I don't know much but I do know what I like and I like. I like that song a lot! Brantley I stayed up past my bed time searching the internet for more on Jon Brion. Ended up buying the Magnolia cd. After searching some more to day I'll probably buy some more music by him. Thank you for pointing me towards him.

The odd thing is, he's known mainly for rock and pop; I don't think he's done any other orchestral music, and yet that one score is the work of a master of the classical idiom. Here he is working on one section:

There are a couple of things he does that I don't know that proper names for, because I'm not musically trained, and yet impress very much. One is the layering of a slow melody over a fast rhythm -- sort of like the breath of life over the heartbeat. The other is repetition with only small variations, and yet never becoming monotonous. That's hard to pull off; Bruckner did it in his symphonies:

And here's Paul Hindemith doing the same trick in a piece my wife and I heard for the first time at a concert a week ago:

Not the same thing that Ravel did in Bolero, and nothing in common with Bruckner and Brion except the method.

Wow, yeah I like a lot of Badalamenti's work Some more than others, over all I'm really enjoying digging through your list. It's going to take me some time to look/listen through it all but I wont complain. Right off the bat I pick “I Hold No Grudge” as a freeking awesome! So far what I really find incredible is the shear variety of music types. I really like old Blues and Jazz a lot too. I've also been listing to a lot of old blues lately.

I'll second the Pomplamoose music. Very cool arrangements of covers and vibey originals. Heard they've got a national commercial now.
