A new costume

Jimmy Olson stood behind the most powerful woman on Earth, watching her as she stared through the Venetian blinds at the crowd gathering outside. Her short blonde hair glistened in the filtered sunlight.

“I know you get tired of people staring at the cutout in your white costume, Karen, but don’t you think this is a bit of an over-reaction?”

“It’s not like I actually need clothing, Jimmy.”

“Maybe you don’t, but think of the rest of us. We still have to walk.”

She continued staring out the window. “There are tactical advantages to shocking the bad guys when I fly in. Most of the really dangerous criminals are men, and men can’t help their unconscious first reaction. That buys me a few seconds, and seconds save lives.”

Jimmy walked over to rest his hands on the warm steel of her bare shoulders. “But don’t you think a press conference dressed in this new costume is going to defeat the purpose? When it comes to the shock and awe I mean. The whole planet will be gawking at your pictures an hour from now.”

He tried not to stare at the way the metal slats of the blinds were hanging up on her Kryptonian-firm nipples. Gravity had no more effect on the woman the world called Power Girl than did ordinary human customs. Unlike her cousin, who was seemingly happy with his wife, Lois Lane, Karen Star had a guy in every city. Jimmy was just glad he held that honor in Metropolis, for her physical skills were not limited to deflecting bullets while punching out bad guys during her leaps over tall buildings. She’d never adjusted to the limitations of living among humans. But then, unlike Clark, she’d grown up on Krypton, not Earth.

She released the blinds to turn around and smile at him. “Well, I see my new costume works just fine on you, Jimmy my boy. And I’m overdressed compared to how you usually see me.”

He laughed. “The difference between nothing and a couple of square inches of black fabric isn’t exactly the definition of overdressed. So, you’re really going to do this?”

“It’s not like I have wrinkles or sags or anything. And half the bad guys I fight are fundamentalist Muslims these days. The sight of a naked woman melts their brains. Especially a bulletproof one who can fly. Besides, my old costume kept getting blown away anyway when I smothered their bombs. This will be cheaper.”

“It’s still going to get blown away,” Jimmy smiled. “What there is of it anyway.”

“Which will freak them out even more. Good.”

“Have you like talked to Clark about this?”

“Of course. He hates the idea even worse than you.”

Now Jimmy understood. Karen had always made a point to do everything the opposite way that Clark did. It was her way of asserting her feminist independence from the man that most of the planet worshipped as a demi-god.

Their relationship had recently soured further after he’d dare mention that the two of them were the only hope for continuing the Kryptonian race. Motherhood was a bridge too far for her now. Especially with a man who was older than her father had been when she left Krypton. Yet despite her anger, Jimmy knew she was listening to the faster tick of her biological clock. Unlike humans, Kryptonian fertility was limited to the first thirty years of a woman’s life. A strange limitation for such an otherwise powerful race.

It was also a limitation that none of her human lovers could overcome. Her invulnerability was not limited to her skin and hair, and she grew violently nauseous when exposed to weakening Kryptonite.

“Well, then there’s nothing left to discuss,” Jimmy shrugged. “I’ll go out there and make some preliminary remarks about your new look, and then you can fly in and land in front of me. Which will give me a moment to exit stage left. I’m sure I’ll be invisible at that point anyway.”

“How long should I stay?”

“Three minutes exactly. Time for the photogs to get their clicks and for you to explain why you’re doing this. Don’t take any questions. Just fly off, and make sure you go supersonic as quickly as possible. The shockwave and sonic boom will rattle them enough for me to get away. I’ll meet you back at my place for dinner.”

“Assuming the bad guys take the day off.”

“They will after your little press conference.”

She leaned down to kiss him, her full, soft lips melting against his own. “For luck.” And then she was gone, papers swirling in her wake.

Jimmy closed his eyes as he took a few moments to compose himself. For the hundredth time, he wished he was still a simple photog and not her Press Agent. The next week was going to be a full-scale press riot. But once Karen made up her mind, there was no changing it.

He walked past the plaque she’d hung on his wall. “Do or Die”. The simple motto of a superwoman.

Some days that was just about how things went for him too.
