The Asylum makes a Superheroine movie! was created by Markiehoe
Those crazy guys at the Asylum, gotta love em, have churned out a movie where Fairy Tale Princesses become modern day Superheroines.

Kinda looks fun to me.

From what i understand that 'Expendbelles' the Expendables copy with an all female action star cast(which wasn't amazing but i am not going to say was horrible) did pretty good for them in the VOD/ DVD market.

This i am guessing is a followup- Go for female action hereo market, and see where it goes. Lets support it.

I think the joke that Asylum movies are awful has never been entirely true, but i do think in a lot of ways there output in the last couple of years has improved. I know people who work and star in there movies and got to say....there often decent for what they are, to in the case of Abhram Lincoln, Zombie Hunter better then the movie it copied..

Though ouf course the big stars are Lou Ferigno and Casper Van Dien. Somethings never change.

Wait, Expendbelles was released? I'm going to have to go look for that.

And I'll probably be in for this one too, though it looks more like something I want to watch off Netflix or Hulu, it's also something I'd kick a few bucks towards (to encourage people to make more things like this).

The Asylum beat Expendabelles to the punch with the Zoe Bell starring Mercenaries.
A fun little flick in my opinion.

I watched Mercenaries on Netflix a few weeks back. I agree with Markiehoe a fun little flick. It's the sort of movie that makes Netflix really worthwhile.

I just saw Avengers Grim at Wal Mart for $10

I might pick it up at that price or wait for Net Flix, have not decided yet.

I rented this off Amazon the other night.

It gets fairly ok reviews on Amazon, but IMDB rips it to shreds, but I think this demonstrates this movie quite well. If you aren't willing to just let go and have fun and let a movie be what it is, you aren't going to enjoy this. If you can't accept effects that are "good enough", then, well, if you insist on having $100M budget effects in a movie before it's "good" you won't be happy.

Similarly, none of the acting in this movie is going to win an Academy award, most of it is isn't what I'd call "good". But it's good enough to fit the movie, and frankly, was actually much better than I expected. There were only a few times that It thought the acting was so bad that it was distracting. For example, Rileah Vanderbilt looks awesome, but she's not the best actress, though she does do the job in front of her. OTH, she seems to be able to handle the fight/action sequences like a pro. For all that none of the princesses seem to have ever been in a movie length event before (or even really TV), they do surprisingly well.

So, the plot/story isn't awesome, the acting isn't anything to get worked up about, the effects never rise to the level of making you think they actually spent money on them (etc).

That said, the movie was enjoyable, and certainly had some nice eye candy parading around the screen. I just wish one of the princesses magic powers had been super strength. But lots of very beautiful women kicking ass (more martial arts style), a few bits of spells. It never rises to greatness, but I thought it was fun.

And Casper Van Diem is well, himself. He does his job well.

The movie could have stood some plot ironing out, and a bit of figuring out what the villain *really* wanted, and what exactly the heroines were trying to to... working some of that out would have made the movie rise to something that was super-fun, as is it just was a fun experience for me.

OTH, I also watched "A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night" off netflix. It's slow, black and white, in Persian, but it's got an awesome Iranian Vampire. It was filmed in California, despite being in Persian, and most the actors being Iranian American (at least I think they are, I think the male lead is Iranian-German). I will say it harkens back to old vampire movies, with dark shadows and a cape ... er Chador ... It's filled with moody style, and a the vampiress is just fantastic. I really enjoyed it (though I must admit I was also just vegging late at night too). It IS slow in parts, but usually there are gorgeous people staring at each other during the slow parts, or gorgeous black and white cinematography. The movie is very good at mood, at saying things with images, and I really didn't mind that I didn't understand the language. It seemed very much cooler than I am, except it would save itself at moments with interesting character bits, or something funny, in a quirky way. It really is a mash up of a lot of American cinema (the male lead is dressed like James Dean, etc),, it's easy to draw lines to movies/directors that influenced this movie, but it manages to be its own blend. I wonder if it wasn't filmed in another language what I'd have thought about it, but somehow this let me divorce myself and just let the movie roll on.

But it also was a movie that I was glad was subtitled, as since the dialog was mostly sparse, you could probably figure a lot of it out, it was great to hear the actual voices of the actors. In particular, the first time the vampire speaks (I think), is when she accosts a young boy, and it was great to hear her talk, instead of something translated.

The movie is slow, but I think it also fits it's subject matter. There is a lot of isolation and loneliness, and that's amply conveyed by long empty scenes of silence. And it allows the vampire to be properly creepy/moody moving with shadows in her chador (and a few times, she's totally not, halfway through the movie she acquires alternative transportation, and it's a scene that sticks in my head). Might not be quite in line with what people here like, but I enjoyed it. No super strength shown really, she does use creepy vampire speed a few times, but it's the "run away and suddenly run into her in front of me", not that you see her move.

you are quite welcome.

I figured you can get a bit of the plot from the box/imdb/amazon, and that's probably enough to let you know what you need to know.

Actually, looking at the box art, and the description, if your response is "this is too corny, the movie is going to suck". Well, then, it will.

If you look at it and go, "this movie is too corny, it's going to be AWESOME!", then you'll have a fun time. And honestly, for all that I talked about the acting, I really was surprised at how OK it was (especially after reading it get ripped apart on IMDB. Seriously do those people not know how to balance expectations/have fun/not be a dick)?

I'll be interested in hearing what everyone else has to say about it.

When it comes to Beautiful Babes fighting evil I am definitely in the "Corny equals Awesome" catagory.

Strange to say in a movie discussing an Asylum movie(though i am going to guess actually they have similar budget levels: Indie movies are a strange place) but The Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is pretty great.

Its a gorgious movie from frame one, and pretty much each composition of Black and White and Grey is magnificant peice of Moody Art. The performances are all well done especially Shiela Vand as the vampire who does a good job of being someone it looks you can underestimate but can't and it does a great job of creating a symbolic sence of symbolic space and texture. Its a big bueatiful movie that goes into grand visuals and centers. Some of the stuff stolen from other mvoies really works as a pastiche of everything.

The Movie is kinda of slow by any sense of measure. It takes a good time for the story really to work into gear which kinda helps its mood, but does mean as towards the plot does weave in and it turns into a love story with definable characters it does almost loose something. But it doesn't take away from the bueaty and the art of the peice.

I'm not sure what made me mention it here, except that I watched it a few days after Avengers Grimm and it had a strong female lead. The movie just oozes moody art. I enjoyed it far more than I would have thought I would. For as slow as the movie is, it also doesn't seem as long as it is (if that makes any sense). I guess, despite being slow, I got sucked in to watching and didn't notice the time pass. The movie (and most of the people on screen) is just gorgeous. One of those things that works in Black and White, Color would probably have distracted, not added, to the movie. Really fits it's tone. As does falling asleep at 8PM, waking up at 11:30PM, slightly disconnected from time, and starting to watch the movie at midnight. ;-)

Did you watch it because i'd mentioned it here, or independently? I'd heard the movie talked about last year and couldn't find it. When I saw it pop up on Netflix it took me a moment to connect the dots.

My copy DVD of Avengers Grim purchased at Wal Mart for under $10

Snow White is drop dead sexy and Red while innocent looking is really fierce.

I'm only about a third of the way in so far but it's not bad.
Red's big fight scene was pretty cool.
