I don't mean to be a downer (hell, I would LOVE to see a big screen rendition of Supergirl), but DC/WB (especially lately) have been announcing films left, right and center. More then likely to stay relevant in the movie sphere.

There is a Joker origin film (starring Joaquin Phoenix, NOT Leto), a Birds of Prey movie, Batgirl, the fabled The Batman stand alone, the Flash, Cyborg, SS 2, etc.

All this announcement is, to me, is someone at WB said, "Girl power is hot now, and with our best EVER success Wonder Woman, what say we make a Supergirl film?"

There is no script, no director or any actors announced (or even a release date).  Which also raises the obvious question of - will Benoist be playing the Girl of Steel in the film?  She has become iconic to many in that role, so for me, thats not a problem.  The question is, can she headline such an, imaginably, high-profile film?  Gal wasn't a superstar when she played Wonder Woman, but she was known in films (even if it was Fast and the Furious <- which I enjoy tbh :)).

Or will DC/WB keep their cinematic universe separate still - we have 2 Flash and 2 Superman for example.

So while it would be awesome to see the Maid of Might on the silver screen, I'm gonna temper my expectations as whether this will actually SEE production.  And even then, wait until a trailer (if it gets that far).

DC/WB has a LOT of problems at the moment, and it desperately needs Shazam! and/or Aquaman to be a hit (critically as well as financially) for this to get anywhere near completion imo.

Like I said, don't want to be a downer, but these are the facts.

We'll see.

Peace.

I'll say it first and take the arrows. I hope they cast someone other than Melissa. While she was OK to sometimes good in the TV show (albeit, not so much lately), I would hope the movie has a very different flavor and a different cast. I think the current Supergirl TV cast is about run-out.

And there are some young and stunningly attractive and athletic blonde actresses out there who could take the role in a different direction.
Given this is the NEW (as in post-WW) DC, there is hope that they will rethink the character. Make her more physical and less soap opera. And please, PLEASE, don't make it another origin story. I think we know who Supergirl is. I don't think we need to replay either teenage angst or early twenties "who am I?" again.

Thankfully, it's extremely rare for the cast of a TV show to appear largely unchanged in a later movie, but it does happen with fan favorites. Recall Firefly TV carrying over the cast to the movie Serenity, but that was a special case that simply wouldn't have worked with different actors.

It wouldn't be Melissa Benoist, otherwise they'd have to mirror the TV show. Like Marvel before them, they want a universe that works together.

And it would have to be an origin story. We may all know Supergirls story, but we have no idea how she fits in the DC cinema continuum.

I hope they do it! I hope they realize that writing is key.

They didn't cast Grant Gustin as the movie Flash, so they won't cast Melissa Benoist as the movie Supergirl

I agree d_k_c it will undoubtedly be an origin films, especially if they go with a fresh cast and characters.

They didn't cast Grant Gustin as the movie Flash, so they won't cast Melissa Benoist as the movie Supergirl

Good point.  Ironically, Grant Gustin would have made a MUCH better Flash then the one we got in JL tbh.

Thinking about it, I think you are right Shadar, in that the film needs a different tone to the one the show has.  Especially lately.  Ditch the more soap-y elements and focus on the comic book aspect.  If DC want to emulate Marvel, they need to get away from the dour-verse they had, and move in a brighter direction.  To be fair, they accomplished that with WW (and look like they can follow it up with Shazam!).

There are actually so many questions that can be posed for this - will they go for an "athletic" Supergirl, or more in the mold of Benoist?  Will they change her backstory (though I think this was touched on briefly in MoS)?  Who will the villain be (Supergirl, like WW, suffers from a poor rogues gallery imo)?  And ofc, who will they cast in the titular role - an newcomer or established actor?

Peace.

I don't know why it HAS to be an origin story. They could build the story without that, but instead portray her background as a series of short flashbacks to place her in the DCU.

The real issue will be the Chinese market, which is becoming crucial to movie success. I don't know how well Supergirl is understood or liked in China.

Recall that the Star Wars universe movies have all bombed in China because their viewers are missing the cultural appropriation and history that most western audiences have with Star Wars. Return of the Jedi in particular was hopeless in China given few viewers knew who in heck the characters were, or why they should care. It's so bad that the Han Solo movie isn't being marketed as a Star Wars property in China because Star Wars doesn't sell. Instead, it's going to be Ranger Solo. Apparently, the concept of a ranger works or translates well or whatever, but the key is NOT to tie it Star Wars.

The Chinese market potential is huge and blockbuster movies HAVE to do well there.

The MCU stuff is wildly popular in China because the viewers get the characters and have some history with them.

But Star Wars movies go back before China had modernized and opened up. What was still going on in the 70's in China?  Yeah, Mao and the Cultural Revolution which was hell on anyone with a connection or interest in the West.

However, I don't yet know how this applies to Kryptonian mythology.

How can they even be thinking of a Super girl film when WB studios can't even decide to make another Superman film?!

I suspect they are trying to leverage what they learned from WW. I believe that everything in the DCU has been rethought after they realized that female superheroes might save their ass. As in, they are potentially more appealing to viewers at the moment.

Which is more than fine with me.

I don't need another Superman movie. I'd LOVE a Supergirl movie that was as good or better than WW.

For the moment I remain very skeptical.
After the turd-bomb that was Justice League, the WB lost most of the credibility gathered with Wonder Woman and, as a result, there are a number of projects floating around in a limbo. Until a few months ago it seemed that a Batgirl movie might happen, but it was put on the back-burner once again.

Seems to me that this discussion thread needs to have two branches.

One branch for speculation and (hopefully) info regarding whether it's going to happen.

The second branch to discuss what we want to see in the movie if it does happen?
Like whether we'd want the SG actor to look more like my avatar or more like Melissa or more like Helen. Or something very different.

I would love a Supergirl movie even if it ended up being complete garbage to be honest. At least we would get some nice ubergirl scenes. I bet the DCCU costume would be sexier than Melissa's costume

Back when they were making the WW movie we saw a variety of costume ideas tossed around, but in the end, the movie costume was closest to the current comicbook costume. That makes sense, involving coordination and planning between comics and movies, both under the same owner.

So, what is Supergirl wearing in the comics these days?  Well, as of May, 2018, this is the new Supergirl. We might be in trouble.

I think that one was a one issue only deal, they received a lot of backlash for it. I'm hopeful they go for something more classic. Remember, when Supergirl's show first aired, they went for the classic version, despite it being the New 52 era

That's not the complete story.  That is one of four costumes she'll be wearing while she's away from Earth traveling through space.  I think there is supposed to be something special about some of them (for support in various environments).

I do not expect most of the outfits to stick around, because aside from the one that is an update to her more traditional outfit, they're all hideous.  (And even that one isn't all that great.)

That outfit doesn't look good even when rendered by Terry Dodson.  If he can't make it look good, then I don't think anyone can and the design should be scrapped.

She has already been introduced to the DCEU. In Man of Steel, There is an empty stasis pod on the buried Kryptonian ship. according to the promotional comic, she had left Krypton Centuries before in that ship. There had been speculation on this forum that she might have been on Earth all that time

Very good point. I'd forgotten about that. It's obvious that she's out there, hiding. Also the introduction comic to that movie where we saw Kara Zor El as some kind of space explorer in the distant (thousands of years) past in that ship. She might have been in stasis in that pod for most of that time, and is now walking around on Earth, pretending to fit it.

Until the day comes when she can no longer pretend to be human.

Of course, their big chance to have her emerge was after Superman died. Have her take his role. But obviously they wanted Superman back, so that option has been lost, but it wouldn't be hard to construct a plot where she needs to emerge now to save the world.

Flashbacks to the ship and pod in MOS would provide the connection. Easy.

This highlights the mess that DC/WB is in.  Everyone and their mother wants to see Man of Steel 2, especially with happy, smiling Superman that was briefly shown in JL.  So what do WB do?  Announce Supergirl  /facepalm.

They keep blowing all their moments.  Supergirl showing up in BvS, would have worked a lot better then.....ah nevermind.  Trodden this path many times :)

Like I said, would be great to see, but I will be amazed if this goes into production or is heard of again (what happened to Batgirl????).

Peace.

The really horrible thing is that Cavil is EXCELLENT at playing a happy Superman full of Hope.  He seems to have comedic timing, and the chops to pull off everything that is needed, while having an amazing phyique.

So instead he gets to be dour Superman.  Ug.

I honestly don't think the prequel comic book and frame from MoS matter.  Not one really cares. I'll bet the movie Kara will have nothing to do with any of that, and instead it's a new story. (Marvel has conveintly forgetten a few easter eggs they laid down too.)

Sad, as it's one of the times that Morrison's Eternal Superman (the yellow sun keeps him young/eventually goes to live in heart of Sun bullshit)  makes a good story  .. if you just kept that a Kryptonian is immortal/unaging under a yellow sun, that makes an interesting character.  A Super"girl" who has been around for 1000's of years, seen it all, and grown detached, sometimes in the foreground, but for a long time, hiding in the shadows.

That's a new take, and an interesting one.

I'm fond of her being an ALIEN, like she is. Someone who grew up in a different culture.  This is a bit of both.  She's be well versed in humanity, but also be this alien/odd thing due to living for such a long time.

They did something like this in a recent Doctor Who episode.
In order to save a young woman's life he froze her aging at sixteen.
(I'm making the story extremely simple)
She lived for hundreds of years never maturing.
She did have children but stopped because she would watch them grow up age and die.
She became a very bitter...you could not call her a woman.
It was very tragic.

I would not like to see a Supergirl like that.

Oh, I REALLY like that idea!!  It would be a wonderful take on the character and would open up a huge story space. She might look early twentyish, but have all those thousands of years experience living as a human (at least enough to not be widely noticed).  Maybe she's tried many ways to bring wisdom and guidance to humans, Greek, Roman, Norse, etc. etc. mythology, but has always failed. You could do anything with that concept.

You could go all the way into making her a kind of a frustrated alien who has seen it all but, but another character convinces her to try and help the people of Earth once again. Maybe during some crisis. So she adapts the technology of today while becoming a public figure as Supergirl.  She wouldn't just be another voice on Twitter or whatever, but she'd be Supergirl, and her voice would be as loud as her actions. The  possibilities go on forever.
