Season 3 Why has the writing improved so much?

01 Nov 2017 17:24 #56840 by andyf
Why has the overall writing ben so much better this season as compared to last or eve season 1? Did it tak ethe shows producers and writer two years to figure out what works? Ali Adler no longer showrunning? Lack of Mon El?

It seems like the exit of Ali Adler was all this show needed to shine like it should have from season one.

I'm an episode behind, but have noticed a cut-down on core characters. No sign of Cat, Non-El and hardly any sign of Winn. Less cluttered to allow more character relationship / development maybe? Shown most strongly in the Far from the Tree ep.

maybe the writers are members and are reading all the comments, maybe they are just browsing the site, but the series is more in keeping with what we as a membership are looking for in the series.

The drastic change in General Lane from a blowhard in his first appearance to a competent Army Officer in his second appearance convinced me that someone in the Supergirl production team reads the comments on this site.

I think they may have been given more freedom this season. My biggest fear is that they will run out of money to pay David Harewood and Chyler Leigh and they will get snatched away to another series. Along with Melisa, they have a command presence when they are on screen. Calista had that as well.

It not so easy to figure out the plot line this year other than there is going to be a heap of trouble for Kara. I don't know how she stands it every week. Oh yea, she is SUPERGIRL!

Given the writers didn't change, it's reasonable to assume that the departure of showrunner Ali Adler is the difference

If I remember correctly, the co-showrunners for Season 3 are/were writers on the show. .

Adler's departure certainly seems to be the key point in the turnaround this season,

In fairness, the other shows I watch in the Berlanti-verse have also improved. Legends of Tomorrow is a BLAST this season :) The Flash is back to being fun, and both embrace the goofiness of being based on comic books (especially LoT).

I don't know if its something they have worked on over the summer (there must have been meetings about it), or that everything so far has aligned perfectly, i.e. the cast know the character, have chemistry by being together for a while now, or the writers know who to write for these actors now.

Whatever it is, I'm glad things have clicked together at last :D

Keep it up as I'm really enjoying all three of these shows and look forward to them every week :)

Peace.

P.S. A note to any that work on these shows and read this board - if you start losing your way, pop in here. I am sure a lot of us can point you back in the right direction :)

Will the show main its quality when Mon El returns? Episode nine, which is the mid season finale is called Reign. Is that when Sam Arias goes bad? If so, isn't that too fast of a character transformation?

Depends on what happens in the episodes leading up to it I guess.

Episode 9 is approximately 9 hours of storytelling, and nearly half way through the season. I personally think its fine if that is the time she becomes Reign. Theres still 5 hours in which she can develop more. :)

Don't forget, it can also be the inverse, If you take to long to get to X, then ppl may a) not care when it comes; b) not be there when it comes.

I think its about the right time to introduce your main bad. Flash moved forward on their main narrative also this week. So it is something that has been planned imo.

Peace.
