SWM Adverts
Due to the lack of donations to the site Lfan and I are implementing Adsense adverts on to the site, we are going to have them on the front page and on the forums, we will keep adverts out of stories but if needs be that can change.

I'll continue to donate a few bucks from time to time instead.

This is a bloody good idea.

We are needing around $360 per year to run this site, there are around 1000 hits to the site per day, if only 1/3 of those people gave only $1 once per year we would have enough to cover the costs of this site, we raised over the last 6 months $100 which lfan has had to put into his pocket the remaining amount to cover the costs for the billing period (6 months) both lfan and I are angry that we need to get advertising to pay the hosting.
There is no cost way at this time to make the site ad-free for those who pay for a subscription, there is a way that costs $100 to buy and will take time to implement on the site, time that I do not have.
If you run an ad-blocker on the site you will deprive the site of money, so, I would ask for those who are running one to whitelist the site. I can provide instructions if needs require it.

Personally I was donating every month until this site wholly endorsed the "leaked" copy of the Supergirl pilot.
Thus advocating torrent and other sites that steal content from creators.

I'm all for the adds if it keeps the site up!
I try to remember to donate every few months. I need to set reminders. I'm not sure if having the real would help. Need $x/year. Year to date: $y. (I would hope everyone would realize that getting that # higher than the 'need' is ok too.)
And I guess everyone makes their own values judgements. I viewed the "leaked" copy as just that, quoted leaked. That is it was done on purpose by the copyright holders as advertising. I didn't view downloading it as "stealing content from creators". It's not unusual for shows to release their first episode for free from various sites even when the other episodes are not.
I did however made sure I legally watched it when it came out. As long as I did that, anything I did wasn't "stealing", by any definition they didn't loose any money from me. Now, abusing a copyright (etc), yes, absolutely. I viewed content that I didn't have a legal right for at the time ... but no loss of money was involved.
Nor did I see SWM as advocating stealing from creators (in this specific case or in general). IIRC, SWM wouldn't even host a link to the torrent or allow it to be posted -- just allowed us to talk about it if we'd done so ourselves. In fact, in balance this has been one of the few sites that seems very creator friendly. We pimp movies that fit our niche from small publishers, and encourage people to buy them. There are regular posts about kick starters (etc), new comics, and other media which fit the SWM niche.
There are even a few creators who stop by here -- I would think that it's partially because doing so is good for their sales. (maybe some of them could comment.)

Two other complementary things you could try to raise funds:
1. having a large "please donate now" banner for a part of the year like Wikipedia does - it seems to work for them so it may work to some extent for SWM.
2. going directly to creators (of genre videos and other content) and offering them the opportunity to advertise. You could possibly offer them the opportunity to go on a feed on the home page next to SuperGirl Threads, Forum Latest and Latest Stories. They could pay an amount per video to add to the feed, and links on the feed could go straight to the videos on their websites.

Would you be open to ads from small content providers or self-published authors (cough). If so, get in touch and we can talk price and specs.

Within 24 hours things were different.
Everytime Supergirl popped up on legitimate sites like You Tube the WB had it taken down.
Members here including the admins all watched it on illegal sites.
To get back to the topic at hand:
Post advertising if you have to.

Many content providers basically advertise here for free by posting links to videos, comics, etc.
Would posts like those now be verbotten in favor of a paid advertising slot?

I think that the key advantage of a paying ad would that it would run all the time, without any need to check periodically or to keep the relevant thread up on the front page by constantly bumping it. So, in my opinion, if a producer has the time, but not the money, he can always opt to use the forum for posting links and such. Otherwise, one that has the money, but not the time, can opt for having a banner. The two options are both valid.

I don't think I'll even be able to do that. I still have a conscience.

I'm going to spend the weekend going through it and I'll let members know what's going on on Monday.
Remember that you can still donate via the donate feature on the front page as I said, $1 from each user would give us enough money to cover all our costs.

I am going to start donating again.
I do not condone or promote pirate sites.
And neither should SWM

Please do not donate....if you feel SWM's moral compass is out of whack, you are free to do what you do, including not contributing and/or visiting the site. Do what you have to do.
After the third, fourth, or eighth time, your position is perfectly clear -- you don't condone piracy. Your previous accusation that SWM endorses it is laughable. Rather, I have publicly posted that people posting links will be banned. It's also -- if I'm not mistaken -- in the FAQ. When we see links to pirated material on the site, we take them down and warn the poster. This has been the policy for years and was happening well before the Supergirl pilot. You can also ask several content creators as well (JonX, TKS, Random, WCG, even DC and Marvel Comics) of me reporting to them when I DO see their stuff being pirated. Hell, I have even told Bill Black and Cult Retro when I see their stuff being pirated. Do I always publicly post this? No. Sometimes things that are not said are as relevant as things that are said.
The Supergirl pilot discussion included several people that had seen the pilot -- whether legally or illegally -- and to ignore that and ban any discussion is just plain dumb. If you feel this is encouraging piracy on our part, let me again say:
SWM does not endorse or condone piracy. Please check the FAQ for more details.
This thread has overstayed its welcome and, while I really want to lock it, I'm gonna just refrain from discussing this any more.....
