The Minnesota-born actress Rachel Keller ... was heading off to Vancouver to begin shooting seven more episodes of the Marvel television drama Legion, in which she stars as the self-reliant superhero Syd Barrett.
It was Fargo creator Noah Hawley who called Keller to share the news that she had been cast as the lead in Legion, which he is writing and directing. His first question when she picked up the phone was, "Is your grandmother sitting down?" In preparation for the pilot, Hawley had Keller take up the Brazilian martial art capoeira. "I've never felt stronger or more in my body," she says. And while many superheroes have physical prowess, Syd's special skill seems to be her verve. "She's a girl that had to do a lot for herself, and that's what Noah must have seen in me," says Keller. "She's very independent. What if that is a power?"

As one of the original Pink Floyd fans, heard them live in the UK prior to Piper at the Gates of Dawn release (one of the best titles of an album ever), my ears pricked up at that apparent homage to the original front man of the Floyd. A brilliant personality who did too much acid and his brain unraveled.
Hmmm... what kind of powers would a female Syd have? Before or after the acid?

mysterious newcomer, Syd Barrett (Rachel Keller). As one eagle-eyed audience member pointed out, “Syd Barrett,” was a founding member of Pink Floyd, and Hawley confirmed the choice of name was deliberate. “In the first conversation I had with the show’s composer, Jeff Russo, I said that it should sound like Dark Side of the Moon. Because that album is the soundscape to mental illness to some degree.”

Even then, Syd didn't really do much writing after he started taking a lot of acid. Before that, he was a completely charming, enthusiastic, life of the party type. He was a magnetic presence when he entered a room. He did some good music during that period. Then his brain turned to absolute jelly.
That scared the rest of the band so much that they stayed away from drugs except for a little weed. The druggy reference stuck to the band, however, and they worked it to appeal to their audience of that time (early 70's). They rarely got stoned and never worked or performed that way (other than Syd in the early days).
I never saw their music as a soundscape for mental illness, unless you consider mental illness to be a generic term for any change in mental processes. In that case, absolutely. The whole point of both weed and acid in those days was to change the way the brain works. Wouldn't have been fun otherwise.
But Syd obviously had some kind of underlying problem which exploded with the acid. Probably the same thing that made him irresistibly interesting to be around prior to the acid.
