CHAPTER 7 – THE UNEXPECTED EFFECTS OF TAU CETI STRENGTH

Darala and Jason walked slowly beneath a beautiful canopy of trees. The footpath grew wider as they reached the edge of the small town, and joggers began to pass them. A fit young brunette woman in high-waist satin track shorts trotted by, smiling at Jason.

“Hi, Jason,” she said, slowing down as she approached them. Darala watched the woman closely, noticing her dark, tone legs and arms. It seemed Earth people weren’t as hopelessly weak and unfit as she originally suspected they might be.

“Hi, Tina,” Jason said in return.

“I just locked up the store,” Tina said, “Maybe we can grab dinner when I’m through with my run. Just going to do a quick loop around town.”

Jason glanced at Darala and then at Tina and said, “Yes, sure, I’d love that. Oh, and, this is Darala.”

Darala smiled kindly at Tina and said, “Hello.”

Tina nodded in response and winked at Jason. “I’ll see you soon.” Quickly then, she trotted off, her shorts gleaming in the late afternoon sun.

“She seems very nice,” Darala said.

“Yes,” Jason said. “We’re very good friends. We run together and lift weights at the gym. And recently it seems we’re getting even closer than friends.”

Darala smiled and said, “Oh, Jason,I love training with the weights.I’ve been working so hard over the past ten years. Just look at this,” she said, and slowly, dramatically lifted her arm and flexed her bicep for him. Instantly the muscle was rock hard with an astounding defined peak beneath her shiny suit. It was beautiful, feminine and powerful at the same time.

Jason fell silent, his mouth slightly agape at the site of this. Darala squeezed the muscle even tighter and incredibly, it seemed to expand just the slightest bit more.

“Isn’t that incredible,” Darala remarked, still staring at it. She looked back at Jason, and then noticed a rather pronounced rise in the front of his dolfin shorts.

“What’s going on down there?” she asked. “Are you all right?”

Jason looked down and was quickly embarrassed. He turned away from her and closed his eyes, taking long deep breaths, attempting to calm himself. “Sorry, Darala, just give me a minute.”

He squatted down low to the ground, pulling his legs in close together. Gradually he was able to get himself under control. He stood up and turned back toward her and that conspicuous rise was mostly gone.

Darala suddenly realized what had happened. “Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t… I mean, I didn’t realize my physique would have that kind of effect on you.”

Jason said, “Look, Darala, maybe I should explain. You are a beautiful woman and in that suit you wear….” Jason lost his train of thought and then said, “I didn’t tell you this, but earlier, when you used your strength back on the road, the same thing happened to me. I was just doing my best to hide it.”

Darala finally understood. “I didn’t realize that my super strength would cause such a response. I’m sorry.”

Jason said, “You don’t have to be sorry, Darala. It’s natural. Besides, you really helped clean up that mess back on the road.”

“Well, Darala said, “I will try and be, um, mindful about that. Now that I know it’s a natural human response….”

Jason smiled knowlingly. “That’s the second time you’ve used the word ‘human.’ Darala just be honest with me… are you from another planet?”

Darala planted her hands on her hips and let out a long breath.

“If I tell you, do you promise not tell anotherhuman being?

Jason said, “Of course. But I think that sheriff’s deputy might suspect something. I mean, it’s not every day a woman like you lifts a five-ton truck and then proceeds to bend steel with her bare hands.”

Darala lowered her voice and said, “Okay, the truth is I’m from a very heavy planet called Tau Ceti Alpha. The gravity there is well over thirty times what it is here on earth. That, coupled with my very intense training time, probably gives me the strength of about fifty men here on earth. Maybe even more.”

Jason dropped his hands on his hips, astonished.

“Fifty men,” he said, contemplating that.

“Also,” she said, “I’m really, really fast! And I can jump over thirty feet in the air. It’s pretty awesome!”

Jason said, “Darala, you are practically a real superhero! We should get you a cape.”

Darala looked confused. “I don’t know what that is,” she said.

Jason shook his head in disbelief, then asked, “So, why are you here, Darala?”

Keeping her voice low, she said, “I’m looking for something—a piece of equipment from our world that landed here quite by accident. They sent me to recover it and bring it back to Tau Ceti.”

Just then, Darala’s bracelet communicator lit up and the ship’s computer voice said, “Darala, what’s your current status?”

Jason was startled at first and took a step back. “What is that?” he asked. “Whois that?”

The computer voice asked, “Darala, is that a human I’m speaking to?”

Darala said, “Yes. It’s my new friend, Jason.”

“Jason Prince,” he said, speaking awkwardly into her bracelet. “It’s nice to meet you. I’ve never talked to a computer before.”

There was a long, uneasy pause.

“Darala,” the ship’s computer finally said, “I hope you know what you’re doing.”

Darala winked at Jason and said, “Yes, I do. I’ll be in touch once I have… it.” And she turned off the communicator.

“You called me your new friend,” Jason said, his smile warm.

“Because that’s what you are, Jason Prince. And I hope you’ll call me a friend too.”

Jason nodded. “You are my very amazing friend, Darala Starr.”

Darala smiled so brightly her eyes lit up. It was the most beautiful thing Jason had ever seen.

“Now, my friend,” Jason said, “What can I do to help you with your mission?”

Darala said, “Well, you can…”

From a nearby standalone brick building an alarm bell began ringing loudly from the inside.

“What is that sound?” Darala asked.

Jason’s face darkened. “It’s an alarm,” he said. “Sounds like it’s coming from the antique shop over there. That’s Tina’s shop.”

It wasn’t but a few moments later that Tina ran back toward them, arriving at Jason’s side.

“Can you hear that?” she said. “Sounds like the alarm from the storage vault in the basement.”

Jason said, “Does that mean someone’s broken in?”

Confused, Darala asked “Is everything all right? Can I help?”

Tina swept Darala with her eyes for a moment, unsure of what to make of her.

“Look, I gotta get down there, I think someone’s trapped inside.”

A moment later Tina started running toward the building, reaching for a small set of keys tucked away securely in the elastic band of her shorts.

“Come on,” Jason said, and they both ran after Tina toward the small building and that loud, ringing alarm.
