From someone who used to spend time in Shenzhen with one of my jobs, this doesn't surprise me in the least. Where else would someone decide that one of the interesting side-effects of implants is that they fluoresce with the right kind of light. And unlike in many countries, were young and sexy is the opposite of techy, this merger of Sexy and Tech is so very, very Shenzhen. A place where you can get anything you can imagine made. 

I mean, where else would a pretty girl decide to make something like this. Give her time, and with the proper laser emitters and miniature fiber optics, and she might really come up with something. Then market variations for cosplayers to use worldwide. Very Chinese.

All women and the only people smiling are the ones not working.
It takes a lot of mundane people doing mundane jobs so one artist can be a free spirit.

She's quite a personality. I remember reading about her in the past -- I can't believe she's able to go out dressed like that, haha.

I used to have a small staff in a couple of Chinese companies reporting to me, including in a large factory in Shenzhen. So I was there often. And that looks like a pretty decent low-volume factory. 

As far as being mostly female workers, there is a reason for that. During the One Child period, which is still not completely relaxed, parents would often fail to register a first-born daughter, Given they only could have one child legally, they wanted a son to carry on the family name and to inherit their property. So daughters, who were unregistered and with poor prospects would migrate to the cities in vast numbers where they were hired by tech firms such as the one I worked for (a US company doing business in China). 

The boys would stay home to work the farm and raise pigs or whatever. 

The unexpected thing was that after the women had worked for a number of years in places like Shenzhen, living in dorms and so forth, they would accumulate a significant amount of money (by rural Chinese standards), given it cost them nothing to live in the dorms. Pay was low, but when it's saved, it adds up. They also became tech-savvy and cosmopolitan in many ways. 

Many would eventually return to their villages and buy (or start) businesses or whatever. These undocumented girls were suddenly the ones in their villages with money and influence, far more than the sons who had been registered under One Child and stayed home.

This is one of the things that happens when governments try to socially control people too much. People find ways to work around the system.

That was in the 90's and early 2000's. In Shenzhen, the ratio of female to male was wildly disproportionate, and the girls who came to work were mostly young and often very attractive. Single guys didn't go on a date with one girl, but with three. But I digress. 

China is going to be the only global superpower down the road. Best get used to it.

What I like is that she's so unapologetically geeky to the extreme, and it works for her. That would be terribly uncool for girls in North America or Europe, or even Hong Kong next door or down in Singapore, but it works very well in Shenzhen. Geek heaven. 

As an old geek who grew up unsociably nerdy, I can appreciate it. Maybe I was born on the wrong continent, although working in the 80's and 90's in the US tech business was pretty cool. But we didn't have girl geeks like this back then. To my regrets.

If not Chinese, then I'd peg her as a confident, outgoing Singaporean ethnic Chinese, but her English almost sounds more American than Singaporean.  But maybe she talks a lot with Americans. Some people gain, lose or change accents unconsciously. But she's definitely got that Shenzhen geeky twist. But unlikely to find a Singaporean working as a Tech in Shenzhen 

But then, it's been about 12 years since I lived in that neighborhood, so my more nuanced perceptions of accent and origin could way off now.

I have a friend who has a 3D printer and he makes cool props and models from sci fi movies with it.

She's a real 21st century girl. 

She loves her fantasies, has modified her body to support said fantasies, is good with hardware, is comfortable working with code, loves to make cool stuff and enjoys being in front of the camera. A future I like, especially if you extend this forward another generation or two. A blend of SF, fantasy and good old lab work. 

As an old geek and an electronics engineer (retired), this is a cool spin on working in the lab. In essence, little has changed from my day. The hardware is cooler, and it's way easier to code these days with the modern languages, but the basic flavor and fun of working in the lab is unchanged. 

Well, except that we didn't have any female Techs in the lab back then. We couldn't imagine someone looking like this working in the lab. Hand it to the Chinese to break on through to the other side (Doors). 

First time I went to a business meeting in Beijing (1990's), to a meeting of a bunch of engineers from my company and our Chinese customer, I was amazed that half the Chinese engineers were female. Some of the toughest questions and most demanding requests came from the women. Opened my eyes, it did. They were tough and they were smart. And the women weren't all secretaries and Admins like back home. 

I firmly believe that gender has nothing at all to do with technical competence if you remove the social and cultural barriers to female participation in STEM fields. Or in this young lady's case, making it work for you. 

At the time, I assumed that was the influence of Mao Zedong, who ensured that women and men had equal opportunities thanks to his obliterating the historical social and cultural order of China. Does the end justify the means? We could rathole on that one all day. So lets not. But something very interesting continues to happen in China.
