odds are it's a Kree uniform she wears right after she gains her powers, and for the bulk of the movie. the color scheme will hopefully change to the red and blue by the third act, though more likely just in time for the final fight scene. and let's be honest, in the context of the story, that's what it is, a military uniform and not a costume. in the military, you're not going to be fighting in a skin tight leotard, even if you have powers. you'll be wearing layers of armor. granted, we have no real idea as to the film's plot, but the MCU does tend to try to lean towards a degree of realism, so there you go.

plus, as this is Marvel's first female led movie, I doubt they want to tick off or alienate certain demographics by going the cheesecake route in terms of costume design. it's obvious that with Chris Evans and possibly Robert Downey Jr ending their tenures with Avengers 4, Captain Marvel and Black Panther will be the leads in the post-Infinity War MCU, so they don't want to take any chances here.

As an old guy who remembers the blatant sexism of my younger years, I find it hilarious (and more than a bit amazing) that now it's cool to show guys with cute butts in skintight costumes, but female costumes have to be less exploitive.

I suppose it's the overcompensation that comes with fixing a social/cultural problem, but hopefully, we can get on a level playing field while I'm still alive. Both men and women with exceptional bodies look damn good in skintight leather or latex or Spandex or whatever.

After all, we don't watch TV or movies to see ordinary people, but rather extraordinary ones.
Ordinary is Walmart shoppers on a hot summer day, which is not entertaining. At. All.

Real women in the real world like to look at attractive women in good looking clothes.
Look at the magazine rack of any supermarket or big box store.
The racks are filled with fashion and beauty magazines.
Whose buying these?

I think in fairness, Scarlet Johanson might beg to differ Her costume is pretty form-fitting, if on the bland side

And seeing as she and Elizabeth Olsen are the only two staple female Avengers, the sample size is too small to draw conclusions

Having said that, much as I would love to see it, there ain't a hope in hell of us getting the spandex-style swimsuits for female superheroes in these films
