Kara Cast!

I also like the idea of her wearing the Christopher Reeve symbol... if that was her idea, then I think I'm going to like her a lot.

In any case, she's obviously got a lot to learn... going from zero to filming episodes in about two weeks from the time she got the role.

I wonder what previous knowledge she has of Kara Zor El or the whole Superman/Smallville continuum? Or if she's cramming now.

It would be too much to ask that she's been either a fan of the show or that she's read the comics. The good news is that her back story matches the current comic book (sent to Earth to raise baby Kal El but got time warped along the way), and that book has her acting very independently. Rather kick-ass at times.

That said, I can't say I enjoy a lot of the writing of the current book, it's a bit ditzy at times, clearly written for a younger audience, but once in a while they get some interesting things going. Like when Darkseid brainwashed her and she nearly killed Kal. Apparently growing up on Krypton gave her some advantages when it came to raw strength.

Of course, in Smallville, Clark hasn't figured out the flying thing and she has, ;because everyone knows that girls mature faster".

Noting the colors of her outfit in the publicity pict... I suspect this is as close as we are going to get to a costume. Clark wears a lot of red and blue but otherwise ordinary clothing as well in the show.

It's a long running little game the wardrobe people play on Smallville. Red and blue but no tights.

Nice interview posted over at IGN with Laura. A couple of things she said I especially liked was that she's more powerful than Clark, and that Tom welling has been helping her with her heroic pose, and holding things. Lets hope for some proper uber action. I'm liking this girl more and more. Here's the link to the interview. Enjoy

Based on her interview at Comic Con (see video link above), she's not admitting to a spinoff, claiming instead to just be focusing on Smallville to see where that goes.

But if she can act and the writing is good enough and the show takes off and maintains better ratings in Season 7 than it had in Season 6, then I think this is very likely. The key is demonstrating that she (or her character) can make the TV people some money.

For now, lets be happy for the 8 or 9 episodes that she's going to be appearing in this fall and winter. And do what we can to pump up the interest level.

By the way, I've cleaned up the publicity picture of her in 'costume':

It appears her story is derived from the current comic book, at least in terms of origin. She also looks closer to my mental image of a Kryptonian teenager than Helen Slater ever did. I even like the costume better, despite being very non-traditional. IMHO.

I have to concur with Shadar here. This is as close to ideal casting as anyone could have realistically hoped for. She's very cute - and there's also something about the way she speaks that fits the part perfectly IMO.

I am absolutely looking forward to this. And I haven't really watched a TV show for years (outside of Entourage or Flight of the Conchords )

Glad to see after six years, Smallville is giving me what I was hoping for. Lauren sure seems to be a great choice but I'm still waiting for that premiere of season 7 to give her the final thumbs up.

Plus, hopefully we'll get to see her take on some super female adversaries.
