I think using an ordinary-looking, relatable, emotive actress for Jennifer, providing as they say the "heart" of She Hulk, is a good call.

Having Shulkie appear strictly as CGI gives them this freedom to get extreme without trying to fit a muscular female into the role who maybe lacks the acting chops. (or two actresses, one for Jennifer and one for Shulkie).

That's just technology and I suspect the best of CGI is mature enough to work in 2020. Shulkie isn't going to move and exude body language the same way as Jennifer, so the CGI flaws when it comes to believable body language might be covered up by Shulkie's "monstrousness".

As far as the rest, it al depends on the script and Alison playing the role in a convincing way, and to have enough of her personality and looks still recognizable in the CGI. I suspect that won't be hard. Hell... it kind of worked way back in Avatar, and that was ages (movie technology speaking) ago.

If they have the technology to make Ruffelo's Hulk on a TV show budget, then Allison Brie will be fine.

It hasn't been confirmed that she is cast.  Just that it sounds very, very, likely she will be.  This rumor has been a round for a while, but if she is, I'm cool with it.

Have loved her on Community and GLOW, so seeing her as Jen will not be a problem.

Kind looking forward to it, though I suspect this is at least a 2022 show at the earliest.

Peace.

my concern is that she looks old for the role, I know she's 37 but she looks older.

If its referring to GLOW, it wasn't a movie, its a series.

There are 3 seasons out atm, and a fourth and final one was to come out this year, but for the corona thing.  So it has probably been moved to next year now.

Great show btw, absolutely love it :)

Peace.

Even without using tech, I've seen enough practical effects work to say that it can done... But it's not easy nor pretty.

It's not uncommon to use makeup, clothing and speech and body language to look younger. Women do it all the time. Taking five years off is something anyone can do. Movie makeup and coaching can take ten years off.

But at least they don't have to make her into a teenager or early twentyish character.

According to the Marvel Database:

She-Hulk routinely breaks the "fourth wall" with the use of what she calls "comic awareness." According to the "Baby's First Christmas 1960" ornament at her father's house in Sensational She-Hulk #36, Jen Walters was 32 years old at the time. Walters knows American Sign Language.

I'm still not sure how well this will work. Most charactersin a TV series spend a lot of time talking and interacting with each other and
I can't think of any show that had a major character who wasn't a physical
person or someone in a suit, puppet etc. And of course if they want to stay
anywhere near the comics then the main character will have to be She Hulk not
Jen.

Isn't this how the Hulk has been handled in various Marvel movies? Bruce Banner as an ordinary man and Hulk as a pure CGI character who resembles him... at least as much as Hulk resembles anyone.

What kind of She Hulk do you think we're going to get (in CGI)?

Hyper-muscular or just fantastically toned?

The two schools of fan-thinking on how Shulkie should look are pretty widely apart. I'm definitely in the "muscular but not overboard" camp. More like a taller, ultra-defined PowerGirl in green.

But maybe we're the minority. Presuming that the recent Marvel's Avengers comics are any influence on the movie, here's a pane of theirs from six months ago:

BTW... I'll reword my earlier post to suggest comments on how WE want her to look, not what the studio will do. That's another question.

I hope that panel isn't the look they go for with She-Hulk tv show.

That looks fricking awful LOL :D

Wth is up with the lower half of She-Hulk?????  Where are her hips??? Garbage art.  But hey, this is modern day Marvel Comics.

I would much prefer they go with John Byrne's Sensational She-Hulk look.

I'll place my odds on the following:

- TV She-Hulk will not be super muscular like she is in the current Avengers run.

- Around when TV She-Hulk comes out, Comic Book She-Hulk will slim down and become less muscular  (And likely we'll get a comedy driven book.)

She-Hulk is only so blocky and muscular in the current comics due to the writer wanting Hulk for Avengers and told he couldn't use him due to Immortal Hulk (which is excellent). So he then proceeded to totally un-do She-Hulks run on the book "Hulk" and turn her even more massive and have her lose intelligence as She-Hulk.

The Hulk run wasn't great, but I got it. She-Hulk had gone through some terrible trauma (almost beaten to death by Thanos and was left unconscious for months).  it's been true since Peter David's run that psychological problems manifest into gamma-powered alter egos.   (And based on what happens in Immortal Hulk now, she-Hulk was probably killed and "got better".   Only she's more integrated into She-Hulk than the Hulk is...so was more aware of her death and recovery and couldn't face it and THAT was the trauma that led into the Hulk book..)

From some of the promo press it looks like She-Hulk changes a bit during Empyre (the current big event) and has a solo book one shot  (Immortal She-Hulk) in September.  During the start of Empyre, she got her intelligence back as She-Hulk.  (Which if things are as they should be, she should start slimming down now.)

I don't get bent out of shape by the Avengers She-Hulk, as all things pass in comic books.   I also like muscular female characters -- though she's a bit overdone to me.  And there doesn't seem to be a reason for her to stay that way.  And to then have her say that she's glad that she's "no longer pretty" because it was such a hassle to be beautiful is just idiotic and against ALL the previous characterization of Jennifer and She-Hulk.

They've indicated that the She-Hulk show will probably involve humor, and that's not the setup of the current She-Hulk.  They'll base her more on Bryne or Slott's She-Hulk.  So, toned and sexy, not blocky and muscular.

I have a feeling we'll see something based on Slott's run, where she was supposed to be Jennifer while working at the law firm, so it'll cut down on the CGI budget.

And personally, she should be muscular, but more in the fitness range than a bodybuilder, and definitely not the hyper muscular current Avengers version..  Byrne varied her muscle size based on what she was doing.

Having her slim on TV will make the comic book She-Hulk revert.

Stephanie Beatriz, who was mentioned as being interested in the role of Batwoman, would be a Strong contender to play She-Hulk. She has been touted for the role, but is tied up with the Nine-Nine unfortunately....

But, Hell, Yeah!

Stephanie Beatriz would be a cool choice.  Love her as Diaz in B99 :)

I wouldn't mind if they went for Brie's GLOW co-star, Betty Gilpin personally :)

If this gets confirmed, I'm fully in favor of it. Brie is a talented and skilled actress. Having somebody of her caliber attached to this project suggests a higher chance that they'll pull out all the stops to make this a quality production. Looking forward to it.

Being reminded of this makes me think how they are going to pull this off visual effects wise. Fully CG character? Different green lady actress like Lou Ferrigno :D?

Thanks to Linda Carter’s Wonder Woman and John Byrne’s version of She-Hulk, I’m ruined for having a super woman thing for the rest of my life.  This panel is from the graphic novel which I have a copy of in my stash.

As an FYI, a John Byrne She-Hulk Omnibus was just released, and it contains this graphic novel (though printed at a slightly smaller size than the original large-format book which is amazing).  it also contains Byrne's complete Sensational She-Hulk run and some other misc things.  The book is a thing of beauty.  (But I'm a huge fan of Byrne's She-Hulk.)

It lists at $125 but you can get it at instocktrades for $73.  A bit pricey but it's chock full of this stuff. ;-)
