Super, Wonder and Batgirls Animation Shorts!

05 Oct 2011 21:58 #24941 by lfan
OK, first the good news...as part of Cartoon Network's new "DC Nation" block (coming Spring 2012), there will be a set of shorts based on the superhroic trio of Supergirl, Wonder Girl, and Batgirl. These shorts will be 3-5 mins in length and interspersed in the rest of the blocked content.

Taking the good with the bad, the animated segment is called "Super Best Friends Forever" is written (or produced) by the guy that brought us "My Little Pony" (nope, you can't make this stuff up).

Here's a thumbnail shot at the character design...

Sup guys? The DC universe block has been going for 2 weeks now. And I believe they've shown every short listed, except this one. Which would lead me to believe, (and I could be wrong) the Super Best Friends short will debut this Saturday.

They're also using the Donna Troy Wondergirl if anyone was wondering.

It does debut this week...FYI, the shorts are interspersed during the commercial breaks during Green Lantern and Young Justice. if recording, make sure you TiVo both Green Lantern and Young Justice. There is no show called "DC Nation" which took me a couple searches to realize :)

It's...better than nothing.

If the goal is to appeal to girls, then they may well be working the right angle. Thinking like a dad with a daughter, if I want her identifying with superheroines (and I do), then it's better that the seris should appeal to young girl tastes than umm..grown up man tastes. It doesn't take a leap of the imagination to say that my wife would agree.

Considering the producer (Lauren Faust) previously worked on My Little Pony and the Powerpuff Girls, think its pretty easy to assume who their target market is....

I think it's great that they are getting superheroines out there in front of a wide audience.

If you think about the big hitters in the superhero world, they all have multiple intellectual properties targeting different segments simultaneously.

No matter if you want a fun batman or superman for kids, a slightly more grown up one for teens and adults, or grim and gritty dark knight returns stuff, they are willing to put that out there because there is a market for it and because they have saturated our culture with these characters.

I wish we were at the same point with superheroines. Animated Wonder Woman, Supergirl, and Batgirl shorts for the kids, Birds of Prey unlimited for the teens and young adults, "Kara" about to wrap up its tenth season on the WB, and Christopher Nolan's third Wonder Woman feature eagerly awaited by all.

Baby steps.

Maybe somebody who is a kid now will watch these shorts and grow up to become a TV executive...

I'll have to check out both this week then. I always catch Young Justice but I've never watched the Green Lantern show yet.

And hey, maybe they'll throw in Wondergirl for Young Justice next season. They've cleared up the legal issues, and the team is relatively lacking in muscle power compared to most teams.

Slightly off-topic, but I love this redesign (especially Batgirl).

Well saw it. And while it was very amusing it was only about a minute long, with very little in the way of powers or heroics. Most of it is just them harassing Wondergirl to let them take the jet.

In fact the only power scene at all is where, after about 6 "please's" and "no's" Supergirl stomps in anger, causing the whole building to shake and Batgirl to fall down.

Still people consider it the best short out of all of them. And if people flock to it like they did that My Little Pony show the creator also made (which still mystifies me) maybe they'll give it a full run.

Was it just me... or was Supergirl a little more chunkier then wondergirl and Batgirl?....
