Supergirl Promotion on SWM

Supergirl Promotion on SWM was created by fats
Hi All,

Today I've changed the front page of the site and I have removed the Supergirl module and have replaced it with the updates module.  It has occurred to me that they show has lost a lot of energy from this site so it's a waste to have something that most  people no longer watch or if they do watch it enjoy it, this site is about the whole ubergilrl genre, not just one show, so it's better to promote other stuff rather than that.

People can still make posts and threads for the show it just won't have its own section on the front page.

I agree fats - Melissa's SG has had her own spell cast over here for series 1 & 2, time to wrap her up. I doubt the series will last past a season five. Good call.

Makes sense... all shows rise and fall. Some in one season, others in four or five. It seems to be a natural process.

Hopefully this isn't the last we'll see of a Kryptonian on the small screen.

I think the public is starting to get superhero burnout in general. I also think CW may have over-extended themselves with five different superhero shows at the same time. If you want to see how Supergirl will last, keep an eye on the ratings for it and its other CW shows. If one of the shows gets cancelled, the ratings for that show will give a good idea about where the breaking point is for other shows.

The other question is whether or not Melissa Benoit wants to move onto other things and what her contract requires of her.. It is a steady paycheck but typecasting is a problem that many actors and actresses actively try to avoid.

Just to clarify something. This doesn't mean that the Supergirl TV show section of forum is closed, just that it won't have a dedicated tab on the main page any longer. It's still possible to post and create thread there.

I think the public is starting to get superhero burnout in general.

Its not this tbh.  The show has lost its way, has become garbage and people are tuning out.

If the show was better written, maybe make it ABOUT Supergirl and not real-world politics, people might still be watching it.

Burnout has nothing to do with it, ask Marvel.  Captain Marvel is the most anticipated movie of 2019, as listed by IMDB.  And Avengers: Endgame is number 2.

Sometimes you have to call a spade, a spade.

Peace.

I agree with you completely about the poor writing and the loss of focus on SG as being the hero and protagonist of each show, but I disagree on it losing significant market share due to politics. Certainly not in the demographic that they depend upon for advertising revenue.

By and large, I believe the primary demographic for the show feels it connects them to the real issues of the day even as it portrays fantasy characters. That has become an expectation for dramas. Look at all the cop shows like NCIS, Homeland, Blue Bloods, etc etc, etc. They all show exaggerated views of current politics, albeit with more subtlety. Mostly anyway.

Even though CW specializes in fantasy and quasi-SciFi, they've tried to follow that pattern, albeit with a juvenile political flavor that favors a younger audience.

The problem was that the writing was stupid and too preachy, as opposed to just merging politics into the narrative as background like many other shows do. That's just another sign of immature and low skill writers who don't understand that you don't have to slap someone in the face to get their attention.

But in the eyes of a young audience who grew up with social media, which is always slapping people in the face, that's the way their world works.

Instead, give me more shows like Expanse, and I'll be a very happy camper. Imagine Supergirl with the kind of serious writing, characters and special effects like Expanse... that would blow me away.

I'm going to put it even more simply than bad writing or the harping on the politics.

The show is a bummer. I don't feel better after watching it nor do I feel like I worked through a story that was worthwhile like Schlindler's List or 5cm sec.  All the hate, dissention, and 'reality' they are putting into the show makes it difficult for me to watch and there isn't a payoff for it.

Add to the fact that Supergirl acts stupid -- and yes sometimes she does stupid things that Supergirl and Superman do.  Who else just catches a grenade and LOOKS at it until it goes off.  THAT is normal character-level stupid, which isn't what I'm talking about. It's the stupid things that lead to her needing to be saved (most of the time by a guy!)  that get to me.

I see enough on the news that would put me in a bad mood, I don't really need/want to see that in all my entertainment.  If it's _good_ enough, then it's worth sitting through and it can be cathartic.  But .. Supergirl isn't that good.

The other shows you listed it's in their very premise, the DNA that makes the show to make the commentary that they make.  And they usually have nuance.  The DNA of a Supegirl show should be showcasing Supergirl and hope. Instead Supergirl saves Agent  Liberty's wife FROM A HUMAN ... only to have Agent Liberty's wife go radical and support her husband.  That's a failure of Supergirl to inspire hope and that goes against what should be the core of the show.   Now .. IF there is a payoff for all this .... it's worthwhile.  The story isn't over yet ... but the writers have trained me to expect no payoff.

OTH, the last episode I had showed Supergirl lifting a cargo container.  More of that please. ;-)

A relief, to be honest. I'm still enjoying Supergirl and the show forums are (from the few times I've visited) a toxic mess.

This way, I'm less likely to be tempted to visit or end up there by accident.

When I made the announcement I did not expect this thread to be used to attack the show,  This is why I've had to do what I really did not want to do, some people still like the show and want to support it. Next year we'll review how we promote and where we can support stuff and it might mean a redesign of the forum.

So please if you must reply to this thread, can you please not use it to attack the show, as that is not what this thread was all about.

Thanks

To be fair, by this you mean only sing the praises of the show.

Because I don't see anyone "attacking" the show, just responding to other posts in the thread.

If you like the show, good for you.  More power to you.

In all the discussion I have participated with regards to this show, the taste of the person was never a subject.  No one has ever been attacked or even insulted.

So I don't see why you feel to be so defensive and protective of this topic (even going so far as to imply censorship).

Can you explain please?  I am really curious.

Peace.

Ok, let me explain what I mean in my last post, I started this thread as an announcement of a change of the front page and why I made the changes, I should have locked the thread but I was in a rush and there was a number of posts before I got the chance to lock it so I left the posts in place.  The overarching theme of the replies to the thread is simple, SG is bad I'm glad that it's not being promoted, as someone who has put a lot of time and energy into the SG series promotion on this site it pains me to see the vitriol directed to the show.

One thing that really hurts is the idea that I'm censoring people, this thread as I said was an announcement yet people have used this to pass comment on the show and all I have asked is for people to not to use this thread to denigrate the show there are enough threads that have that element in them.

I'm glad that I'll be working over the next few days so I'll be elsewhere.

I hope that explains what I mean if you need a further expansion of the post I'll do that on the 27th.

I find it highly amusing that there are people still stating as if it's fact that SG is delivering content that young people actually want.  I have to wonder if the creators of the show also have such blinders on.

The ratings explain the inaccuracy of this style of statement quite clearly.  Precipitous drop in the demo (that's those aforementioned young people) starting about halfway into season 2 (when the preaching started) and pretty much steady decline since.

It's really quite simple - if they were giving people what they wanted, ratings would at the very least stay mostly constant and certainly not drop at the rate they have.

Now - who here thinks that they could have at least held 'The Flash' numbers if they had ditched the public service announcements and instead laid out a great or hell even just OK story with one of our favorite characters?  Sadly, I'm thinking PSA's are the prime motivator for the producers and if so, shame on them for making it more difficult in the future to sell a product such as this.  The producers might have an agenda they want to sell, but investors will be looking at the numbers and not the social 'benefit' of funding such a production.  One can't expect to ride the Marvel super hero popularity (well earned) forever.  Their lack of 'knock people over the head' PSA's doesn't seem to have hurt them in any way with young people showing up to see their movies.

I'm really sorry, but this thread was meant to be just an announcement and an explanation of a technical decision from the staff, not another place to flog a dead horse. As such this thread is now locked. If you wish to continue the discussion about the merits and flaws of the Supergirl TV show you can do it in the appropriate section, which (I'm going to repeat myself) is still online.
