One topic I've seen discussed elsewhere is the idea that Jimmy Olson will be Kara's boyfriend. Some people don't like the idea.

Two prior icons of feminine power on the screen (Xena and Ripley from Aliens) didn't need men. Xena was a winking lesbian and Ripley was more comfortable with acid dripping aliens than snuggling up with a man. The thought was that being in a relationship with a man would diminish them, make them less consequential. Female superheroines are supposed to be beyond all that.

Yet we see WW in comics getting all kissy kissy with Superman, when she'd always been an icon of sexual virtue. Does anyone really think she and Steve Trevor were banging away?

So some people think it will be wrong for Kara to have a boyfriend, especially an ordinary guy.

I personally think its a great idea. She might be able to lift locomotives back onto the track, but nothing in the 21st century says she can't snuggle up with her boyfriend. She might be the Girl of Steel, but she isn't made of the stuff. Who knows how far or wide her superpowers extend?

Anyway... thought I'd ask for comments on the subject here. Does Supergirl/Kara have a boyfriend and should he be Jimmy? Does that diminish her character and her power, or make her a bit more believable and 'human'? And if it does the later, does this present new challenges, given Jimmy presumably won't know that Supergirl and Kara are the same person. (Which would be a huge stretch.) Or is he the insider who knows all her secrets?

As with anything, it's all about the portrayal. "Boyfriend" could mean nothing more than him being her Lois Lane, and if they need such a character in the Superman story, it seems silly to think that the other way around is somehow demeaning to the female super. He could also be (and here's a weird analogy) the Ron Stoppable to her Kim Possible. A faithful friend who's along for the adventures and maybe, every so often, contributes something useful, but there's never any doubt at all who has the power.

I don't feel having a boyfriend, if done "right", diminishes Supergirl - just as having a crush on Lana in Smallville didn't diminish Clark Kent.

If I was trapped on an alien planet with people who looked just like me, I would likely want some companionship and friendship which could transition to romantic feelings.

Kryptonians are just scientifically advanced humans, except for the super powers, apparently. I can't imagine someone who is supposed to be a hero, filled with goodwill toward mankind, striving to use their abilities for the benefit of humanity - and then being completely standoffish and isolated in their 'secret identity'.

Why even have a secret identity, if not to mingle with the humans of this planet Earth?

I don't think this inherently diminishes the character either-however i am not sure its very interesting.

From the suggestions that have leaked it- Kara has a big crush on Olsen...but its not reciprocated. At least at first-presumibly the drama of the first season is that it slowly does, and maybe he learns her secret. See Lois and Clark

Actually exactly see Lois and Clark becuse thats the same story they did with them for like 50 years.

I am going to guess that the idea of the show is-Supergirl-Amazing!. kara-kind of a dooff-maybe or not a nerdy doof. This kind of relationship is a good way of showcasing that-he shes so good but she can't get the guy.

However the problem with that it tends to make Lois(and in this case Jimmy) kind of a love object-someone to lust over but not really get to know-there actual story isn't that drmatic-you also get the problem in a lot of Silver Age stories where she is just so unlikable and strident that you got to wonder why anyone whould go after after .

Lois and Clark the show handled it probabbly any other media. Terry Hatcher is someone who doesn't get a lot of respect on the internet but she did a great job of show casing a woman who is superfically bueatiful and desirable-but deep down thinks shes as big a doof as Clark is-and you can see also that she genuinley thinks hes a friend and maybe her best friend. The love triangle really works there becuse to a certain extent you see she likes both men- even in the shows best scene Tempus fugit can call her an iddiot for not recognizing that there the same people.

But its a will they or won't they- i think in fiction in general its a bit overused. It creates tension but its a tension thats a touch cliche Its the first two acts of a romances repeated 22 episodes of a season.

Then you have shows like Arrow which seem to be setup around giving Oliver 3 or 4 supermodel attracive women fawning him over constantly. Cause hes got ABS, money and the ability to do pull up. I am not sure thats super intresting either-its the Harrem Model from Japan-but its something.

In my script(which i stress again is based on nothing). The Story is Kara is already dating a guy. And thats just it. Dating. There sleeping together(which in Niven fashion she worries about)- but its still new and causal-in the first scene in the show. Kara however i wanted to establish-really thinks its special( which given her background she might) and doesn't want to jeopardize it by becoming a superhero(which is the shows dramatic tension-shes not a nerd or anything-she just wants to be normal girl in a world that won't quite let her)

Mike her boyfriend- is thinking of breaking it up -she is pretty but a little odd. And that's a fine dramatic tension. Over the course of the season the story is won't they get together but will commit to her, and what does that mean.

I donno- i do hope they do something here-but i hope its not a borring thing. Jimmy Olsen in the comics is not one of my favorites-he often comes across as a gee wilkers type to much-but well will see.

Well, in Alien Ripley was written as a gender enutral character, so the lack of any relationship was to be expected, whereas in Aliens she and Hicks were an interesting couple-to-be. They like each other and there's a tension between them, but they're not totally dependent from each other.

I think that most depends on the angle: if Kara having a boyfriend means that she becomes totally dependent from his affection and approval, then I would be very happy to torch the writer's ass; on the other hand I think that it's pretty natural to look for some kind of "human" contact and a romatic angle is a good way to explore Kara as a character rather than a costume.

Would you rather see Jimmy as an insider, perhaps her confidante, who knows all her secrets?

Or the boyfriend in her normal life who has no clue that she's Supergirl?

The first approach is easier to imagine and could be fun, but the second is harder to envision. I mean, she's not really human, and presumably that's more apparent in the fine details, right down to heart beat, scent, and everything else you learn about someone you are intimate with. Basically ignoring the lifting locomotives over her head thing.

Even in Smallville, Clark wasn't exactly "compatible" with Lana, other than when she briefly gained the same powers. The Earth tremors scene?

Or does the show just hand wave all that away or make their relationship chaste? And how believable is that in 2015?

Hard to say. Although one thing can lead to the other in the hand of a decent writing team who is burden with the curse of keeping things as unchanged as possible ... which might prove harder than it sounds.

Castor made a good point on Jimmy. He's not depicted in previous work as a strong character, although Smallville beefed him up a bit. Kara's boyfriend doesn't have to be physically powerful, but he should be a strongly drawn character who is doing something important with his life. Someone a Kryptonian would be drawn to based on his character and goals. Not a junior photog for the Planet as he is usually depicted.

I suppose he could be her Lois, always getting into trouble because he pushes too hard to get the story, and needs saving once in a while, from disasters and bad guys.

But anything but an ordinary run of the mill guy.

And yes, tossing a few Niven worries into their physical relationship would be fun and realistic, as in your script.

I agree that, in general, Jimmy never had much love from the authors. A lot of people seem to consider him to have a lot of potential, but everything seem always to be "around the next corner", in many Elseworlds, future stories and so on, Jimmy is usually in a pretty great spot, but how he got there is something that always happens behind the curtains.

Still I think that some else considered the why a super would date a normal person much better than I woud ever be able to.

Jimmys problem as a character is that he is one of the remients of early comicbooks love of kid sidekick characters-the young guy who says "Gee Wilikers"-though they have aged him a lot in movies and Books, you see elements of that character still-and boy is it annoying sometimes.

Whether he should be a confidant or just someone to the side....

The werid thought that came to mind for his role is hes the guy who really likes Supergirl. Hes the guy who constantly prints pro supergirl stories in the newspapers, and make her seem the best in the world. He ocasionally gets in adventures with supergirl, he helps her out, and she smiles at him ocasionally-we learn he has a big big big crush on her becuse well...shes super isn't she?

Kara....tolerates him. She barely knows him doesn't really like him all that much.

Meanwhile, theres another guy who really likes kara-hes got a big crush on her.Shes aware of it-but becuse of he old niven probelms is a little afraid to do anything about it, but gradually over the course of the season slowly relents.....this guy however really doesn't like supergirl. Which she agrees with cause, god who hates supergirl more then Kara right?

ahh idea.

My first response (before my morning coffee) to the "who hates super girl more than Kara" was jarring. This caught me off-guard. In contrast, I see Kara gradually coming into herself as Supergirl, exploring, extending, making a difference and feeling pretty good about it. Much like those "interview" videos from a week or so ago on Youtube.

That raises the question of how integrated she is. In most of the comics, she moves easily from Kara to Supergirl, and other than appearance and costume, she doesn't think of herself as changing more than her clothes and become more assertive as Supergirl.

Peter David introduced deep psychological challenges where she struggled with her two identities and wasn't very well integrated. '

Since then, they've largely showed Supergirl as her natural self and Kara as an uncomfortable disguise. She has real trouble trying to blend in with humans.

The TV SG clearly opens with her being comfortable being Kara... she's never been Supergirl. She presumably has tried to push her Kryptonian origins behind her and live like a normal human on her new world. But now she's breaking out and revealing her Kryptonian nature. But would she hate being Supergirl? I don't see that. I think she's a little afraid of herself, given she's always kept her powers inside. She can do some real good but also some real damage as Supergirl, but I think she'll find it a catharsis. She can let loose, even as she discovers she isn't very skillful at it. I suspect she'll retreat to the comfort of being Kara, but will be excited about making a difference in the world in a whole new way as SG.

That could be interesting, especially given the people she surrounds herself with are likely different as Kara than Supergirl. SG deals with criminals and aliens and military and police and various kinds of government types, all of whom want to use her or destroy her.

Kara obviously has her normal friends, a normal job and does normal things.

Would there be a different potential romantic entanglement as SG than as Kara? (You know they will stuff a lot of romantic angles into a CBS show about a young woman.) Jimmy's her best friend as Kara, but as SG, she's hanging with some serious heavy-hitters. Maybe some very hunky FBI agent or Navy SEAL who she's working with. Their strong personality and chemistry will overwhelm her at first, which makes hanging with Jimmy at lot mellower. But not as exciting. She increasingly finds herself drawn to this stronger personality who she only knows her as Supergirl.

We could have a couple of latent romances brewing as she moves back and forth between identities. Perhaps she finds that confusing and even disorienting at times. The viewers, meanwhile, are watching this bit of drama unfolding in parallel with her many other discoveries of her "two selves" as she comes out of her shell.

Of course, it's even harder to believe that actual or potential lovers couldn't tell SG and Linda weren't the same person as for Lois Lane and others not to notice that SM and Clark were one and the same.

Sorry for putting you off your coffee.

I would phrase it this way. Either the story of the first season or so is:

1. She really loves her powers, loves what she can do, but wish she could bring it into her "real" life.

2. She doesn't really like her powers and feels they isolate her-but gradually comes to accept them.

The second is the kind of Peter David Method. The first is a touch of the more classic version.

Either way i suspect the relationship of the show is between her and her powers- Kara and supergirl-and it can't be a perfect relationship. The shows drama can be about that.

When you think about it Superman at his core is kind of the second-Its been established that he really wants to be human, but even if given the chance would refuse it-cause well he can do the greater good. Thats the core of his character.

When we get into the classic kind of Nivenish, Shadaresque dileme, or Smallvillea-its less phyiscial i think then a way of being a metaphor for that. She wants to be human-but well she can't do the most basic of human actions There's this divide she wants to cross but but....

Rommance is a good way of exploring it- Your idea of Jimmy vs a solder isn't a bad one. But it something they should do. There is options there-i do think at some point he should probabbly be a confidant(i frankly thinks audiences would have a hard time buying it otherwise. See Iris from the Flash) but they should do something.

which is why i really hope they dont't go the "Superman loves wonder woman route"-cause well it totally removes either of there humanity. if they don't connect to it, whats there. Wonder Woman in particular is a character they have no idea how to deal. One of the reasons i wrote Paradise was becuse in terms of Movie universes i don't think the hard character is her persay, but well Steve Trevor-whats he like and what does she see in him-its the human. and without there just bozos in tights. This is one of the reasons i have never been a fan so much of the Xmen.

That is the key-they just have to figure out how she wants to deal. and i hope they find something good.

No casting yet (GOTTA be soon**), but here is a newish interview from the showrunner with some tidbits on the casting updates, show tone, and X-over possibilities:

www.ign.com/articles/2015/01/12/arrow-th...g-crossover-question

The legal complications of a multi-network crossover have been apparently removed, so this opens it up for Kara appearing in the Arrowverse or Flashverse (and vice versa) anytime in the future (aka "sweeps week). But with SO much talk of the Arrow/Flash overlap of late, it got me thinking of a possible cameo appearance on the season finale of either of those shows. Would be great buzz and PR move to springboard it into the following season.....

** UPDATED: Casting announcement MIGHT be today (1/12) at the TCA Winter 2015 Meeting. CBS/Showtime make their announcements (including season commits and renewals) sometime today according to the schedule: tvcritics.org/press-tour-schedule-overview/ #hopeful

Well, doesn't look like a casting announcement is gonna happen today -- at least not at TCA 15. However, CBS Chair Nina Tassler did speak to the project a little bit. I could write excerpts here, but I'll acquiesce to the pros over at EW to summarize her thoughts on the show (and the costume) here:

Except they don't actually say anything about the costume other than, 1) It's done, and 2) It's awesome.

The author of the article tosses in a couple of bare-midriff, super short skirt images from the comics.

It's important to consider who the CBS audience is. They are the people who watch Blue Bloods, the various CSI shows, Unforgettable, Criminal Minds. Big Bang Theory a the youngest audience end (which isn't very young). CBS has already said her show is going to have a crime focus, with Kara catching bad guys (presumably the really bad ones) with methods that don't necessarily require her strength.

So with new information, I'll revise my prediction for the show as follows:

1) Starts with a stressed young woman who is frustrated with her life. (Every viewer will know who the lead blonde actress really is without saying or showing anything.) We will gradually become convinced she's screwing up her life by holding back (probably in all areas of her life. Work, romance, etc. etc.). But she's afraid that people would think she's a freak if she really lets it all out, so instead she overcompensates on the wimpy side.

2) Some event forces her use her more than human abilities in a public way. She finds she likes being able to save lives that nobody else can. But her powers add more complications to her already slightly screw-up life.

3) Powerful people start sniffing around trying to figure who this "supergirl" is so they can use her for their own ends.

4) Thanks to #3, she realizes that there are some very powerful and very evil people out there. People outside the reach of the law. She wants to use her abilities to help solve crimes that nobody else can.

5) After some tribulations, mistakes and dead-ends, she winds up working with her super-smart step-sibbling, Alexa, who works for the FBI or whatever. It's is not a harmonious working relationship because of both long-simmering issues and their radically different personalities and outlooks.

6) There is a male government agent or reporter or someone who knows who Kara really is and knows how to help her bring down bad guys who have penetrated and possibly control some important government agencies. He becomes very important (think of Nation Filion as Castle). Kara becomes very fond of him, but can't truly show it.

7) Alexa, Kara and this male form a triangle that's personally complicated and loaded with emotion, but when these three come together with their respective skills (as they finally do in each show) they bring down the bad guys outside the reach of the law. Of course, all the credit for the solved crime goes to Alexa.

8) There are unrequited romantic sparks between Kara and the lead male, and sparks of another type between Alex and Kara. Lots of focus on the struggles of female empowerment in all its various ways.

Show has the same core values of all CBS's other crime shows.

And the costume won't have a super-short skirt (or a skirt of any kind) nor will it bare her mid-riff. It will be an outfit that appears to be adapted from more ordinary clothing. It will fit trimly, maybe even snuggly, but it won't reveal much bare skin. Think how all the recurring female characters appear in the Blue Bloods, CSI, Unforgettable, etc. Sexy but professional.

From the article

First, since Supergirl is on CBS, you can definitely expect the show to be a crime procedural.

Stick with the horse that brought you into town.

in all seriousness if that works great. A lot of CBS crime procederials of the NCIS model play *a lot* like superhero shows as it is, big characters science/powers that is just on the edge of reality and teams of people fighting for justice.

Hope its not as formulaic as those shows can be-really someone pointed out how timed to the minute CSI was a lot of the time-but if it works lets see.
