Winter 2016 workshop is now live

Well it's being a long time coming but we have finally arrived at the latest story workshop and it's a to use a Scottish term a belter.  We started with three story prompts these where:-

  • The young woman stood silently with her fists clenched as she stared up at the massive steel door.
  • She instinctively groaned softly as she suddenly regained consciousness, feeling suddenly energized more than she had ever felt before.
  • The gunman smirked as he suddenly raised his weapon and fired it suddenly at the woman.

Most of the eleven stories picked one of them to run with and one though took a different line and went with all three, it will be interesting to see how you like that idea.  I'm not going to summarise the stories here just to say that it's going to be tough to choose between them.

In the matter of the prize when we launched this workshop we choose not to offer a cash prize or in fact any prize but Sarge395 has come in and offered a fantastic prize a of a Supergirl outfit (sans boots or cape), in either Small or Medium with free US shipping, here is a a picture of what the winner will get

No, you don't get the model just the outfit.  I would like to thank sarge395 for his kindness.

Lastly I've gone to a 4 up site design and have made the module containing the workshop entries yellow/orange, a real eye catcher if you ask me.

Voting will open in 48 hours and run until the closing date of the 10th January 2016 where the winner will be announced.

New Site - back, sort of

hi all,

The site is back in a way, there is still things to fix and things to add but the main parts of the site are good, the forum and library are there.

This is a quick message just to let you know is live, i'll explain more later on today.

Welcome to the new site

hi all,

Welcome to the new version of, it's been a long time in the making but it's finally here, i would first of all like to apologise to all the people who where waiting for the site to come back, i know from the emails and comments sent that people are big fans of the site and are enthused to be part of our little community.

So what has changed, well quite a lot, most of it with stuff you cant see with updated code that has been built for mobile devices and is much more modern.  The first thing you will notice is the new theme, this one has some of the best mobile options out there, the colours need some tweaking but that will happen over the next day or so.  Other changes have come about with the new theme, you will notice that the traditional me, myself and i has disappeared, it's actually gone to the top of the page under the "open panel" pull down link,  more stuff will go there as time does on.

You will notice that your avatars have gone, this is deeply annoying as the files are there but the software will not link to them, so you are going to have to reupload them, i've set the software to offer better quality and larger avatars so those avatars which are more detailed will keep a lot more of that detail, if people need help uploading them then please PM me the images and i'll add them via the backend.

Speaking of PM's you will notice that all the pm's are gone, they could not be transferred over so what i will do is set up a stripped down version of the old site with only pm's available, there will be no forum, no library or anything else just the pm's so that you can download them, i'll have that setup later on this week.

The galleries are not there but will be returned at the start of the new year, this is to allow me to sort them out as we never really got the libraries sorted, that will be my priority in the new year.

There will be a number of tweaks to happen to the site over the week, i'll set up a dedicated thread for people to report any site issues that have arisen from the relaunch.

Again i would like to apologize to members for the delay in getting the site transfered over, it should have taken a few hours tops not 2 days, this is due to the fact that when i tested the move i used migration scripts that would perfectly but when i came to use them for the main transfer all hell broke out, i ended up having to manually moving each database table by hand and check and verify that worked, i had to rebuild the menu and that took more time than i expected, there are still things that need tweaked but that will happen over the next day or so.

Some passwords are not working if this has happened to you, please email me (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) with your username and i'll reset your password

We have moved

hi all,

Welcome to the new host, and welcome to the new improved SWM.  It's taken a whole lot to get here but here we are.  I would like to thank all the people who have put their hands in to their pockets and put some money to making this site a better place.

So what has happened and what should I see

First of all you will see a new masthead (big graphic at the top) this item was a collaborative effort between Lfan and G7 and i think it's rather good.

Second you will notice the new theme, this theme has some nice features some that are in place and some that will come in the weeks ahead.

Third the image galleries are back, with the ability to upload images to your own gallery, but a large note of caution, i'm monitoring them very carefully, anyone who abuses the galleries by posting content that is either illegal or is hotlinking the images to their own website will be BANNED, there will be no warning, just a straight ban.  This is to protect the site and to prevent any additional costs to the site.

Forth you will notice that i've reintroduced the IM system that allows users to real time chat with each other there is also a chat room that can be used, we will retain access to the irc chat room but that will be used as a backup/emergency chat room rather than the main one.

Fifth the tag cloud is back, it's one of the most requested features that i've been asked for and it's back.

Sixth there are a number of little setting changes in the background that would make the site better

I would like to thank everyone's patience in the move it's been a real headache that it has taken so long for the DNS to be sorted but now it has full steam ahead.

I would also like to put my personal thanks to Lfan, G7, the donors and people who has offered me help and support, thanks guys.

We are Moving

hi all,

I'm pleased to make this announcement that with all the kind donations we are now able to move to the new server.  We have been hosted by Hostgator for over 4 years and it's time to move onwards and upwards, we would like to thank hostgator for the hosting that they have provided but all good things must come to an end.

I have been working on finding the best hosting for the site and this has taken more time than i expected but i have found an excellent host and that host is, we will be using their cloudVPS hosting package so it will mean a BIG jump in available resources.

When will it happen and what will happen.

OK, I've set the date of the Thursday 4th July will be the move day, the process will be as follows.

At 10am BST (5am EST, 11am CET) the site will go to read only.  what that will mean that you will be able to read any forum posts, read the stories but you wont be able to reply to any forum messages nor post any new material or comment on the stories.

During that time I back up the site, and download the back up, load it on my home server and make some important changes to the site, this process will take 2 hours.

I will then upload the site backup to the new server this will take 90 mins or less, once the backup is on the server I will restore the site to the new server.

While I’m doing this the address ( will have it's DNS records changed so that it will point to the new server and not the old one, this part will take anything from 1 min to 24 hours for people's web browser to point to the new server this part is outside of my control so if it takes longer i'm sorry there is nothing I can do.

Once the site is on the new server and is up and running I will then be happy.

There might be bugs, issues and even a server crash in the week after the site moves, if there is there will be a ton of info on the facebook group page to let you know what has happened.

Once again thank you to all the donator's who are making this possible.

first blog entry with the new software

Hi all,

I thought it might be a good idea to post something here as this is the new blog software.  For the geeks out there this new software is called K2, it's a very powerful bit of kit, eventually it will replace the software that powers the library and the image galleries as well, so it will reduce the workload on both the server and staff as there will be one place in the backend for all the content to be edited/organised.

With the recent outage of the site I have been working on ways to mitigate the server load to make the site more stable while keeping the functionality of the site intact.  The wordpress blog took quite a lot of the server load and since that has been removed the site has seen to be faster and more stable, which I think we can all agree is a good thing.  The image galleries are going to be disabled from Saturday 14th june, the galleries will be down for a week, this is to allow me to make changes to the set up to prevent hotlinking of content which was a major cause in the outage we suffered, other work that is going on in the background is the changing from Joomla 2.5 to joomla 3.2 which is going on, it was postponed when I had my house broken into but now that I have been able to replace all the missing kit I can restart the development of the site and it's upgrade of the base system that underlines the site.

Getting away from the tech stuff i would like to express my sincere thanks to all the writers and artists who have contributed new material to the site over the last few months, it shows to me that we don't need workshops to get writers to publish excellent new material.

One last thing that I would like to put out there. What do you think would make the site better, is there one thing or many things that you think would make the place better to visit?

Let me know in the comments below.
