Anyone familiar with business news about The CW network getting sold?

03 Jul 2022 21:44 #74910 by AUphoric
I saw a mention on another site that The CW Network, makers of the recent Supergirl series and the rest of the Arrowverse, is getting sold. With the buyer needing to assume $100 million in losses!
Anyone up to date on the business side of this?

I don't think anyone has stepped in yet with an offer far as I know.

The CW has cancelled a LOT of their shows though - such as the Arrowverse and even Riverdale is ending with its next season.

The Flash I think is the only Arrowverse show to get another season (probably its last).

That's all I know generally speaking.

Peace.

And I literally just heard yesterday that the CW has a Babylon 5 reboot series in the pipeline. Since it's being done by the original creator, I'm not quite as nervous about it getting completely messed up as with most remakes.

That was an early sign that something was up with the Marvel shows on Netflix. Season renewal announcements started getting delayed and the lesser to moderate performing shows got cancelled. Next thing we know, everything is being consolidated over to Disney+. Considering the number of DC shows on HBO Max, someone might be trying to consolidate everything DC onto a single network. That begs the question about what CW's big money making shows are if the DC franchise shows are pulled. I still argue that CW sealed their own fate by oversaturating the market, which led to poor quality and writing.

That last quote sums up CW perfectly, especially with their approach to writing and scripting SG. They were doomed from the start. I think even the cast would have realised this, but they stayed in for the easy money/contracts.

Earlier articles reflects on CW's steady ratings decline from 2006 to 2022 and its focus on 18-34 audience, while Nexstar as an operator of many local stations has more interest in an older audience and news programming. Also Netflix has streaming rights to many of the existing DC programs. Will have to see what they say after the deal has closed.

Thank you all for the information!
I'm amazed they hung on as long as they have, funding shows that lose viewers with every new episode for years!

I LOVED the original B5. Eager to see what JMS wants to do with a new version.

Some press about the merger
search for nexstar cw
www.nexstar.tv/nexstar-media-group-to-acquire-the-cw-network/

some unspecified  change is certain:   ( instead of young superhero/heroines, maybe a change to midlife and senior superheroes?)The demographic focus of the CW will also change over time, Carter said. Historically, shows like Riverdale, All American, Arrow and Supernatural have focused on viewers in their teens through their 30s. The reality, though, is that the average CW viewer is 58 years old, and Carter said that schism explains why the CW is the lowest-rated broadcast networkHe projected “lower unscripted costs,” without elaborating, and said more syndicated shows would likely be added. The CW has recently been programming 13 hours across six nights in primetime. As the Nexstar deal loomed last May, the company told advertisers at its New York City upfront presentation that it was renewing all current shows but not adding any new ones to the mix.Citing Kagan research, Carter said the CW spends “almost twice” what its broadcast network peers do on programming, a disparity Nexstar plans to eliminate.

I'm assuming "lower unscripted costs" = more "reality" TV

I think the live action comics superpowers period is on the decline. Wish it had been a bit more glorious at its peak.

That said, I’m not convinced that movies/TV/video was the way to go anyway. Personal imagination/imagery is far more powerful than the necessary adaptions and compromises for video that mostly serve to stifle my imagination.

I would have liked to have seen more excellent quality books. Maybe more good graphic novels too. But the vast majority of “creative” effort went into live action, and that mostly left me cold. That and the focus on 18-34 old viewers who were into “soapy” and
“currently relevant” stories that I cared nothing about.

I probably just sound like an old fart. But I’m not going to miss this period of super powers portrayals. Waste of time and money. I’m still waiting for realistic digital actors in what will someday pass for “authentic action” that can be programmed for any kind of super powers expression without compromise. Maybe in ten years.

For now, I won’t miss CW or most of what has been produced in the last half-decade.

For the moment, my attention has moved to Rings of Power… along with my optimism. Tolkien’s fantasy is my second love after Kryptonian-esq characters.
