It had been a long time since I read the books, but I enjoyed the portrayal of Lady Jessica and the Bene Gesserit.

While Lady Jessica was “detuned”  from the books, the actress and writing and the portrayal of the Bene Gesserit still delighted me. But then, it has been many decades since I read Dune.

I’d love it if she got amped up a bit in the sequel. Kikass mentioned she should have been more of a bad ass instead of mostly hiding her abilities until truly needed. He’s right, but clearly they wanted to make her more nurturing and compassionate in the movie, and that mostly worked. The book Jessica was hard as steel and sharp as a blade, yet still affectionate at times. Even as Paul’s father knew she could easily best him in any athletic activity, most of all combat. That and she had the Voice.

Maybe we’ll see more of that as things get increasing dire in the expected sequel. Here’s hoping anyway.

I’m interested in the thoughts of those who have more recently read the books. Is there promise for the movie’s Jessica and the Bene Gesserit?

With regards to Dune, the bulk of Jessica's story is mainly in the first half.  There is a large sub-plot involving her and Thufir (the Atredies Mentat) where he suspect her of being the traitor (as opposed to Huey).  He confronts her with that and she.....puts him in his place shall we say.

That was cut from Villenue's version for.....I don't know tbh.  Considering the runtime of that film (and its the FIRST of TWO parts)  you could have easily kept it in.  I guess they wanted to keep the story focused on Paul for newer audiences.  Which I can understand.

Jessica in the second half of Dune is pretty much a passive character.  The story mostly focuses on Paul and his awakening.  It brings the Fremen in more and its about Paul's rise through their ranks and his revenge.  Kind of.  Dune is not a simple book lol :D

For the casual, it seems like Paul is the "hero", but that is not really the case.  And he is constantly at war with his mother and the Bene Gesserit as he begins to understand what he is.

In the second and third books - Dune Messiah and Children of Dune - Jessica is again pretty much a secondary character as far as I can remember.  Theres plotting and stuff, but I don't want to go too much into it as its a bit spoilery.

His sister Alia (who is grown up in Dune Messiah - which takes place 12 or so years after Dune) is wicked.  I remember her being pretty badass, much to Paul's chargrin if I remember right :)

If you are interested in the Bene Gesserit, the last 2 Herbert books (Heretics of Dune and Chapter House Dune) are nearly ALL about the Bene Gesserit and their war with their counterparts - the Honoured Matres.  Think Jedi vs. Sith.

This story takes place SIX THOUSAND years after the events of Dune, and follows on through a descendent of the Atredies - Odrade (who is super badass imo).  It goes into a LOT of details about the Bene Gesserit, their schools and their teachings.  History and bloodlines play a HUGE part in the lore of Dune.

Ofc, there are, what I consider "non-canon", books written by Kevin J. Anderson and Herbert's son Brian.  Supposedly based on Frank's notes for his unfinished 7th and final book in the original saga.  But I don't believe it tbh.

The quality and concepts are just not the same.  The Dune saga is VERY philosophical at its core.  Read the fourth book God Emperor of Dune.  If people think Dune is "un-filmable", good luck with the fourth one lol :D

But if you really want to get a Bene Gesserit story, I think there is a prequel series that deals with their formation or something.  Like I said, haven't read it, and probably never will.

Wow, that was a long post.  Think I will stop there lol :D

Peace.

Maybe we'll get lucky and wind up with the "Arwen treatment".   In the LOTR movie, Arwen replaced Glorfindel in rescuing Frodo from the Black Riders, one of the more dramatic moments in the early part of the saga, and she was pretty kick ass about it all. I loved that change.

It would be nice if something like that was done with Lady Jessica. I suspect she'll be a favorite of many viewers. Perhaps she's earned a larger role in the second movie than the Books would suggest.

Hoping anyway...
