Justice League: God & Monsters

The great Bruce Timm is bringing us a different version of DC's big 3 in a new animated movie set in an alternate universe.

Superman is the son of Zod
Batman is a vampire
And Wonder Woman is the daughter of Ares

From the previews, it's definitely a very dark take, and I think this Wonder Woman is going to appeal to a lot of folks here.

Right now, a series of short clips is being put up on Machinima's YouTube channel to act as an introduction to each of the characters. First up is Batman, which normally wouldn't be all that important here, but he's squaring off against Harley, so I think the clip qualifies for posting. Sorry for the in-video ad

Yes, this is one of those things that might not be for everyone.

I can take Dark if it's not a long slog of dark, and has some interesting things to say/tones. I can probably take one movie -- especially as an Elseworlds kind of thing. The DC52 was (overall) too grim, and needed some light here and there. This is why I think Harley Quinn sold so well, as it was fun/different from the rest.

And somehow it's easier to take this Harley when it's written by one of her creators (Bruce Timm). And overall, Timm has build up a large cache of goodwill with me by making a lot of excellent things, so yeah, I already pre-ordered this.

Hopefully, like a good "Elseworlds" type story (some of which pre-date that name), it should hopefully shed interesting light onto the characters of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman (etc).

Batman is interesting here. In the comics, he's a triumph of humanity. His sheer focus and training allow him to stand next to gods and hold his own. (And sometimes this is a bit ludicrous, a few times Batman should be a human size blood smear.). But, a well written story and Batman has his place and proves his worth time and again. It IS possible for someone who is trained to best someone with superhuman powers who has no idea how to use them. Provided they superhuman is not TOO superhuman. (Batman vs Superman, is only possible as Superman restrains himself.)

But here? Batman has powers, he's a vampire. There is still some sense of the Batman training/control, but .. in the end he how has super-powers. So I'm interested to see if they play with that idea at all. It's what these alternative realities are for in the first place.

And it's not the first time. The Earth 2 replacement Batman, is Thomas Wayne, using the Hourman formula to gain Strength/Speed/Durability.

So wonder if DC is toying with the idea of Batman as more than human. These are the sandboxes where you paint out these idea, and see if they work after all.

For marvel's part, they amped Captain America to superhumanly strong (instead of just above top peak human condition) in the Ultimates, and then let that bleed (a bit) back into the normal Marvel Universe ... and also into the Cinematic Universe. But Captain America isn't Batman -- his origin already includes being given some Super Powers, even if it's just dweeb -> Peak Human.

You two are right in that dark isn't for everyone; it's not always something I like. But, anything Bruce Timm does, I'm in.

And I know there's members here who will probably enjoy a darker, more ruthless version of Wonder Woman, so at least some members are going to be thrilled DC is giving them something they want but usually don't get.

This Batman short looks like a Morbius type story brought to life and finally done right.


This dark tone works in short spurts.
If the whole movie is this way I'll take a pass.

We'll see what the Superman short looks like.

I shudder to see Dark Wonder Woman.
