Helen Slater sequel in the mid-80's?

04 Apr 2017 13:22 - 04 Apr 2017 13:32 #53512 by Monty
Am I imagining things, or was this really on the cards? Perhaps it was pulled aafter the poor reviews of the first film?
(Helen Slater remains the archetypal Supergirl for me back then, much the same as Lynda Carter is always Wonder Woman for the populace)

I never heard anything about a sequel back when.
I agree I always associate Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman and i alway call her Helen "Supergirl" Slater when I reference the actress.

As far as I know it was never on the cards, but Supergirl was originally scheduled to appear in cameo, or a support character in Superman 2 to help the Big Blue against Zod, Ursa and Non, but the role was cut after Richard Donner refused to direct her feature film, apparently because he didn't consider the character to have the "strength" to carry her own story.

The image is pretty clearly a fan manip with amusingly fanciful casting choices.

Yeah I have to confess I don't even remember a sequel on the cards, much I would have loved to see Helen Slater reprise her role :(

Peace.

this is fake news, there was never a plan for a sequel, the first one bombed so the studios had no interest in a second one.

That picture reminds me that Helen, being rather flat-chested, was required to wear these cheap prosthetics that had been designed for women who'd had mastectomies. They weren't very realistic back in the early 80's, as the photo shows. Really, really unnatural looking.

I'd heard that was very embarrassing for her, but given SG had always had great boobs in the comics, it became a requirement from the costume department.

Of course, Angelina Jolie had to do the same for Lara Croft movies, but hers were a lot better done.

I'm not opposed to doing this -- we're talking fantasy in any case -- but if they do it, they should make it look real. But maybe the technology was lacking back in the early 80's.

There was talk at the time that there might be a sequel if the movie did well which of course it did not. HS was on a talk show and was pretty embarrassed about her chest. She made a comment along the lines of, " The Supergirl character is very developed and I of course am not." As comic book guy would say, " Worst fake boobs ever!"

Despite that, I think she looked great and did a good job but the writing was terrible, and no amount of looks or acting skills could overcome that.

About 1-2 years later she looked great in the very funny movie, Ruthless People.
Bette Miller had the best line, "I have been kidnapped by Kmart!"

I am kinda of glad they didn't to be honest. I like how Supergirl ends on a note of Her leaving the planet, and the guy she loved for a day kinda of whistfully walking away from it all. There is a poignancy to it.

Its not a great movie, but its story has good elements, and it does feel kinda of tied up.

"This could very well be the stupidest person on the face of the earth. Perhaps we should shoot him."

So many best lines in Ruthless People.

Sorry for the OT.

A rather fanciful notion, but a good ending could have been her floating down through the portal and saying "Hello Father, hello Mother, yes I've changed quite a bit! Look what I can do now!" as Kara became the all-powerful protector of Argo City, amazing her teachers and friends with casual displays of her new Earthly powers. Wishful thinking I know....
