From pretty much the opening shot (the shot of Melissa driving is almost identical to Reese), i got a Big Little Lies vibe, and to me, that is exactly what this episode felt like - Supergirl-mashed-into-Big Little Lies
The murder mystery, the character development, the pacing, the writing, everything just clicked so perfectly. The performances from the two leads were great. The resemblance, the mannerisms (especially from the girl who played Melissa) were uncanny.
I loved so many of the small things - like the reference to Supes locking up Lex; Erica Durance as an FBI agent who looks like Alura (and is in fact J'onn); to using Martian Manhunters car to drive up there and back Genius.
Sure, the season took a small detour from the main narrative thrust, but man what a detour I absolutely LOVED it
Probably the best episode of the season so far imo
Fucking WELL DONE Team Supergirl. That was outstanding
Look forward to next weeks episode
Peace.

Super Nancy Drew
Well done.
In my opinion the girl that played young Alex was dead on casting.
Could be her younger sister.
On a downer the whole "Don't use your powers" to help people scene..
A hold over from the dreadful Man of Steel movie is just so wrong.
Lets say in the real world, I had a boy who at age 15 was 6'4, 250 pounds and could deadlift his own weight.
Not beyond reason in the real world.
I would teach him not to be a bully or flaunt his strength but if the time came and something heavy needed to be lifted to help another person I would expect him to lift away.

Also, there were just enough special effects to make it Supergirl, but not enough to interfere with the storytelling. Absolutely perfect.
I also enjoyed the setting and scenery along Howe Sound just north of Vancouver. I did a lot of boating there a few years ago as it's almost in my backyard (albeit just across the border). I so love the PNW.
(The only nit with this episode is that apparently the next ten years went by with Kara acting human all the time, at least until the opening scene of Season 1. Or so Season 1 led us to believe. Here's hoping there are other great stories in that period that we'll discover later. Kind of hard to believe that Kara kept her glasses on for the next decade. If anything, this experience should have encouraged she and Alex to work together.)
But back to this episode. The direction by Rob Greenlea was outstanding. In looking back, I find that he directed one other Supergirl episode (the one titled "Alex" in Season 2). I'm going to go back and watch that episode later today to refresh my memory and see if I find the same excellence in the directing.
I think that perhaps Rob has a special touch for this show, and I hope we get to see more of his work.
Anyone know if he's slated to direct future episodes?

Just one minor continuity flub. At the start if the flashback ,Eliza says Jeremiah is working ,but J''onn visits in disguise. Hasn't the DEO told Eliza that her husband is dead yet? J'onn promised to watch J Dancers daughters before he died.

That's actually a pretty good catch. Didn't spot that myself tbh.
The point you made Shadar about Kara and her powers, I'm thinking maybe she did some low-key uses only. I think the scene with season 1 is that she became SUPERGIRL as oppose to using her powers for the first time. At least that is how I reconciled it.
I think when you get 3 seasons into a show, unless you plan it all out from the beginning, little breaks in the continuity invariable show up. Either that or things get retconned.
Just the way of things. Why I prefer to watch closely, but not too closely Something has to be majorly wrong for me to notice lol
Peace.

I do recall her saying in Episode 1 that ("I haven't flown for years"). I had trouble with that at the time. I mean, you can fly and you never do it? Come on.
But I have no problem with them tweaking things that were said in Season 1. Retconning is as old as comics.
I would much prefer they pick up on where they are now (i.e. as shown ten years ago) as depicted in Midvale episode and show that she's been doing stuff all along, but that she didn't decide to do the whole Supergirl thing until the saved Alex in S1E01.
I'd love to see more "Alex and Kara when they were teenagers" stories. I really liked the actors they hired to depict young Kara and Alex. Give them more work. Please.

For instance, why was 15yo Kara in the same class in high school as 17yo Alex?
And yes, they loved the episode and the actors. One of the gripes was that 15yo Kara's eyes were way too blue. I noticed that too, but loved it (obviously given my infamous image tweaks). But that brings up the question of why her eyes aren't that blue now that's grown up. (Do Kryptonian eyes darken with age?)
IO9 is an uber-nerdy site, so keep that in mind.

Agree totally
Though I think the concept (Adventures of Young Kara) can't support a whole series imo (maybe it can?), I would like them to return and show more episodes like this. It creates nice character building moments, as well as world building. Especially if they tie the flashback (which they did do loosely in this episode) into the main narrative of the season.
Peace.

If that is their gripe they are reaching.
My daughter as a freshman was in an elective class with all juniors and seniors her first year of High School.
The class in question looked like Basic American History.
Since Alex was a science major she might have taken this "easy" class just to fulfill her history requirement to graduate.
Her dim bulb girlfriend might be in the class for the same and other reasons.

Agreed. Also was a small town high school so not like that prob had a full array of AP classes.

Actually, they had a long list of issues. The mismatched ages in a classroom was just one. They reserved their harshest critique for Jonzz who was a real dick for assuming the appearance of Kara's mom. Her real mother was recently killed, so you copy her appearance to confront Kara to take advantage of her still raw emotions? Very dickish.
Anyway, lots of other stuff from a nerdy perspective in that link. Some valid, some not. I just provided the link as another perspective into the show by people who mostly like the show and REALLY liked the Midvale episode, warts and all.
But no real nerd can leave any detail unexamined.

I really liked Erica as her mom. It caught me completely off guard. I though it was going to be a hologram or a robot. I was completely suprised that it was Jon. I really love twists where the reader/viewer
Is completely taken by surprise. DKC is a master of that.
Team SG is on a roll and I hope it to continues. Great Job!

. Jones appears along with Emma aka Ruby Arias i Tremblay in the upcoming film Nomis. Those two are not the only live action DC actors to appear in that film. Minka Kelly , who plays Dove in the upcoming Titans streaming series. And last, but not least, the Man of Steel himself, Henry Cavil has the male lead in Nomis.fats wrote: one element of the show that was stunning apart from the scenery was Eliana Jones, we need to see more of her in the series.
