SGI Workshop 1.13: UPDATED 12/18/09

04 Nov 2009 14:16 #17234 by lfan
OK, folks...its that time again! Inpired by another one of our contributors -- GeekSeven -- we've come up with a fun sort of workshop based loosely on a series of his stories, Alternate Histories.

Topic/Assignment: "Write an ubergirl tale whereby the heroine becomes a nation's poster girl or iconic national hero"

If you've read G7's works, this is similar to Amber Waves or Skylark. It doesn't HAVE to be based in WWII (like his universe) but that is ok if it is (mine will be).

All we ask is that you "register" your country here, and while dupes are not prohibited, I'd like to not get 7 U.S. ubergirls (but would be happy to get 7 entries).

Let's set the deadline for Jan 1st and we'll re-evaluate. I'll get the ball rolling with my country selection:

1. Finland - lfan

Who else is in?

OK, I'll get the ball-rolling and throw my hat in the ring by selecting #5, Petty Tyrant as my topic. Others please chime in!!

I'll jump in. And I'll take Great Britain.

GeekSeven, I have an Idea for the British heroine for your 'Liberty Belle/Amber Waves' setting. Mind if I drop her in there?

I started writing a story along those lines not too long ago. I'll take England in 1485 if that's OK.

talisan, I have no problem with that. However, my forthcoming story "Skylark" does feature a British heroine in that universe, so you might want to read that first, just in case we are stepping on each other's toes. She's fairly contained to a narrow strip of history at the moment, so there shouldn't be any issues.

I will definitely contribute something. I may hang back and make my selection of country when more people have grabbed theirs.

Hmmm. Would an Atalanta story fit the theme?

I think that she will (maybe with some retooling shifting from the myth to actual history), incase you want to participate I'll step away from Greece and take the XIII century Japan.

I'll take Canada if that's okay.

Sounds like a cool idea for a Workshop. I'd like to take a shot at writing about a Cuban Superwoman.

Whatever time I can spare for writing over the next couple of weeks will be devoted to the next chapter of "The Supergirl of Smallville." The first draft is finished, but it needs a fair amount of tinkering.

But after that -- yeah, I've been meaning to write a new Atalanta story (has it really been four years since I posted the last one?) ... and the workshop theme kinda-sorta fits what I had in mind ... so I'm in. (But I'm counting on the customary extension!)

The Atalanta stories take place on the Greek mainland, in a vaguely-defined period a century or two before the Greeks rose to power in the Mediterranean -- say, 700 BCE or thereabouts.

Recap List:

Brad -- Canada
Lfan -- Finland
Argo -- Ancient Greece
Anon -- 13th Century Japan
G7 -- Albania
Berkhart - Cuba
Taliesan -- UK

Seven takers so far....can I hear more? Marknew? DKC? Ace? How bout some of the older guard -- UG? YAGS? Yosh? Angels? Plenty of countries left -- Italy, China, RUSSIA <nudges Martin>.....

And I also lost track of the dates....let's say Feb 1st as the deadline. December is pretty much a lost cause in terms of "extra writing time" for most...

How long are these stories typically? I always have written in script format. I've been checking out the storybank but am still getting a feel for the format.

It's pretty much a short story? Twist - build- twist is a workable structure for a movie short. What are ya'll hanging your hat on structurewise, or is it kind of free flowing?

Another noob question: Ya'll want feedback/critiques? Do you email them privately to the author or should it be public here at the forum? Or maybe just read and enjoy? I just read The Amulet.

I don't think that I will join in on the Workshop, but since DKC cleared off his desktop, I feel compelled to do the same. All the activity has fired me up to get off my ass and get back to writing. I look at it as output is output, and that is the main thing.

Feedback is always apreciated. You can do either. Making it public in a forum does encourage a bit more discussion about the storeis, IMO; draws out some of the shy admirers.

You left me off the list there lfan. I'm so hurt :D .

My 15th Century UK story is coming along. Slowly, but it is being written. It should certainly be ready before February (or at least I hope so).

I look forward to seeing what everyone else comes up with. I love history and I love Superwomen. Put them together and there's heaven.
