Marvel TV News: Cloak & Dagger Trailer & New Warriors News

First a trailer for Cloak & Dagger. Dagger's not quite our kind of Super-femme, she's an energy projector (w/ some odd properties). We'll see how closely they track the comic origin to the show.

Marvel also pulled wraps off the next Freeform show: New Warriors due in 2018. It was announced before, now it's a bit more detailed, with an actual character list and a sample image of character art (showing that Squirrel Girl will indeed be the focus of the show).

Like the Defenders, a lot of the characters aren't actually New Warriors from the comic. It's like a mash-up of the Great Lakes Avengers and the New Warriors and some new characters. I'm not sure how silly they are going to make this, there does seem to be a potential for some serious, but it does look like silly/fun is the focus here (doubly so from the art).

It is interesting they left off the more famous members of the team: Nova & Namorita (her only if you are a long time marvel fan). Even Firestar and Marvel Boy have longer reach (they've been in the cartoon shows). Night Thrasher & Speedball are the leftovers from the team. Hell, Speedball is probably only known to most newer readers as the catalyst for Civil War I. (Technically Squirrel Girl was never a New Warrior, though the writer intended to do so before he left the book.)

Though if we get Speedball, I HOPE we get Niels (his cat w/ the same powers).

You can definitely see marvel marketing at play here, they now have more power & control. The only give up for this show was really Squirrel Girl, and that probably was needed to make the deal. Well, that and the name "new warriors" which marvel isn't even using at the moment. "Here, have some leftovers and Squirrel Girl and make a show so people will stop bugging us about it...."

(I don't mean that as a knock either. Good writers will make a great story out of the silliest characters, hell sometimes it's more likely as the writer will have more freedom using a non-essential character. There is enough good in the setup for the show that it could be great .... or a piece of trash. Nor is it bad if the show is a bit silly, a lot of the comic book movies and TV shows are serious, including Marvel's Netflix offerings, .. .some light humor is a good pace change.)

Hopefully, we'll get some super-strength scenes out of Squirrel Girl!

(I think the comic art might be Elizabeth Torque, it certainly seems like her. Love her. That squirrel is fantastic.)

heh. I guess I was totally unaware of the 2005 New Warriors Comic by Scottie Young.

It has microbe, Night Thrasher, and Speedball in it, which makes it closer to the show.... (they still leave off Nova and Namorita).

I'm going to read it now, but it seems close to tone they are trying for.
