after blasting the White Martians was cute - it got a smirk out of me.

Yep, agree they are 3/3 this season. They really have it together. I loved the car scenes too. Very clever writing.

Now we know for sure that Ali Adler, as some of us had suspected, was the problem with the writing. With her gone, the writers clearly understand what comic book TV shows are supposed to be about.

Given that the current showrunners, Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner, both have been with the show since Season 1, it's clear to me that Adler was the one who drove the poor story lines and weak thrust of the first two seasons. She held back good writers.

So, same writers but without Adler... and now it's a much better show. Leadership matters.

Good episode, although not quite as the last 2. Real fight scenes, as compared to the last the last to episodes. Is there breathable air under the surface of Mars? Does Kara need less oxygen than a human to survive?

While I take your point, I think it has long been established that Kara's greatest super power is plot :D

Nothing more needs to be said, at least to me :) YMMV :)

Totally agree. This seems to be a key point.

Peace.

One of the problem with Kryptonian depictions is the wild variation in powers. The "needing air or not needing air" is just one of the contradictions.

Personally, I liked Adam Hughes concept -- riding a meteor in, presumably to ensure it crashes into an ocean. No air required here.

I know, I know but just the week before Alex said she can not breathe underwater.

I am all for underground pockets of breathable air on Mars.

I posted the question of Adler leaving the show having a positive effect on a certain fansite and got a bit of defensive earful from two other members.

I just wanted to know why she left the show and if that had any influence on the shows writing in season three so far.

If you check out Adler's Twitter an Instagram pages, there's almost no mention of Supergirl after January 2017. She even stopped doing those inside episode videos in early 2017. Why did she leave the show? Upset about it moving to BC?

Adler got promoted to a bigger job at CBS. Probably more bucks and wider scope of responsibility.

Without her running Supergirl, the writers have become WRITERS. Up and out is a good thing sometimes.

Good writers for a great actress. That is a win-win in my book!
