Costumes?

I'm surprise no one has mentioned this yet (and forgive me if you have), but aren't costumes and clothing a big part of the superheroine fantasy?

For those who think of it as a superheroine fantasy, yes. Some people are into the very comic book style superheroines, complete with flashy costumes. For some of us, though, it's just about powerful women, regardless of what they're wearing. Although sexy outfits are always a plus. :)

Obvious examples of this type of thing are any powerful woman without a flashy costume, such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the Bionic Woman, possibly the new series Heroes (if there's any good superwoman material), and the movie Eve of Destruction (where the ubergirl is the "villain", not the heroine).

Many of the contributing writers here, myself included, follow science fiction/fantasy themes to write about powerful women, without limiting ourselves to the "superhero" genre. On the other hand, there's always plenty of Supergirl fan fiction. So it depends on each person's individual tastes.

Thanks for the clarification, YAGS. I guess that when I read the title "SuperWomenMania" I automatically assumed that it meant the 'flashy' heroines that we come to expect from comic books, like Wonder Woman or Supergirl. It didn't occur to me that other strong female characters might also be included. Buffy and the Bionic Woman are two great examples. I'm sure Xena would be another, no? At any rate, thanks for opening my eyes.

Personally, I'm all about the visuals... and the costume is key. The only thing better than staring at the super-taut physique of an invincible young superwoman is when said physique is swathed in an eye-popping, ultra-thin, skin-tight shiny spandex/nylon bodysuit. Thong bottoms, bared abs, and keyhole cutouts for cleavage get extra points.

Basically I'm gonna agree with what Yags said. The reason I havent comented on this is becuease well Yags said what I'm want to say only better than how I'm gonna say it, but what the hell.

I personally could care less about a costume. I don't mind a sexy outfit, but it's not necessary for me.

Costumes aren't a big thing to me, also on a related note the transformations, changing from street clothing to super costume, and secret identity's don't do anything what so ever for me. In fact It's something I don't really identify with.

I guess I'm not here for the traditional “superheroine fantasy.” If I had to lable my fantasy I'd lable it a power fantasy.

And as a counterpoint... I think the sexy-costume/dual-identity/alter-ego/power-up thing is my biggest draw to this genre. I don't necessarily need to see an ubergirl decimating a tank in vivid detail if I already know she's capable. As long as there are good, character driven, suspense-filled elements to the storyline - coupled with good ol fashioned superheroines (costumes & all) - then I'm stoked. There's always enough 'action' in these stories.

I find the truly good bits come in the descriptions of the girl's looks, outfits, and interactions with other people... not so much in just the wanton destruction for wanton destruction's sake. Therefore, the whole "undercover costumed superheroine gracefully moving through the world of mortals" thing is more about their secretive nature coupled with the hidden sexuality and power for me. The costume is a great visual representation of that.

You're both right. :D I used to be all about costumes ~ now I've 'matured' and can go with or without so long as the story and powers are good.

That said a "tranformation" and alter ego is still one of the best things and kind of requires a costume of some sort.

A costume further seperates the heroine or villainess from everyone else. Sure the powers do that but you know right away that she is special when wearing some sexy costume. Skimpy or purely sexy clothing is fine with me as well. Who else could pull off a sexy costume but a super woman that could turn you into ashes if you snickered.

And the moral of the story is that we all have different tastes. If we didn't, life would be boring. :)

I could not have said it better myself. I've always liked my superheroines in sexy costumes. The sexier the better!

I have a TON of powergirl pics as well as other comicon sexy superheroines. I'll try to post if I get time.

Sadly, the costumes do it for me. However the babe has to be HOT or the costume is meaningless. I suppose it's a combo package then for me. Beautiful face, rockin bod in skin tight lycra spandex leotard, unitard, pantyhose, cape, maks, and boots

I have the same case with Random, it used to be costumes and appearance for me, but now, it's more about superpower abilities and wickedness in action.

I think it’s because of the influence of great writers we have here!

For me it's always been about 2 things - a girls ability to fly, and a nice big cape to fly in. Especially if it's Satin or just shiny like the Steele's use.

I can't get enough of that. Superstrength is awesome to, but a girl, hovering over you with her satin cape just billowing slightly, perhaps touching some of your bare skin. the thought over just looking up at her absolutely stunningly beautiful, perfect body floating above you with a dirty, powerful and knowing smile on her face is just perfect for me.

Magic.

Gotta love some Knee High boots, too :)

Dave,

I like the way you think. That ability to fly with a cape that just says 'Superior' to you is awesome.
