I saw some speculation on the actress elsewhere as well, with a decidedly non-Amazonian Morena Baccarin apparently a front runner.

The key is the age they are looking for. The Whedon script painted a picture of a very young WW, late teens or early twenties I think. Not sure if that abandoned script has influenced the new series.

To be faithful to the comic, though, we need someone in their thirties, very tall and extremely athletic. Hair color of actress is irrelevant due to wigs and dyes.

I'm putting my money on an unknown, ala Tom Welling, in any case.

Alexandra Daddario. She played Annabeth (daughter of Greek goddess Athena) in Percy Jackson & the Olympians: Lightning Thief and was a seriously kick-ass warrior. She moves like an athlete, which is essential if you're going to try to look like you've got the strength of a thousand men.

She's also fairly tall (5'9 or maybe 5'10) and she's got the Greek goddess look down pat. Not to mention amazing eyes.

OK... last Wonder Woman mashup to celebrate the news that a new WW TV series is coming. This costume is both striking and formal, perhaps the kind of thing she'd wear to meet with Heads of State. <grin>

There are so many great looks and concepts to draw upon, an embarrassment of riches for the writing, casting and directing staff of the TV series. Wonder if they'll look around and use any of it.

If Wonder Woman return on TV, I'm so afrais that she would wear this awful neaw costume. This is not the Wonder Woman I'd like to see ! :cry:

There has to be a reason why DC made a big deal about "bringing her up to date" in terms of costume early in the summer. Talk was about preparing her look for a movie back then, but that's apparently been shelved and the TV show replaces it.

The important part is that this is DC's new look for her. Any RV production team is going to have to comply with Warner Bros trademarks, and this is the new trademark look for WW.

Personally, I like the look MUCH more than the tired old. But then, superheroines in leather and metal tickle my fancy.

I'm totally agree with you Anon ! Wonder Woman is an Amazone of the ancient Grece, so she's not wearing leather jacket and motorbike boots ! That's not feminine. The new costume makes her looks like Rogue (Malicia) of the X-men, not my cup of tea.

Just dust off the Lynda Carter uniform and be done with it. I can't believe this is even a discussion.

One school of thought is that it doesn't matter. That thought prrocess, which has strongly influenced Smallville, is that costumes look silly and any "real-life" super heroine would wear more or less normal clothing. Smallville will violate it's own rule this season, but they are still strongly in the "no capes, no tights" school.

For a true Superman fan, the cape is an essential part of the character, along with tights.

So where does that leave WW?

To be successful, they need to draw an audience that's about 10x the size of the comic-reading audience. Which says that success is defined by appealing to people who don't read comics.

I'm betting that means the new leather pants costume, given it's less comic-bookish, which seems to be a virtue these days on TV.

To that extend they need a story and a wardrobe that doesn't look silly to the 90% of viewers who have only a vague (or likely NO recollection of or attachment) of the original character.

Except they only violate the no costume rule to support the premise of vigilantes and their efforts to conceal their identities. That seems to be as far as TV writers have been willing to conceptually.

WW hardly wears her costume to conceal herself.

I agree with your point on requiring the bracelets, girdle and golden lasso... Those are part of her weapons. But those can be worked into any costume, although the lasso is problematic.

What I find interesting is that most of us were cool with Kara on Smallville wearing fairly ordinary clothing, albeit with a passion for red and blue. Even tonights "near costume" is going to lack the iconic "S". Most people are more or less OK with that.

But a WW without a Lynda type costume is unacceptable, using basically the kind of treatment as Kara. Tells me that the WW costume is more important than the character.

I kind of get that. WW has never been as appealing to mesa Kara, given her magical origins and invisible plane and Stepford Wife attitude. And edgy and slightly dangerous Kara who is trying to find a way to fit in, and often failing, is way more engaging than WW has been.

So, my wish is for WW to have a darker side, to struggle with living in this "world of men" and be a little dangerous and very unconventional. The new costume concept kind of speaks to that for me.

Where is the light heartedness? Where is the feeling of hope in our fantasy? Has the depression generation really taken over?

Superman [Movie] is a dark stalker figure? Bionic woman is a dark deranged woman? Wonder Woman is a biker girl wannabe? Catwoman… …well she’s sort of a villain – but still… …but where do you start?

Even fringe needs to be careful about not going too dark.

I liked the classic WW. I like Anon's second picture for a more warrior angle to WW. The new outfit - it's fine - it's just not WW to me.

WonderWoman Minka Kelly is HOT!

The same concepts are embedded in most media today... whether it's conspiracies or alien subversion or simply the trend in the comic books. The notable exception that's close to our interests is No Ordinary Family, which I find is excellent so far. Hopefully it won't get too deep in the dark conspiracy hole like Heroes did.

Anyway, you make a good point for WW to be different and upbeat. While I do like stories with edges, it might work as an upbeat and slightly campy series. But I think I'd prefer a deadly serious WW who is fighting super villains along with plenty of action scenes. If they could combine the Hulk movie like effects (trashing a tank or surviving a hail of bullets or whatever), I'd be in heaven.

Wonder Woman should be sexy, we should see her legs, her shoulders with her strapless top. If you continue to defend this new suit, you can expect Wonder Woman to have no powers in the future TV serie as in the 1968s comic book series. We want Wonder Woman super strong and sexy, that's it !

Actually, from a 21st century perspective of strong, independent and sexy women, the leather pants and leather jacket are far more appropriate than the original 1940's vision of femininity.

Times and sensibilities have changed. My reading of the tea leaves says there is zero chance of the iconic WW costume showing up on TV. It simply won't work in this day and age. Whatever she wears on TV, its going to look fairly closer to modern clothing than anything else.

Points to ponder:

Charlize in Hancock -- costume is sexy and modern. Same goes for Hancock.

Most of the stuff in Smallville, albeit we just had one scene with a near SG costume. Green Arrow looked goofy in costume.

Heroes.

Vmpire movies (you don't see Vampirilla costumes).

No Ordinary Family.

These are all windows into how Hollywood looks at the issue of exotic costumes. I suspect they'll even struggle with this if/when there is another Superman remake.

And I don't get the reference to de-powering her. Why would putting on a pair of leather pants rob her of strength?

Agreed, there was an attempt to portray a de-powered WW in the 60's, but that flopped.

I do agree on strong and sexy, but we clearly see the costume differently.
