Sony is really pursuing some lesser known properties in the Spiderverse with a couple of female-centric superhero spinoffs.....

1) Word has it there are seeking to do a Madame Web spinoff with the Jessica Jones EP.

2) They also just hired Marc Guggenheim (Arrow co-creator/writer) to start working on a project for Jackpot.

We'll keep an eye on these....

This is truly embracing the concept that you can make a movie off characters no one has ever heard of.

I do know who both are, but I’m a long time comic geek with no life.  They’re both FAR more obscure than the GotG.  I’m not even sure what a Madam Web movie would look like.   I guess that challenge might lead to a good movie as it’s not an easy task.

And Jackpot?  It’s nice they’re picking a sexy heroine, but of all the characters in the Spidey mythos, Jackpot?  Hell half of the allure when they brought her out was “Is she MJ w/ Superpowers?”  (MJ had been absent from Spider-Man for awhile after One More Day IIRC.)

One of the reasons that you adapt a comic book movie is you can find alluring characters that have proven their appeal by Resonating with readers.. Neither of these have really done that.  I can’t remember the last time Jackpot was used ... and I’m pretty sure Madam Web is dead (though he was used a lot in the Spider-Women books.)

You can make a movie out of anything, and I guess it’s nice that Sony is not just making the Spider-Man origin story again.  Their current Spider-Man movies are excellent and their animated Spider-Man film is one of the best super hero films.

I’d love to see them spin up a different animation team and have them create something new like Into to the Spider-Verse was..  They of course should give the Spider-verse team another movie but I think that’s already been greenlit.

I mean, I would be quite happy to see one made, but does anyone else feel himself reminded of how Sony handled their Black Cat/ Silver Sable project that was allegedly in the works? Sure, by now we've left the universe that would've been set in behind, but compared to what's being pitched here, Black Cat (and arguably Sable, too) is a vastly more recognizeable character.

I've got to be honest here, I don't trust they'll make any of these. To me, it sounds like they had to announce a project again so they could keep the rights to the label.

None of these are getting made.

Sony is clueless and is literally just throwing crap and trying to make something stick.

I mean, have you read what their "cinematic universe" is called?!?!?!  Come on, a baby could thing of a better acronym.

Peace.

/K
