But now lfan has violently forced me into participating here (he "pulled all registers" -- German expression), so I stepped out of the shadows of lurking around here for over two years as I have to admit to my shame

33 minutes in and Wow!!!
Same here, loved the bit with the elevator in the Daily Planet. Also loved it when Clark pulled her out of the sky, she had a great WTF look.
I'd say Lauren gets my thumbs up as a great Kara Zor-El.

I missed the episode because of work, were there any strength feats???
A few I think, would need to review the tape...
I believe she smashes Clark across the forrest, smashes a Cell Phone, lifts some little kids up one handed, and rips open an elevator. Minor stuff for the most part

I'm also guessing that the writers think they went overboard with the strength feats in this episode (to establish the character) and can tone them down now and do a more typical Smallville (soap operaish) plot. Mainly, to create some impossibly convoluted relationships that never get requited. Supposedly, she and Jimmy get involved, but he never guesses she's a Kryptonian. Or ever sleeps with her. Totally unrealistic stuff.
Clark's already working to teach her to hide her abilities like he does. Plus this show has very little budget for special effects.
All that means less uber effects. Too bad. They barely scratched the surface of dealing with her powers.
But at least they made one point... she can kick Clark's ass anytime she wants and she can fly beautifully. She also absorbed the "near nuclear" power of the self-destructing ship by letting it blast her upper body, although it would have been nice to show her clothing burned and frazzled as Clark asked her if she was OK. Big lost opportunity for realism. But then, she wasn't wearing much that could be burned off and still be G-rated TV.

Cannot disagee more! I thought her portrayal of Kara was dead-on in most spots. Almost exactly as I would imagine a live-action redux of the current Supergirl (rebellious teenage supergirl with a good heart but a chip on her shoulder). I thought she stole the show personally.
As for the writing (at least with Kara), while there are occassional inconsistencies like Shadar mentioned, you gotta take it in context with what they are writing for -- TV. Working backwards, you figure they have LVL signed on for 13 episodes which is the time they have for her to make an impact -- for Nov sweeps, its even shorter (7 episodes tops). In this time, they need to establish her as a character to work plots around. On the show, Clark's powers have developed with a slow burn over 5+ seasons, with whole episodes devoted to developing a power (see "Sneeze", ""Whisper", etc). Sure, its a cop-out but don't be so quick to judge it as careless or bad writing -- its just probably dealing with the constraints (timeframe) they have, as we all have a pretty good idea that TPTB hope to establish her in a spin-off once Smallville ends prob next season.
IMO, the "I can fly" part is obviously (well, maybe) done to inject some tension/rivalry between the two Kryptonians rather than have Clark simply mentor her with every power like the hearing (great scene, BTW). Sure its the "hardest" power and most unrealistic to master, but that's the same reason why they did it probably. And gotta admit, despite being "unrealistic" the flying scene FX looked VERY good! Like Shadar said, I hope they haven't blown their budget for the entire year with these first two episodes!
To me, they are more inconsistent with Clark's powers from time to time. I mean last episode (Bizarro), he COMPLETELY vaporizes a rushing tidal wave with his heat vision. Umm.....I think using that much heat woulda completely fried the forest too. Just seemed a little off-center....
My nitpicks of the writing for "Kara" episode involve mostly Lex/Lana. I used to smirk at people hatred for the Lana character over the past 7 seasons, but I'm slowly starting to see what they mean. It seems like they WANT to get rid of her but her contract won't allow it. So they think up these bizarre/twisted subplots with her to keep her involved. I'm sure it'll only get more twisted as the "clone" stuff unravels more. And since when did Lex become such a wishy-washy wussy. Kinda destroys the image of the ultra-confident, sinister villian from the comics.
Overall, I thought the episode was one of the better ones from start to finish (Green Arrow flashback one was still prob the best).
And I think LVL was awesome in her first foray, though I am nervous about the "Miss Sweet Corn" episode next which sounds like a cheesy groaner. I wonder if the producers think that too as the previews didn't even show one glimpse of that in the previews!

I thought Laura was totally outeresting. The writing was abysmal, sure, but I don't think she had any real screen presence, either.

Tops for groaners for me was the "Plant Girl" (Phantom park ranger) episode and the wrestling episode which seemed like only a cheesy plot device to cross promote WCW Smackdown and have Lois outfitted in red latex!!
Still, this thread is about Kara which was FAR from a groaner.....will stand by my original assessment: LVL is perfect physically as Kara and more than capable from an acting standpoint in this first Ep....

As long as I've watched Smallville, I've seen at least a few episodes that might be considered cheesy groaners. One that comes to mind is the episode a season or 2 back where a teen-age girl that can teleport herself anywhere is smitten with Clark.

To those who missed its there are 3 nice shots.
The beginning where Kara hits Louis at super speed and leaves Louis smiling unharmed but sleeping. Kara then smashes a phone and hits Clark like she did Luis. She dindn't know Clarck was superhuman but she must have not liked his face and stroke him with enough strength to turn him into dust if he was human. He bounces a few times.
She lifts some kids with one hand.
She forces open an elevator door.

Ah, Sarah Carter!! Still must admit she did look nice in her wedding night attire in her 2nd episode!

Speaking about Kara, what do you make of Jor-El telling Clark not to trust her? It sounds like Zor-El and Jor-El had a very strained sibling relationship and Jor-El considers any offspring of his brother's a grave threat to Earth. I guess they had to make a plot involving strained sibling relations eventually on the show.

Yeah, I loved her explanation of their family being "dysfunctional"! Some of the stuff I've read indicate there will be something made of the Zor-El / Jor-El relationship that spills over to Clak and Kara distrusting one another. I've also read that Kara and/or her family is not too keen on the Martian Manhunter who they seem to have a "past" with. I imagine -- like the comic -- Kara's background will get a little more sketchy and dubious as it unravels. Hopefuly, they'll make it a little more understandable/plausible than they do in the comics (Whiskey .... Tango...... Foxtrot!?!?!)
