Clearly the writers were having fun with that.
That's something that comes straight out of the pages from writers here as well as on the Aurora Universe. In fact, that's been an inside joke in a lot of my stories for the last ten years.
But I've never seen reference to such a thing in any mainstream Superman comic, let alone Supergirl.
I guess I didn't expect that in Smallville. Hooray for the writers (even if they are on strike). They are willing to color outside the lines of what the comic book world allows.
Beyond that, this episode certainly revealed Lana for what she is -- someone who would exploit super powers without restraint. Even to kill.
It makes it all the more remarkable that Clark/Superman never intentionally takes a life. But that's at the core of the Superman mythos -- his absolute dedication to preserving life, even when he shouldn't.
Not that I believe that anyone with those powers could live such a saintly life. But that's another story.

Looking at that has actually got me a little cross.
I mean, it's such a sexist thing, isn't it? Woman gets superpowers, but she can't handle them and in the end the superpowered man takes them away. No doubt there'll be an epilogue where she apologises to Clark and tells him how sorry she is at how badly she used her powers, and how good it is that he has them instead of her because he's a man and only men can be trusted with superpowers.
It looks good, but...it's such a lifechanging thing that one episode really isn't enough to do it justice. She should have them forever. And he shouldn't.
Lousy Superman.
Man, i just hate how they ALWAYS do that in movies and tv series. Egads, Was i angry when they de-powered Illyria in AngelĀ“s last season just to put her in the same power level of the "boys". Altough she still kicked spikes ass all the time.

But that just says they're testing the waters. The writers want what we want. But they're afraid to commit a female to that path for fear of eclipsing a male icon like Clark.
Fortunately, Kara still kicks his ass whenever she's pissed, but I'm sure that will eventually come down to the "he wouldn't hit a girl" silliness. So she gets to wail on him and he has to understand that its because of her upbringing or something.
Maybe... or maybe she just likes to kick his ass. At least she can unload on him and not pulverize him.

She should have done more damage. Like why use heat vision first, just tear the damn safe apart
I hope the girl who gets infected with the (kugh X-Files ripoff) black oil gains super strength and does some useful stuff with it

to force the powers out of her? Maybe a "What If" story line here!
