A Little Less Conversation

It was an ordinary day in the lives of John and Melinda. Days like this were rare since Melinda’s transformation into the superheroine Mindy Marvel. So they’ve taken advantage of this with John watching the Rams-Vikings game on television while Melinda was doing a little housework. She was trying to vacuum around John but he wasn’t budging. She smiled and with one hand grabbed the base of the couch and lifted it into the air!

“Holy…” he exclaimed, “Next time give me a warning!”

“Next time pay more attention”, she said holding the couch up high with one arm while flexing the other, “Besides, this is much easier!”

She set the couch down when a special report interrupted the game.

“There’s a situation at Vandalay Industries, the nation’s leading producer of plastic and rubber products, where CEO Art Vandalay, is being held hostage. The number of people inside is not known but the police and SWAT teams are on the scene” explained the reporter.

“This looks like a job for… Mindy Marvel!” she exclaimed.

She removed her glasses and let her red hair down. Melinda grabbed the neck of her long-sleeved t-shirt and ripped it open exposing the tight blue costume with the gold lightning bolt on the chest. She pulled off her track pants showing off her strong legs and her blue mini-skirt and gold belt. Going into the closet she put on her red cape and gold boots.

“Don’t you think you’re a bit overdramatic?” he asked.

“What do you mean?” she responded.

“That whole this is a job for thing. It seems a bit cheesy. Remember when that cat was stuck in a tree? You spent five minutes looking for a phone booth to change in, instead of just climbing up and getting it. I feel like I should be playing John Williams’ theme from Superman every time you go into action” he said.

“That’s a great idea!” she said.

“Ugh” he groaned.

She strode out to the balcony.

“Be back in a minute” she said as she propelled herself into the sky.

She streaked through the city as the people looked up.

“It’s a bird” a man said.

“It’s a plane” another said.

“You’re right, that is a plane…but there’s a flying girl over there!” he said.

“I think you need to stop drinking before noon” he responded.

Mindy landed on the roof of the Vandalay building. She looked down through the skylight to see Art Vandalay tied to a chair and three people in ski masks with weapons.

“Well, it’s time to drop in on these no-goodnicks” she thought to herself.

She crashed through the skylight and landed in the middle of the room. She put her hands on her hips, thrusting out her chest, her muscles tensed.

“This is a crime that you will not…bounce back from” she said.

“My life is in jeopardy and you’re cracking a bad joke!” Vandalay exclaimed.

“Okay babe stay right there or he gets a lead infusion” a masked man said, his gun near the head of Vandalay.

Mindy was a blur as she sped towards the man. She grabbed the gun out of his hand before he knew what happened. The metal squealed and deformed in her powerful grip. She dropped the useless weapon and grabbed the man by his shirt and held him high in the air. One of his cohorts, seeing his compadre’s feet dangling helplessly charged towards Mindy with a knife. He jabbed it into her six-pack abs but the blade bent on contact. Now slightly perturbed, she took her free arm and grabbed the other guy by the wrist. There was a cracking sound and the man screamed in pain. She then hoisted him to eye level with the other man and they stared at each other, shocked at what was happening. Then she flung them through the air into a pair of chairs, which fell backwards, knocking the two out.

The third man, who obviously didn’t pay attention to what just happened, unloaded his semi-automatic weapon at the heroine. The bullets ricocheted off her.

“Eep” the man said, panicked.

The man ran out of the room and down the hallway. He looked behind him to see if he was being chased then…

*WHAM*

He ran right into a brick wall called Mindy Marvel. He stumbled backwards. A light tap by the heroine and he dropped to the ground in a heap. She dragged the thug back into the room and put him with the other two. She then ripped the ropes off of the CEO. Using the ropes she tied the thugs together.

“Okay superbabe, cool it” a voice said.

Mindy turned to see a fourth man walk out from another room. He had what appeared to be a bomb attached to his chest.

“One false move and this whole building will go ka-boom” he said, “and I don’t think you’re fast enough to get to me before a push this button.”

Mindy surveyed the situation. She noticed a ball at her feet. Using her super-strong legs her golden boot kicked the ball towards the villain, hitting him in the face and knocking him out. She caught the ball on the rebound. She grabbed the vest of the man and looked through the pockets. She was surprised at what she found…

“Hot dogs”, she said, “Armour hot dogs. What kind of man wears Armour hot dogs?”

The cops came in to take the criminals away and assess the situation.

“Thank you Mindy Marvel” Art Vandalay said.

“No problem sir. It seems these men won’t be having a ball in prison” she responded.

“Not another joke…I think you’ve spent too much time reading comics” he said.
