Jaimie Alexander (aka SIF) NOT interested in WW

Interesting -- and brief -- comments from the actress who plays Sif in Thor. Apparently she's a big comic book fan, but some of her comments are kinda off-base I thought, considering it appears she never even saw the pilot.

But she says that if there is a good script, and it doesn't require hot pants, Spandex and boobs up to her chin, then she's OK with it. But if it has all those comic book standards, then its demeaning to women and not worth doing.

To be fair, its not just the costumes she doesn't like, but the really crappy writing that doesn't do justice to a strong and confident woman.

So that leaves me with:

1) She's absolutely right about the scripts. WW crying into her ice cream over some guy. All the rest of the crap we saw in the WW Pilot. That isn't a proper WW.

2) She's absolutely wrong about the costumes. We saw it when they tried to change WW into a 21st century outfit. Not good.
WW has always been depicted in a amazingly scant, sexy outfit (thank you DC!), and that's where the fan base is.

3) She'll only play the character if WW isn't sexualized, which of course she has been in the comics for the last 60 years or so.

Bottom line, she says she wants to see more superheroines on the screen. But, only if they are defined according to 21st century concept of a strong female character. She cites Jennifer Garner in Alias as a good example of a strong woman.

So, if we're talking her concept of a WW movie, we've got Diana as some kind of spy, and she's tough and smart and no-bullshit like Garner's character in Alias, and we've also got an intelligent, nuanced WW story with WW dressed in something that doesn't involve boobs, spandex or hot pants. Presumably miniskirts are out too.

I suppose... I mean, I'd be enthusiastic about a WW movie with an awesome plot and incredible acting and special effects, even if she's dressed like this:

But, I'd always be thinking, "Man, we could have all that and THIS!":

or better yet, THIS:

But a show with a great actress with a dynamic script and awesome CGI...? I supposed I'd give up a lot of eye candy for that. AS LONG AS she's WW's powers and strength.

That brings up another thought... I'd love to see a WW who is at Superman's strength level, can fly in space, etc. as WW has recently been portrayed in the comics, but I'm guessing Hollywood would go for someone with maybe ten times human strength. She can't toss city busses around, but she can toss the bad guys around like rag dolls.

But at what point does depowering WW begin to destroy the character? Do we need to see her bending steel in her bare hands and leaping over tall buildings, or was the WW Pilot OK in terms of strength and flight?

Lastly, would they ever portray a character as actually capable of unaided flight?

Historically, flight in the movies was very poorly filmed for technical reasons. But recall Kara in Smallville... that was good. She's like this red and blue blur that gives off the characteristic shock wave when she goes supersonic. An awesome bit of CGI, and that was low budget.

Gimmie an actress who wants to play Wonder Woman please.
No need to entice Jamie Alexander into a role she doesn't want.

While I thought JA would make a fine WW, I agree that they should start with an actress that wants to play her AND understands her. Adrianne was a perfect choice IMO but she got derailed by a shitty script.

Personally, I think women will line up 100 deep for the chance to play an iconic character, sexualized or otherwise.

I'm kinda of inclined to say move on Jamie. A big part of the whole essence of WW is the fact that she wears "that" costume and is sexualised physically. Now I'm not saying grab some bimbo, slap on the costume and you have a WW movie, beacuse their is a wealth of characterisation (sp?) and backstory to her.

The trick is to strike the right balance between these, what seem to be, two contradictory aspects.

I'm of the belief that WW is unfilmable in a way that will appeal to ALL fans of the character, simply beacuse of this balance issue. It works in the comic book medium beacuse, well, its a different medium. Kinda how I dislike the X-Men movies (great comics, doesn't work on screen for me. Same as Hulk, though he is ok as a supporting character, ala Avengers, and if handled right by someone that knows what they are doing).

But hey, thats just my opinion :)

Would love to see a Wonder Woman film, classic costume, character, the whole shabang. Will it happen? Fingers crossed, but not holding my breath :P

/peace all

Its easy to dismiss Jaimie as not understanding the character, but its more than just her. She reflects a view that I believe ensures that we will NEVER see costumed superheroines who show more skin than we saw in the Avengers movie.

Look at Smallville's "no capes, no flying" rule for Kal. What is Superman if he doesn't have a cape and can fly? Yet that series did pretty good given the genre.
The new Superman movie (this summer I believe) will tell us more, based on how well it does, but I'm guessing it won't touch the Avengers in terms of sales. And we won't have a scantily clad female anywhere in the movie.

To Lfans point, there are indeed actresses who would play the role in the sexiest costume imaginable. But nobody will offer such a role.

If we ever see more superheroines on the screen, they'll be wearing snug leather outfits and have a problem with intimacy.

Unfortunately, Jaimie was merely reflecting the prevalent sensibilities of our time. At least that's how I see it. A highly sexualized costume on a superwomen is simply politically incorrect and nobody is going to fund it.

The alternative is to make our own stuff and write lots of stories.

As George RR Martin, author of many fantasy books including the Game of Thrones says that the really bad books and movies and TV shows serve a great purpose in motivating us to do better stuff ourselves.

He wrote that he was well into his own writing when he took some time out to read Tolkein's LOTR. It was so good that he said didn't write anything for a year after that. He had to start reading crappy stuff until he jumped up one day and said, "I can do better" and started writing again. Now he's a terrific and very prolific writer.

So think of the lousy superhero movies and TV shows as a gift for our own creativity.

Just don't look for fulfillment of any of our fantasies there.
